3 2/3 cups flour
1 1/3 cups sugar
1 cup walnuts, coarsely chopped
1 orange, zest of
1/2 lemon, zest of
1/4 teaspoon baking soda
1 teaspoon baking powder
2 eggs
1 egg yolk
2 -3 teaspoons orange extract
4 ounces butter, melted

Steps:

  • Preheat oven to 350 degrees F In a large bowl, combine all of the dry ingredients (first 7 ingredients on list above).
  • In a small bowl slightly beat eggs& egg yolk together, and add to the dry ingredients along with the extract& the melted butter.
  • Mix by hand with a wooden spoon or with hands.
  • If dough is too stiff, add some juice from the zested orange.
  • Turn dough out onto work surface; knead lightly and form into two logs.
  • Place logs on lightly greased cookie sheet& flatten slightly.
  • Brush logs with beaten egg white.
  • Bake 30 minutes; let cool completely, then slice each log diagonally into 1" slices with serrated knife, using a sawing motion.
  • Stand the slices on the cookie sheet and return to the oven.
  • Bake an additional 7-10 minutes or until crisp.

2 cups flour
1 tablespoon baking powder
1 teaspoon salt
1/4 cup shortening
3/4 cup milk
2 -3 teaspoons orange zest, divided
1/4 cup butter, melted (or very soft)
1/2 cup sugar
1 teaspoon cinnamon
1 cup powdered sugar
1 -2 tablespoon milk or 1 -2 tablespoon orange juice
1 teaspoon orange zest

Steps:

  • Combine flour, baking powder and salt; cut in shortening.
  • Add 1-2 teaspoons orange zest to milk, stir.
  • Stir milk mixture into flour mixture with fork just until dough leaves sides of bowl, dough might be slightly sticky.
  • Roll dough out, on lightly floured surface, into a 1/4 inch thick rectangle.
  • Brush top with butter (I prefer to use soft butter and spread it).
  • Combine 1 teaspoons orange zest and sugar, stir to distribute the zest, mix in cinnamon; sprinkle evenly over dough.
  • Roll up, starting on long side.
  • Cut into 1/2 inch thick rounds.
  • Place rounds, with sides just touching, in greased 9" round pan.
  • Bake at 425°F for 18-20 minutes or until golden brown.
  • Remove from oven, cool for about 10 minutes and drizzle with glaze, serve warm.

1 cup shortening
2 cups sugar
2 large eggs, separated, room temperature
1 cup buttermilk
5 cups all-purpose flour
2 teaspoons baking powder
2 teaspoons baking soda
Pinch salt
Juice and grated zest of 2 medium navel oranges
ICING:
2 cups confectioners' sugar
1/4 cup orange juice
1 tablespoon butter
1 tablespoon grated orange zest

Steps:

  • Preheat oven to 325°. In a bowl, cream shortening and sugar. Beat in egg yolks and buttermilk. Sift together flour, baking powder, soda and salt; add to creamed mixture alternately with orange juice and zest. Add egg whites and beat until smooth. , Drop by rounded teaspoonfuls onto greased cookie sheets. Bake until set, about 10 minutes. Remove to wire racks to cool completely., For icing, combine all ingredients and beat until smooth. Frost cooled cookies.

2 teaspoons baking powder
2 teaspoons sugar
1/2 teaspoon salt
2 tablespoons butter (or margarine)
1 teaspoon finely shredded orange peel
1/3 cup orange juice
1/4 cup milk
2 tablespoons orange juice
2 tablespoons sugar

Steps:

  • Combine flour, baking powder, 2 teaspoons sugar, and salt in a mixing bowl.
  • Cut in butter until the mixture is crumbly. Make a well in the center and add orange peel, orange juice, and milk. Stir until dough just clings together.
  • Turn dough onto a lightly floured surface and knead 10-12 strokes. Roll or pat dough to 1/2" thickness. Cut with a 2-1/2" biscuit cutter.
  • Put biscuits onto a greased baking sheet. Brush tops with orange juice and sprinkle with sugar.
  • Bake at 450 degrees for 12-15 minutes.

Big, bakery-size doughnuts made from Pillsbury Grands biscuits. I have made lots with the regular-size biscuit, but they don't compare to these. Look and taste great! My husband said " Oh! you went to the bakery?"

1 (16 ounce) can Pillsbury Grands refrigerated buttermilk biscuits
9 cups oil, for deep fryer
1 cup sugar
1/4 cup cinnamon
1 (16 ounce) can icing
candy sprinkles (optional)

Steps:

  • Cut holes in biscuits (I used a lid to a large salt shaker 1-3/8" in diameter, worked great).
  • Heat oil to 375°F.
  • Mix cinnamon and sugar. Use extra cinnamon if you want. You can also add nutmeg,if desired.
  • Drop 4 biscuits in deep fryer and cook with lid shut, about 3 minutes each side, or till brown as you like them.
  • Remove to paper towel-lined plate.
  • Roll immediately in sugar and cinnamon.
  • If you are going to ice them, wait till they cool, You can also use sprinkles on icing. Enjoy!
