Number Of Ingredients 9

1 cup butter, softened
1 cup granulated sugar
1 egg yolk
2 cups sifted flour
1/2 teaspoon cinnamon
1 egg white
1 teaspoon water
8 ounces slivered almonds
3 Tbs. granulated sugar (you can use colored decorating sugar for Christmas, if desired)

Steps:

  • Pre-heat oven to 325. Beat together butter, sugar and egg yolk until light and fluffy. Stir in flour and cinnamon. Press dough into the bottom of two 9x13" pan that you have lined with parchament paper. Beat egg white and water in a small bowl until frothy. Spread over dough. Sprinkle the almonds evenly over the top. Sprinkle the sugar evenly over the almonds. Bake for 15 to 20 minutes or until golden brown. Remove from oven and slice into rectangles while hot.

How to make Jan Hagels cookies

Number Of Ingredients 8

1 cup butter softened
1 cup sugar
1 egg, separated
2 cups all-purpose flour
1/2 teaspoon cinnamon
1 Tablespoon water
1/2 cup finely chopped walnuts (sliced almonds can also be used)
Crystallized sugar (kandij) (optional)

Steps:

  • Heat oven to 350º F. Lightly grease a 15 1/2″ by 10 1/2″ by 1″ pan. Mix butter, sugar and egg yolk. Stir in flour and cinnamon. Pat into pan. Place plastic wrap or wax paper over the dough and use a small rolling pin to roll out dough evenly in pan. Beat egg white and water til frothy, brush over dough, sprinkle with nuts and crystallized sugar. Bake 20-25 minutes, until very lightly browned. Cut immediately into finger like strips. Allow to cool and crisp up.
