1 cup pearl onions
4 cups water
6 tablespoons butter
6 tablespoons all-purpose flour
3 cups milk
1 pinch salt to taste
1 pinch ground black pepper to taste

Steps:

  • Peel onions, and drop into boiling water. Cook until tender. Drain, reserving liquid. Set onions aside while you make the sauce.
  • Melt butter or margarine in a saucepan over medium heat. Whisk in flour to make a paste. Mix together cooking water and milk. Add milk mixture slowly to the saucepan, stirring constantly, and cook until thickened. Add salt and pepper to taste. Add onions, and transfer to a serving dish.

This simple recipe for creamed onions makes a delicious holiday side dish. Serve the creamy onions with boiled ham or a turkey dinner.

Number Of Ingredients 8

3 pounds small white onions
1 teaspoon salt ( divided )
1/4 cup butter
5 tablespoons flour
2 cups of milk
Optional: a few drops hot sauce
Optional: fresh chopped chives
Optional: fresh chopped parsley

Steps:

  • Gather the ingredients.
  • Peel the onions and place them in a large saucepan. Add 1/2 teaspoon of the salt and enough water to cover.
  • Place the pan over high heat and bring the onions to a boil. Reduce the heat to low and cover the pan; cook for 20 to 25 minutes. Drain and set aside.
  • Melt the butter in a medium saucepan over medium-low heat; add the flour and the remaining 1/2 teaspoon salt. Cook the flour and butter slurry for about 2 minutes, stirring constantly.
  • Gradually add the milk; cook until the mixture thickens and comes to a boil, stirring constantly. Add the hot sauce, if using, and stir to blend. Taste and adjust seasonings.
  • Add the drained onions to the sauce; heat through and garnish with fresh chopped chives or parsley, if desired.
  • Serve and enjoy!

A basic ole recipe. Nothing fancy or smancie. Just plain good cooking. I have served this with salmon patties.....etc. Try it you might like it. Sorta nice to go back to your grandma's cooking. You will never find this in a can!!

3 c sliced white onions
1/4 c melted butter
2 Tbsp flour
1 Tbsp salt
1/4 tsp dried thyme, crushed
1 c milk
dash of pepper

Steps:

  • 1. Peel and slice onions. Cook , covered in a large amount of boiling salted water till tender. 20-ti 25 minutes. Drain. In another saucepan mix butter,flour, salt and thyme, and a dash of pepper. Blend in milk, cook , stirring constantly,till thickened and bubbly. Stir in the cooked onion slices Heat and serve.

6 large onions, sliced
1 cup butter
2 teaspoons all-purpose flour
2 teaspoons salt

  • In a large skillet or Dutch oven, saute onions in butter until tender and golden brown, about 25 minutes. Remove with a slotted spoon. Add flour, salt and pepper to skillet; stir until smooth. I often fix this comforting dish for my grown children when they visit. They love it when I double the recipe so they can take leftovers home! This recipe can be prepared a day ahead and refrigerated before baking.

5 medium onions, sliced and separated into rings
3 tablespoons butter
3/4 cup water
1/8 teaspoon ground allspice
2 tablespoons all-purpose flour
1 can (5 ounces) evaporated milk
1 teaspoon sugar
1/2 teaspoon salt
2 tablespoons grated Parmesan cheese
2 tablespoons dry bread crumbs

Steps:

  • In a large skillet, saute onions in butter for 5 minutes. Add water and allspice; bring to a boil. Reduce heat; cover and simmer for 15-20 minutes or until tender., Combine flour and evaporated milk until smooth; gradually stir into the onion mixture. Bring to a boil; cook and stir for 2 minutes or until thickened. Stir in sugar and salt., Transfer to a greased 1-qt. baking dish; sprinkle with cheese and bread crumbs. Bake, uncovered, at 350° for 30-35 minutes or until bubbly.
