In summer I make this pie to take to church suppers, where chocolate desserts are a hit. It's light and refreshing, and can be served either chilled or frozen.

4 ounces German sweet chocolate, chopped
5 tablespoons whole milk, divided
3 ounces cream cheese, softened
2 tablespoons sugar
1 carton (8 ounces) frozen whipped topping, thawed
1 graham cracker crust (9 inches)

Steps:

  • In a saucepan, heat chocolate and 2 tablespoons milk over low heat, stirring until chocolate is melted. In a small bowl, beat cream cheese and sugar. Add melted chocolate and remaining milk; beat until smooth. Fold in whipped topping. Spoon into crust and freeze until firm.

How to make Frozen German Chocolate Pie

1/2 (14.1-ounce) package refrigerated pie dough
1/4 cup butter or margarine
3 cups sweetened flaked coconut
1 cup chopped pecans
1 (8-ounce) package cream cheese, softened
1 (14-ounce) can sweetened condensed milk
2 (4-ounce) dark chocolate bars, melted
1 (8-ounce) container frozen extra-creamy whipped
topping, thawed
1/2 cup caramel ice-cream topping

Steps:

  • 2 cup caramel ice-cream topping
  • Preheat oven to 450˚. On a lightly floured surface, roll out dough to make 1 (11-inch) pie crust. Place in a (9-inch) deep-dish pie plate. Trim excess pastry 1/2 inch beyond edge of pie plate. Fold under dough hanging over edge, and pinch dough to give crust a wavy edge. Using a fork, prick bottom and sides of pie crust. Bake for 10 minutes or until golden brown. Cool completely on a wire rack.
  • In a large skillet, melt butter. Stir in coconut and pecans. Cook for 2 to 3 minutes or until lightly browned. Remove from heat.
  • In a large bowl, beat cream cheese, sweetened condensed milk, and chocolate. Fold in whipped topping.
  • Spoon half of cream-cheese mixture into prepared crust. Top with 1/4 cup caramel topping and half of coconut mixture. Repeat layers with remaining ingredients. Cover with plastic wrap, and freeze for at least 4 hours or until firm.
  • Let frozen pie stand at room temperature for 5 minutes before slicing.

1 bag sweetened shredded coconut, divided
3 tablespoon melted butter
1 (1.5-quart) container Breyers® Chocolate Ice Cream
1/2 cup salted peanuts
2 tablespoon Breyers® Caramel Flavored Ice Cream Sauce

Steps:

  • Preheat oven to 350 degrees F. Spray a 9-inch deep dish pie plate with non-stick cooking spray, and set aside. -- Set aside 1/2 cup of the coconut, then combine remaining coconut with melted butter in a medium mixing bowl. Toss until mixture is evenly moistened, then firmly press into bottom and sides of prepared pie dish. Bake 15 minutes. Cool completely on a wire rack. -- Spread 2 Tbsp caramel ice cream sauce evenly over top. Allow the chocolate ice cream to soften at room temperature slightly then spread into cooled crust while smoothing top to form an even layer. Then, sprinkle evenly with remaining coconut and salted peanuts. Repeat a layer of caramel sauce. -- Freeze until pie is firm enough to cut into clean slices. About 1 hour.
