These homemade au gratin potatoes are always welcome at our dinner table, and they're so simple to make. A perfect complement to ham, this homey potato gratin also goes well with pork, chicken and other entrees. -Cris O'Brien, Virginia Beach, Virginia

3 tablespoons butter
3 tablespoons all-purpose flour
1-1/2 teaspoons salt
1/8 teaspoon pepper
2 cups 2% milk
1 cup shredded cheddar cheese
5 cups thinly sliced peeled potatoes (about 6 medium)
1/2 cup chopped onion
Additional pepper, optional

Steps:

  • Preheat oven to 350°. In a large saucepan, melt butter over low heat. Stir in flour, salt and pepper until smooth. Gradually add milk. Bring to a boil; cook and stir 2 minutes or until thickened. Remove from heat; stir in cheese until melted. Add potatoes and onion., Transfer to a greased 2-qt. baking dish. Cover and bake 1 hour. Uncover; bake 30-40 minutes or until the potatoes are tender. If desired, top with additional pepper.

1 (5 ounce) box Betty Crocker au gratin potatoes
2 cups boiling water
1 cup half-and-half
2 tablespoons butter
6 slices bacon, cooked, crumbled
1 cup shredded cheddar cheese
1/4 cup green onion, sliced
1/4 teaspoon black pepper
1/2 cup breadcrumbs (I use panko)
2 tablespoons butter, melted
1 tablespoon fresh parsley, chopped

Steps:

  • Heat oven to 375°F In 2-quart casserole, mix potatoes, sauce mix, boiling water, half-and-half and butter. Stir in remaining potato ingredients.Bake uncovered 35 minutes or until liquid is reduced.
  • In the meantime, combine bread crumbs and butter in a small bowl; sprinkle mixture over potatoes. Bake 8 minutes longer or until topping is golden.
  • Sprinkle with parsley to garnish.
  • ***Variation: Instead of a breadcrumb topping in step 2, sprinkle some reserved bacon, cheddar and green onions on top!

1/4 tsp coarse ground black pepper
1/2 cup Progresso™ plain bread crumbs
2 tablespoons butter, melted
1 tablespoon chopped fresh parsley

Steps:

  • Heat oven to 400°F.
  • In 2-quart casserole, mix Potatoes, Sauce Mix, boiling water, half-and-half and butter. Stir in remaining potato ingredients. Bake uncovered 35 minutes.

1/2 pound lean ground beef
1/2 teaspoon garlic powder
1 box (4.7 oz) Betty Crocker™ au gratin potatoes
2 1/4 cups hot water
2/3 cup milk
1 can (4 ounces) mushroom pieces and stems, drained
1/3 cup sour cream

Steps:

  • Cook beef and garlic powder in 10-inch skillet over medium heat, stirring occasionally, until beef is brown; drain. Stir in Potatoes, Sauce Mix, hot water and milk.
  • Heat to boiling, stirring occasionally; reduce heat. Cover and simmer about 25 minutes, stirring occasionally, until potatoes are tender.
