MAPLE SYRUP DUMPLINGS

Maple Syrup Dumplings image

One of my favorite dessert made with maple syrup. Each time we go to my cousin's sugar shack, his wife makes us maple syrup dumplings. So yummy. This recipe is from Ricardo & Friends.

Categories     Dessert

Time 30m

Yield 6 serving(s)

Number Of Ingredients 9

2 cups unbleached all-purpose flour
1/4 cup sugar
2 teaspoons baking powder
1/4 teaspoon salt
1/4 cup unsalted butter, softened
1 cup milk
1/2 teaspoon vanilla extract
1 cup water
1 (540 ml) can maple syrup

Steps:

  • In a bowl, combine the flour, sugar, baking powder and salt. Work the butter into the dry ingredients with your fingers or a fork until the mixture resembles coarse sand. Add the milk and vanilla, stirring with a wooden spoon until the dough is smooth.
  • Place the syrup and water in a large saucepan and bring to a boil. Using two spoons or a moistened ice cream scoop, shape the dough into about 12 balls; use about 30 ml (2 tablespoons) for each ball. Drop the balls one by one into the boiling syrup mixture.
  • Cover, reduce the heat and simmer for about 15 minutes. Serve with the hot syrup and a scoop of vanilla ice cream.
  • Note: The butter coats the flour, inhibiting gluten formation and giving the dumplings a crumbly texture. A similar effect happens with scones.

MAPLE SYRUP BREAKFAST DUMPLINGS

Maple Syrup Breakfast Dumplings image

As someone who loves dumplings, I'm always brainstorming crazy dumpling ideas. After eating a sausage and egg sandwich one morning for breakfast, the idea of breakfast dumplings was born! Enjoy the dumplings by themselves or dip them in maple syrup!

Provided by jmido8

Categories     Main Dish Recipes     Dumpling Recipes

Time 50m

Yield 50

Number Of Ingredients 8

1 pound bulk regular pork sausage (such as Jimmy Dean®)
6 eggs
1 teaspoon salt
½ teaspoon ground black pepper
cooking spray
½ cup bacon bits
½ cup maple syrup
50 potsticker wrappers

Steps:

  • Heat a large skillet over medium-high heat. Cook and stir sausage in the hot skillet until browned and crumbly, 5 to 7 minutes. Transfer sausage to a bowl lined with paper towels to drain some of the grease.
  • Beat eggs, salt, and pepper together in a small bowl.
  • Spray another large skillet with cooking spray; warm over medium-high heat. Pour eggs into the skillet; cook and stir until eggs are set, about 5 minutes.
  • Mix sausage, scrambled eggs, and bacon bits together in a large bowl, crumbling any large chunks. Mix in maple syrup.
  • Pour water into a small bowl. Wet edges of the dumpling wrappers using your fingers dipped in the water. Place about 1 teaspoon filling into the middle of each wrapper; fold in 1/2 to make dumpling shapes. Press edges to seal and pinch so they won't open while cooking.
  • Place a steamer insert into a saucepan and fill with water to just below the bottom of the steamer. Bring water to a boil. Add dumplings, cover, and steam until tender, 5 to 7 minutes.

GRANDPA'S MAPLE DUMPLINGS (GRANDPèRES)

Grandpa's Maple Dumplings (Grandpères) image

How to make Grandpa's Maple Dumplings (Grandpères)

Provided by @MakeItYours

Number Of Ingredients 13

Serves 4
Hot, sweet, syrupy Grandpères served with two scoops of cold vanilla ice cream. Genius. And we have generations of Canadians to thank for keeping this age-old recipe alive. You can eat this for breakfast or dessert. Or a midnight snack.
Ingredients:
For the dumplings:
2 - 2 1/4 cups flour
1 Tbsp baking powder
1/2 tsp cinnamon
pinch of salt
3 Tbsp butter
3/4 cup whole milk
For the cooking liquid:
2 cups maple syrup
1 1/2 cups water

Steps:

  • Method:
  • In a large bowl, mix together flour...
  • ... start with two cups and add more if you need to.
  • Stir in the baking powder...
  • A scoop of cinnamon (or Sin as my mom likes to call it)
  • Whisk together with a pinch of salt. Can you see Keith?
  • Now add some buttery goodness. Cut it into the flour with a pastry cutter. Stop when the butter is pea-sized.
  • Next comes the milk.
  • Mix it together until it forms a loose mass, like wet bread dough.
  • Add water to a pot... make it a wide one. You'll see why in a few pictures.
  • Don't forget the maple syrup. Use the best quality you can afford. No imitation syrup, please... at least for our Canadian Global Table.
  • Bring to a simmer. I wish this was a hot tub. Yum.
  • Drop in the dough..
  • one at a time...
  • Whoops. Getting crowded in here.
  • This definitely isn't going to work. Time to pour molten syrup and dough into a wider pot.
  • Presto... chango! Ahhh... much better.
  • Simmer gently for about 20 minutes.
  • You can eat these plain, swimming in the cooking liquid.
  • Yum!
  • Or with a scoop of vanilla ice cream
  • Or two!
  • You better eat quickly though... before it melts away!

MAPLE DUMPLINGS (GRANDPèRES)

Maple Dumplings (Grandpères) image

Each spring we look forward to maple dumplings, a decadent and boldly delicious maple-season treat.

Provided by @MakeItYours

Number Of Ingredients 12

2 ½ cups water
1 ½ cups maple syrup
1 tablespoon rum (optional, but recommended)
½ teaspoon table salt or fine sea salt
1 cup all-purpose flour
1 cup whole wheat flour
2 teaspoons baking powder
1 teaspoon baking soda
1 teaspoon table salt
4 ½ tablespoons chilled unsalted butter, cut into small cubes
1 cup buttermilk
Chopped toasted pecans and whipped cream, for garnish

Steps:

  • Instructions In a 4- or 5-quart Dutch oven, bring water, syrup, rum, and salt to a low boil over medium heat. Meanwhile, make the dough.
  • Instructions Put flours, baking powder, baking soda, and salt into the bowl of a food processor, and pulse them. Sprinkle in butter cubes and pulse 6 to 8 more times, or until the mixture resembles coarse meal. Transfer mixture to a medium bowl and stir in buttermilk until evenly combined. With a spoon, scoop up a walnut-size bit of dough. Drop it into the syrup, then repeat until the pot is two-thirds full (the dumplings expand). Cover the pot, reduce heat to low, and let the dumplings simmer until fluffy and cooked through, about 10 minutes. Repeat with remaining dough. If the syrup gets too thick, add a bit of water to thin it out. Serve dumplings warm, topped with whipped cream and toasted pecans.
