MOCK WHIPPED CREAM ICING - WITH VARIATION

Steps:
- Shake milk, flour and salt together in a jar or shaker covered tightly. Heat until thick, stirring constantly, then cool.
- Beat shortening with electric beater for 3 minutes. Add sugar and beat 3 minutes more. Add milk mixture and vanilla; beat again 2 or 3 minutes.
- Spread on cake. Will cover filling and outside of layer cake.
- Chocolate Icing: Add 1 square chocolate and an additional 1/4 cup confectioners sugar.

OLD FASHIONED WHIPPED CREAM FROSTING
This recipe is one handed down from many generations in my family. We use it on any flavored cake or torte.

Steps:
- 1. In a bowl beat Crisco/shortening, butter, sugar, and vanilla until sugar is dissolved. Cover, and set aside on counter.
- 2. Meanwhile, make the thickener: In a pan, stir flour into milk then put over low heat.
- 3. Cook and stir until a slow boil and is thick.
- 4. Remove from stove top and let cool for 20 to 30 minutes. (until cooled)
- 5. Remove the top skin that forms and discard.
- 6. Add the thickening past to the butter/crisco/sugar mixture a little at a time while beating with mixer.
- 7. Beat until well mixed and smooth and fluffy.
