Time 40m

Number Of Ingredients 11

Extra virgin olive oil, for frying
1 1/2 pounds potatoes, quartered and sliced
Kosher salt, to taste
1 medium onion, sliced
1 green bell pepper, cut into strips
1 red bell pepper, cut into strips
1 teaspoon Italian seasoning
Freshly ground black pepper, to taste
6 all-beef hot dogs
6 large rolls, or 2 round muffuletta or Italian loaves
3 to 4 tablespoons spicy brown mustard

Steps:

  • Gather the ingredients.
  • Prepare a medium (350°F to 375°F) gas or charcoal outdoor grill fire, or indoor grill pan . Lightly oil the grill. Grill the hot dogs, turning frequently until charred on all sides, 5 to 7 minutes. Remove the hot dogs to a platter and keep warm.
  • Add about 1/2 inch of oil to a large deep, heavy-duty skillet. Heat to 350 F over medium-high heat. Add the potatoes in batches, if necessary, and fry, undisturbed, until browned on the bottom, 2 to 3 minutes. Turn and continue to cook until golden brown and tender, 2 to 3 minutes longer.
  • Drain on paper towels, then sprinkle lightly with salt.
  • Remove all but 2 tablespoons of the frying oil from the skillet. Add the onions, peppers, and Italian seasoning. Cook, stirring frequently, until softened, 5 to 7 minutes.
  • Return the potatoes to the pan. Adjust the seasoning with salt and pepper.
  • Spread some of the mustard on the bread, then place a hot dog on each. Top with the potatoes, onions, and peppers. Finish with extra mustard, if desired. Serve immediately.

NEWARK STYLE ITALIAN HOTDOGS

Newark Style Italian Hotdogs image

My inlaws were from Newark, NJ and this is a dish that my Mother-in-Law would make and something that you can get in a greasy spoon all over New Jersey. I have shared it at a covered dish at work as part of diversity day here in Houston, TX and nobody ever heard of it before but everyone loved it! Its an interesting regional way...

  • 5. Hubby and I have different "favorite" hot dogs. I was raised on Ball Park all Beef and he was raised on Nathans or Hebrew national Kosher Franks. When we make this dish we buy 2 packages of hotdogs, throw some of mine in and some of his in and freeze the leftover ones. Yes, we really do this. We really do! It has kept the peace for 26 years! LOL

This is the best way I know to eat hot dogs! There's not much else to say about Italian Hot Dogs, except that my whole family loves them!

Number Of Ingredients 9

1 pkg hot dogs (use your favorite kind)
6 medium potatoes, peeled and sliced
1 large onion, sliced
2-3 red, yellow or green peppers, sliced (or a combination of all three)
1/2 tsp granulated garlic or 2 cloves fresh, minced
1/2-3/4 c tomato sauce (depends how "wet" you like it)
1/4 tsp basil
1/8 tsp oregano (optional)
6 italian rolls (heat them in the oven for a crisp crust)

Steps:

  • 1. Fry potato slices in olive oil until just starting to soften; add sliced peppers and onions. Cook until all are tender. Place in a bowl and set aside.
  • 2. Slice the hot dogs into 1" circles, place in the same pan and let cook until heated through and a little browned; this takes almost no time at all. Then, pour the potatoes, peppers and onions back into the pan; stir gently to combine.
  • 3. Stir in tomato sauce, and seasonings; simmer until heated through.
  • 4. Serve on warm Italian rolls!
