GEWUERZPLAETZCHEN (TRADITIONAL GERMAN SPICE COOKIES)

Gewuerzplaetzchen (Traditional German Spice Cookies) image

This recipe comes from Dr. Oetker and is very, very good. It gets better and better as the cookies age and the taste is just wonderful. I think these cookies bring instant Christmas spirit to even the most uncheerful person. ;) I hope you like them as much as we do! Note: These need to chill for 1 hour.

This is a German spice cut-out cookie recipe from my mother-in-law! They are absolutely wonderful!

Number Of Ingredients 11

2 1/2 c flour (minus 1 tbs)
1 tsp baking powder
3/4 c sugar
1 tsp vanilla
1 tsp cinnamon
1/4 tsp cardamon *
1/4 tsp cloves *
1 egg
1 stick butter, plus 2 tbs
1 c ground hazelnut
*NOTE see comment below on clove and cardamon measures.

Steps:

  • 1. Cream butter and sugar together until well blended. Add egg and vanilla.
  • 2. In a separate bowl combine all dry ingredients and mix well.
  • 3. Gradually add dry mixture to the butter mixture.
  • 4. Roll out dough on a floured board to 1/8" thickness. Cut with your favorite shaped cookie cutters and place on ungreased cookie sheets.
  • 5. Bake at 350 just until edges start to turn a slight brown.
  • 6. Cool and decorate as desired.
  • 7. Note: These cookies are best when rolled very thin.
  • 8. Photo is from Google images.
  • 9. She says the authentic German way to make these is to NOT use a mixer. She measures ALL ingredients onto countertop, cuts in butter and "kneads" by hand until it is all combined.
