Most mint juleps nowadays are made with bourbon, but gin was just as popular a base in the 19th century. Our throwback recipe will be just as crowd-pleasing at your Kentucky Derby party.

Number Of Ingredients 5

12 fresh mint leaves, plus sprig for garnish
1 1/2 teaspoons superfine sugar
2 ounces gin
Crushed ice
Seltzer

Steps:

  • In the bottom of a julep cup, muddle mint with sugar until mint starts to break down. Add gin; stir until sugar dissolves. Add ice to fill cup three-quarters of the way; top with seltzer. Stir, top with more ice, and garnish with mint sprig. Serve immediately.

Number Of Ingredients 3

6 mint leaves, plus a sprig for garnish
3/4 ounce simple syrup
2 1/2 ounces genever gin

Steps:

  • In a tall glass, lightly press mint into simple syrup with a muddler or long-handled spoon. Fill glass with cracked ice. Add gin and stir energetically with a swizzle stick or long-handled spoon until frost forms on outside of glass. Top off with more cracked ice, plant a mint sprig on top, and serve with a straw.
