DARK AND STORMY PUNCH



Dark and Stormy Punch image

Number Of Ingredients 8

1 cup granulated sugar
1/4 cup grated peeled ginger
2 limes, zest removed with a peeler plus 1/4 cup lime juice
Four 12-ounce cans ginger beer, such as Gosling's, chilled
2 cups dark rum, such as Gosling's
2 limes, cut into wheels
1/2 cup high-quality maraschino cherries, such as Luxardo
Fresh mint sprigs, for garnish

Steps:

  • Chill highball glasses in the freezer.
  • For the punch: Combine the sugar, ginger and lime zest strips with 1/2 cup water in a small saucepan. Heat, stirring, until the sugar is dissolved. Let steep for 30 minutes.
  • Strain the syrup into a bowl and stir in the lime juice. In a large punch bowl, combine the syrup, ginger beer and rum.
  • For the garnish: Add ice to the chilled glasses, then divide the lime wheels, cherries and mint sprigs betweem the punch bowl and glasses. Serve the punch in the glasses.

3 ounces cloudy apple cider
1 heaping tablespoon Sweet and Hot Maple-Cinnamon Compound Butter, recipe follows
1/2 ounce butterscotch sauce
1 ounce calvados
1/4 ounce amaretto
1/4 ounce allspice dram liqueur
1 tablespoon fresh whipped cream, for garnish
Ground nutmeg, for garnish
2 tablespoons maple syrup
1/2 teaspoon crushed red pepper
1/4 teaspoon ground cinnamon
2 sticks (1 cup) salted butter, at room temperature
1 teaspoon vanilla extract

Steps:

  • Heat the apple cider, Sweet and Hot Maple-Cinnamon Compound Butter and butterscotch sauce in a small pan to a low simmer.
  • Pour the calvados, amaretto and allspice dram into a glass, then pour the warm liquid into the glass. Garnish with whipped cream and nutmeg and serve.
  • In a small pan, heat the maple syrup, crushed red pepper and cinnamon for 5 minutes to let the spices bloom. Take off the heat and let cool.
  • Put the butter into a bowl. Add the maple syrup mixture and vanilla and whisk until uniform.

GAME NIGHT PUNCH

1 large block of ice (made in a glass container or the bottom of a milk carton)
1 liter vodka
One 32-ounce bottle Concord grape juice, chilled
6 ounces fresh lime juice
3 ounces agave nectar
1/4 teaspoon ground clove
12 ounces club soda, chilled
1 naval orange, sliced
6 star anise pods

Steps:

  • Add 1 large block of ice to a punch bowl, then add the vodka and grape juice and stir thoroughly. Add the lime juice, agave and clove to a mixing tin, shake vigorously and pour the contents into the punch bowl. Add the club soda and stir thoroughly. Garnish with the orange slices and star anise and serve.

  • Heat 1 cup each sugar and water in a saucepan over medium heat until the sugar is dissolved; cool completely. Puree 6 cups chopped seedless watermelon in a blender. Pour 3 cups of the watermelon puree into a pitcher; add 3 cups vodka, 1 cup lime juice and 1 cup of the simple syrup. Serve over ice and garnish with mint.

3 cups watermelon puree
1 cup fresh lime juice
1/2 cup Simple Syrup, recipe follows
Hollowed-out watermelon, for serving, optional
Fresh mint, for garnish
1 cup sugar

Steps:

  • Pour the vodka, watermelon puree, lime juice and Simple Syrup into a pitcher. Add to a punch bowl or a hollowed-out watermelon. Serve in punch glasses over ice and garnished with mint.
  • Combine the sugar and 1 cup water in a small saucepan and bring to a boil. Cook, stirring, until the sugar dissolves. Remove from the heat and let cool completely. Keep covered in the refrigerator for up to 1 month.

MULLED CRANBERRY PUNCH

4 cups unfiltered cranberry juice
4 cups apple cider
1 cup maple syrup
1 cup honey
1 teaspoon grated clove or nutmeg
12 star anise pods
Cinnamon sticks, for garnish

Steps:

  • Put the rum, cranberry juice, cider, maple syrup, honey, clove and star anise into a large saucepot over medium heat. Cook until a slow simmer is just reached and the honey/maple syrup is dissolved.
  • Ladle the punch into heatproof glasses or mugs and garnish with cinnamon sticks.
