This is one of my husband's favorite winter drinks. I love the minty, chocolaty recipe because it's like Christmas in a cup. Be sure to use fresh mint leaves and don't skimp on the chocolate or whipped cream either! -Alyssa Ponticello, Brooklyn, New York

Number Of Ingredients 11

8 fresh mint leaves
1 ounce dark baking chocolate, melted
WHIPPED CREAM:
1/2 cup heavy whipping cream
3 tablespoons sugar
1/8 teaspoon peppermint extract
HOT CHOCOLATE:
4 cups 2% milk
1/2 cup heavy whipping cream
4 teaspoons minced fresh mint (about 16 leaves)
1 cup semisweet chocolate chips

Steps:

  • Brush both sides of mint leaves with melted chocolate. Place on a waxed paper-lined baking sheet; refrigerate until set., In a small bowl, beat cream until it begins to thicken. Add sugar and extract; beat until soft peaks form. Refrigerate until serving., In a large saucepan, heat milk and cream over medium heat just to simmering (do not boil). Remove from heat; add mint. Whisk in chocolate chips until melted; return to heat and heat through., If desired, pour hot chocolate through a strainer to remove mint leaves. Top servings with whipped cream and chocolate leaves.

2 ounces semisweet or bittersweet chocolate, chopped
4 teaspoons packed light-brown sugar
2 teaspoons unsweetened Dutch-process cocoa powder
1/8 teaspoon kosher salt
1/3 cup cold heavy cream

Steps:

  • In a saucepan, combine milk, chocolate, sugar, cocoa powder, and salt. Heat over medium, whisking frequently, until chocolate melts and mixture is smooth. Cover to keep warm.
  • Whisk cream to soft peaks in a bowl. Divide hot chocolate between two mugs, dollop each with whipped cream, and serve immediately.

I found this recipe on the internet. It was developed by Richard Sterling and is his version of how the Spaniards transformed Montezuma's favorite beverage.

12 ounces prepared hot cocoa
2 tablespoons honey
1/2 teaspoon vanilla extract
3 fluid ounces peppar vodka
2 tablespoons heavy cream
cayenne powder, for garnish
cinnamon stick, for garnish
grated chocolate, for garnish
dried red chili, for garnish

Steps:

  • Combine the hot chocolate, honey, vanilla and vodka in a small pitcher.
  • Pour into two tall glasses or Irish coffee glasses.
  • Pour 1 tablespoon of cream on the top of each glass and let it float.
  • Dust with a pinch of cayenne pepper and garnish with cinnamon sticks. If preferred, you may garnish with grated chocolate and a dried red chile.

6-1/2 cups water
2 teaspoons vanilla extract
Optional: Sweetened whipped cream, marshmallows, chocolate syrup and Pirouette cookies

  • Place milk and cocoa in a large saucepan; cook and stir over medium heat until blended. Gradually stir in water; heat through, stirring occasionally., Remove from heat; stir in vanilla. Add toppings as desired.
