4 large eggs, separated
1 3/4 cups powdered sugar, sifted
1 pinch salt
2 cups flour, all purpose
1/4 teaspoon baking powder
2 teaspoons anise seed, ground

Steps:

  • Grease and flour baking sheets.
  • Beat egg yolks, powdered sugar and salt in a large bowl until pale and creamy.
  • Beat egg whites until very stiff; fold into egg yolk mixture.
  • Siftflour, baking powder and aniseed onto egg mixture; fold in quickly but thoroughly.
  • Fill a pastry bag fitted with a plain nozzle with cookie mixture.
  • Pipe in small rounds onto prepared baking sheets.
  • Let stand overnight to dry out.
  • Preheat oven to 325°F.
  • Bake cookies 20 minutes.
  • Cool on rack.

NANA'S ANISE CUTOUT COOKIES

These cookies have been made in my family for 4 generations now and I must say that they are a family favorite above all others. If you love the flavor of anise I think you will surely Love these cookies.

Number Of Ingredients 9

1 1/3 c butter, room temperature
1 1/2 c sugar
1 1/4 tsp vanilla extract
1 1/4 tsp anise extract
2 eggs
6-8 tsp milk
4 c all-purpose flour
3 tsp baking powder
1/2 tsp salt

Steps:

  • 1. Thoroughly cream butter,sugar vanilla and anise. Add eggs; beat til light and fluffy
  • 2. Stir in milk
  • 3. Gradually add dry ingredients(I use my kitchen aid stand mixer) til blended. Divide dough in half and chill several hours
  • 4. When ready to bake; On lightly floured surface, roll to 1/4 in thickness. Cut into your favorite shapes. Bake on greased cookie sheet spaced 1 in. apart for 9-11 minutes.(depending on how thick or thin you roll them) @ 375 degrees. Cool slightly, remove from pan to rack to decorate. Frost as you wish..............Yields 3-4 dozen depending on thickness and size of cutter
  • 5. Frost with your favorite Buttercream frosting Hint: I add anise to my frosting to compliment the flavor in the cookie...Nana always did. Enjoy!

1/2 c shortening
1 c sugar
2 eggs
1/2 c sour creme
1 t vanilla
3 c flour
1/4 t salt
1/2 t baking soda
1 1/2 t baking powder
sprinkles and/or colored icing to decorate

Steps:

  • 1. Beat sugar and shortening together in a large bowl with electric mixer
  • 2. Add in eggs, vanilla and sour creme and beat together
  • 3. In a seperate medium size bowl whisk flour, baking powder, baking soda and salt together.
  • 4. Add flour mix to the wet mix and beat on low speed until just blended
  • 5. Form dough into balls slightly under an inch round. Roll in colored sugar or sprinkles and put balls on ungreased cookies sheet
  • 6. Bake in a 350 degree preheated oven for 9 to 10 minutes, just until they are set. (they may look like they are not dont to you but thats ok)
  • 7. Leave cookies on the cookie sheets for another 10 minutes outside of oven (this will allow them to finish baking)
  • 8. Remove from cookie sheets and drizzle with icing if desired
