BEST HEALTHY VEGAN INDIAN NAAN (OR GARLIC NAAN) BREAD!

Best Healthy Vegan Indian Naan (Or Garlic Naan) Bread! image

Most healthier naan recipes didn't taste as good to us as the recipes that included oil and dairy. So, we came up with this yummy and healthier alternative that amazingly still has no added oil or dairy! Like most naan recipes it is time consuming, but we love Indian food and can't seem to eat it without the naan. Add the garlic to turn the plain naan into garlic naan (our favorite). We use our recipe Recipe #247817 for the vegan sour cream, but you can also find it in grocery or health food stores.

NAAN BREAD WITH GARLIC AND CORIANDER/CILANTRO

Naan bread with garlic and coriander/cilantro image

The original recipe of this was a watch the bread rise, knead, leave etc...time consuming and not much fun. Throw a breadmaker into the equation and you can get on with making all the yummy things to accompany the naan. A good basic recipe that disappears quickly.

Time 2h10m

Yield 4 serving(s)

Number Of Ingredients 9

200 ml water
1 teaspoon sugar
1 teaspoon dry active yeast
225 g plain whole wheat flour
225 g self-rising flour
1 1/2 teaspoons salt
1 tablespoon fresh lemon juice
3 -4 cloves garlic, finely chopped (depending on preference) (optional)
3 tablespoons fresh coriander, finely chopped (optional)

Steps:

  • Make sure your breadmaker is clean and add the ingredients in the order the manufacturer suggests.
  • Mix on the dough setting.
  • When ready to cook the naan (just before serving), knead for another 50 strokes and then divide into naans (make them as big or as small as you like).
  • Form balls of dough and then flatten into thin ovals (to make this easier, you can wet your hands and use your fingertips to spread the dough across the base of a frying pan).
  • Use oil spray to stop them from sticking.
  • Preheat a grill/broiler.
  • Now put the frying pan on medium heat, letting the naan cook until the bottoms are golden-brown (they will move easily when you shake the pan gently).
  • Stick the frying pan under the grill (don't let the plastic handle go under too far!), and let the naans cook until puffed up and golden.
  • Serve immediately with hommous, beans, curry or just eat them by themselves.
  • Alternatively, you can let them cool and then freeze them.

GARLIC GREEK YOGHURT NAAN BREAD | SLIMMING EATS RECIPE

Garlic Greek Yoghurt Naan Bread | Slimming Eats Recipe image

Garlic Greek Yoghurt Naan Bread - a basic dough using just a couple of ingredients to make the most delicious healthier buttery naan breads to accompany a variety of dishes for your Indian Fakeaway night.

Provided by @MakeItYours

Number Of Ingredients 9

150g (5.3oz) of plain flour
2 teaspoons of baking powder
pinch of fine sea salt
180g (6.4oz) of Fat Free Plain Greek Yoghurt (not Greek Style) - *see notes
2 cloves of garlic, minced
1/2 tablespoon of butter
1 tablespoon of finely chopped fresh cilantro (coriander)
sea salt
cooking oil spray

Steps:

  • Reserve a small amount of flour for dusting (about ¾ of a tablespoon) Combine the rest of the flour, baking powder and pinch of sea salt in a bowl
  • Add the Greek Yoghurt (make sure you only add the thick yoghurt part, none of the natural liquid that sits on top) and 1 of the minced garlic cloves and mix with a silicone spatula until all ingredients combined and the sides of the bowl are clear (don't use hands for this part or the dough will stick to your hands). Once you have one big ball of dough, you can knead all together with hands before proceeding to the next steps.
  • Divide the dough into 6 equal sized balls.
  • Dust one ball of the dough with a little reserved flour - place in between wax paper or parchment paper. Then place a board or heavy saucepan on top and flatten down as much as you can into a flat circle.
  • Then dust again and use a rolling pin to roll to naan bread shapes (Approx 5x7inches), transfer to a plate.
  • Repeat with remaining balls of dough.
  • Once all the naan breads are shaped. Heat a large frying pan (I like to use my cast iron pan for these, as you get the best result) over a medium high heat and spray with cooking oil spray.
  • When the pan is hot, add the naan bread (you can cook 2 to 3 at a time depending on the size of your pan), cook each side for approx 3 minutes, until browned/golden areas like a traditional naan bread. Watch they don't burn by just lifting to check, you may need to lower your heat slightly.
  • Once cooked melt the butter add the remaining minced garlic clove and finely chopped cilantro and brush this over the naan breads. I also like to add a pinch of sea salt to each one.
  • Enjoy!!!

GARLIC NAAN BREAD RECIPE - (4.6/5)

Garlic Naan Bread Recipe - (4.6/5) image

Provided by Pilly

Number Of Ingredients 9

1 3/4 cup all Self Raising Flour
1/2 tsp Salt
1 1/2 tsp active Dry Yeast
1/4 cup warm Skim Milk
1/2 cup Plain Yogurt
1/2 tsp Sugar
1 tsp Garlic Powder or 1 Clove Garlic, minced
1/2 tsp Cumin
Butter

Steps:

  • *Dissolve sugar in milk and add yeast. Stir to combine and allow to rest for 5-10 minutes. *In a large bowl, blend flour, salt, and seasonings. *Pour in the milk and yogurt and stir with a spoon until you are unable to do so. Continue by kneading until all flour is incorporated and dough is soft and elastic. *Form into a ball, return to bowl and cover with a damp towel for 2-3 hours (or until doubled). *When ready, pull dough into 5-10 pieces (depending on if you doubled the recipe). *Roll out to 1/8″ thickness. *In hot skillet, melt butter or ghee. *Brush naan with water and place in pan. When large bubbles begin to form, brush with water and flip over. *You can also bake your naan: Turn oven to 400°F, line a baking tray in aluminum foil, brush dough with butter, ghee or olive oil, bake until dough begins to bubble and brown. Flip over and allow to finish. *Naan is versatile and can be served with many dishes. Some examples are curries, butter chicken, hummus, tzatziki, any dips you would dip bread into really as well as doubling as a delicious pizza crust.
