I loosely based this recipe on a trail mix sold at Trader Joe's. There is a recipe on Recipezaar for taro chips, but I have not tried them. It's on my list....

2 tablespoons crystallized ginger, cut into small pieces
1 cup macadamia nuts, roasted
2 (2 ounce) Mounds candy bars, diced small
1/2 cup dried pineapple, cut into small pieces
6 ounces taro chips (regular or spicy) or 6 ounces terra brand chips (regular or spicy)

Steps:

  • Combine all ingredients in large bowl.
  • Play around with the proportions.
  • Yield is estimated.

Furikake Chex Mix is a fun and easy Hawaii snack that we love to make and share with family and friends.

1 box Wheat Chex
1 box Corn Chex
1 box Honeycomb cereal
1 bag (any size) Fritos
1 bag (any size) Bugles
1 bag (any size and shape) pretzels
1 cup butter
1/2 cup Karo Syrup (or honey)
2/3 cup sugar
2/3 cup vegetable oil
2 tablespoons soy sauce
1 bottle Nori Goma Furikake

Steps:

  • Preheat the oven to 250F.
  • In two large pans, divide the Wheat (or Rice) Chex, Corn Chex, Honeycomb cereal, Bugles, Fritos, and Pretzels, evenly between the two pans. Set aside.
  • Now make the syrup. Melt the butter in a saucepan. Once melted, add in the Karo Syrup (or honey), sugar, vegetable oil, and soy sauce. Stir to mix.
  • Pour the syrup over the two pans of chex mix, make sure to divide the syrup equally between the two pans. Using two big spoons/spatulas, toss the chex mix until all the pieces are evenly coated with the syrup.
  • Then pour in the whole bottle of Nori Goma Furikake, split between the two pans. Stir until the furikake is mixed evenly.
  • Bake at 250F for 1 hour. Take the pan out every 15 minutes to toss/mix to make sure it cooks evenly.
  • Remove from oven, let cool. Then divide up into bags/containers and share. Everyone loves Furikake Chex Mix!

1/2 cup unsalted sunflower kernels
1/2 cup salted pumpkin seeds or pepitas
1/2 cup coarsely chopped cashews
1/2 cup coarsely chopped pecans
1/4 cup sweetened shredded coconut
1/4 cup finely chopped dried apricots
1/4 cup dried cranberries
1/4 cup dried cherries or blueberries

Steps:

  • In a large microwave-safe bowl, melt chocolate chips; stir until smooth. Stir in the remaining ingredients., Drop by tablespoonfuls onto waxed paper-lined baking sheets. Refrigerate until firm. Store in an airtight container in the refrigerator.

½ cup butter
½ cup white sugar
½ cup corn oil
½ cup light corn syrup (such as Karo®)
2 (12 ounce) packages crispy corn and rice cereal (such as Crispix®)
1 (1.9 ounce) container aji nori furikake (seasoned seaweed and sesame rice topping)

Steps:

  • Preheat oven to 225 degrees F (110 degrees C).
  • Melt the butter and sugar together in a small sauce pan over low heat. Remove from heat, then stir in the corn oil and corn syrup. Place the cereal on a large baking sheet. Pour the butter mixture over the cereal, then sprinkle the furikake while tossing the cereal to coat.
  • Bake in the preheated oven until the cereal is dry, stirring every 15 minutes to keep cereal from browning too quickly. Allow to cool, then store in an airtight container.
