Time 1h15m

Number Of Ingredients 11

4 cups all-purpose flour (divided )
1 1/2 cups butter (divided)
1/3 cup granulated sugar
1/2 tsp vanilla extract
1 large egg
5 apples
1 1/3 cup applesauce (sweet or unsweetened)
1 tsp lemon zest (freshly grated)
1 tbsp lemon juice
1/2 tsp cinnamon
1/2 cup granulated or brown sugar

Steps:

  • Lightly grease a 9x13-inch baking pan and preheat your oven to 350F (180C).
  • In the bowl of a stand mixer fitted with the paddle attachment, add 3/4 cup (1.5 sticks) butter, 1/3 cup sugar, vanilla extract, 2 cups all-purpose flour and egg. Beat until everything is incorporated. Spread the dough onto the baking sheet. Put the baking sheet in the fridge while you make the apple and crumble layer.
  • Leave the remaining 3/4 cup (1.5 sticks) butter on the kitchen counter to get to room temperature.
  • Peel and core the apples and chop them into small chunks. Mix the apple chunks with the lemon zest, lemon juice, cinnamon and apple sauce. Set aside.
  • For the crumb topping: In the bowl of a stand mixer fitted with the paddle attachment mix the remaining soft 3/4 cup (1.5 sticks) butter with 2 cups of flour and 1/2 cup sugar (see Note 4). The mixture will be crumbly.
  • To assemble the cake, spread the apple mixture onto the dough layer. Then use your fingers to crumble the crumbs on top. Press some crumbs together to form bigger crumbs, you don't want the crumbs to be too fine.

  • Let the cake cool off completely. It will be a little bit soft while hot.
  • Serve with whipped cream or vanilla ice cream!

Oma's Apfelkuchen (Grandma's Apple Cake) image

My husband's German family calls this Oma's apfelkuchen, which translates to "Grandma's apple cake." They've been sharing the recipe for more than 150 years. I use Granny Smith apples, but any variety works. -Amy Kirchen, Loveland, Ohio

For this apple cake you need to cut the apples like a fan not only for looks - this little trick makes the cake especially moist. I like to use tart apples. You will need between 5 and 7 apples, depending on their size.

SUPER MOIST FRESH APPLE CAKE

Super Moist Fresh Apple Cake image

This is one of those cakes that, well, the longer it sets, the better it gets. Oh, don't get me wrong, it is just as delicious warm and fresh out of the oven. The added bonus to this lovely cake is that instead of drying out, it gets more moist as the days pass on, if it lasts that long...

Time 1h5m

Yield 1 Cake

Number Of Ingredients 12

3 eggs
1 1/2 cups oil
2 cups sugar
3 cups flour, sifted
1 teaspoon salt
1 teaspoon baking soda
1 cup pecans or 1 cup walnuts, chopped
2 teaspoons vanilla
4 Granny Smith apples, about 3 1/2 apples (1 shredded, the others chopped fine)
1 cup light brown sugar
1/2 cup butter
1/2 cup milk

Steps:

  • Cream together the eggs, oil and sugar.
  • In a separate bowl, sift the flour, salt and baking soda.
  • Combine all.
  • Now add your nuts, vanilla and apples.
  • Note~this batter is VERY stiff, don't worry, it's suppose to be that way. When the apples cook they add plenty of moisture to the cake to make it moist. Plus, your going to add more moisture when your glaze soaks inches.
  • Pour into a greased and floured 9 X 13 cake pan. Bake at 350 for 45 minutes or until a toothpick comes out clean from the center of the cake.
  • In a sauce pan, combine your glaze ingredients and boil for a few minutes. Set aside.
  • When cake is done, puncture the top of cake with a fork, quite a bit. Pour on your glaze.
