Fast, flavourful food doesn't mean cans, sauces, packets and powders. It is possible to make healthy fast food, but it does require time and effort - well more time and more effort than using a can opener.

Time 45m

Yield 5-6 Sandwiches, 5-6 serving(s)

Number Of Ingredients 11

1 kg lean ground beef
1 large onion, finely chopped
1 tablespoon olive oil
3 large tomatoes, chopped
1/2 teaspoon dried oregano
1/2 teaspoon dried basil
1/2 teaspoon mustard powder
2 teaspoons sugar or 2 teaspoons brown sugar
1 tablespoon tomato paste
1/2 cup water
5 -6 hamburger buns

Steps:

  • Gently saute the onions until they are soft - you don't want to brown them, they need to be translucent and sweet.
  • Add the tomatoes, oregano, basil, mustard, tomato paste, sugar.
  • Simmer gently, covered, until the tomatoes are cooked, soft and loose.
  • Gently fry your beef until it is cooked, turn into the pan containing your tomato sauce. Add water.
  • Simmer gently until beef is tender and mixture has obtained 'sloppy' consistency.
  • Serve on split, toasted buns.
  • Alternatives and additions: Speed things up with a can of low-sodium tomato puree. Chopped mushrooms, sweetcorn, chile sauce, anything you can think of that your family or friends like can be added at the last stage.
