CORPSE REVIVER

Corpse Reviver image

Who cares what is in this cocktail? The name sold me when I read it in Harry Craddock's The Savoy Cocktail Book (1930). This is one of many variations.

CORPSE REVIVER NO. 2

Corpse Reviver No. 2 image

It's not surprising that this 19th-century cocktail has, forgive me, been brought back from the dead to an enthusiastic response. It's easy to love and easy to drink: lemony, dry (but not too dry) and ever so subtly deepened by absinthe. But be careful, for, as "The Savoy Cocktail Book" famously warns: "Four of these taken in swift succession will unrevive the corpse again."

Provided by Rosie Schaap

Number Of Ingredients 5

3/4 oz. dry gin
3/4 oz. Cointreau
3/4 oz. Cocchi Americano
3/4 oz. fresh lemon juice
Scant teaspoon absinthe

Steps:

  • Chill a coupe glass, and evenly coat the inside with absinthe. Shake remaining ingredients with ice. Strain into coupe.

CORPSE REVIVER NO. 2 COCKTAIL

Corpse Reviver No. 2 Cocktail image

Popularized by the famous Savoy Cocktail Book in 1930, this potent cocktail -- one of a series of corpse revivers -- got its name because it was created as a hangover cure. It's not hard to see how this bracing, bright concoction would cure any manner of ailment.

CORPSE REVIVER NO. 1

Corpse Reviver No. 1 image

This cocktail gets less love than its more popular sibling, the Corpse Reviver No. 2, but that shouldn't be the case: the No. 1 is exceptionally elegant. The warmth of the brandy and the apple flavor of the Calvados combine to make it a natural for autumn drinking, but I wouldn't turn it down any other time of year.

Provided by Rosie Schaap

Yield 1 drink

Number Of Ingredients 3

1 1/2 oz. brandy
3/4 oz. Calvados
3/4 oz. sweet Italian vermouth

Steps:

MEZCAL CORPSE REVIVER

Mezcal Corpse Reviver image

Charles Cerankosky, a Rochester bar owner, has fielded plenty of creative orders in his day. One of the most unusual requests was to use mezcal instead of gin in a Corpse Reviver, a sour that dates back a century. This twist is not a natural fit, so Mr. Cerankosky replaced the usual lemon juice with a mix of lime and grapefruit juice to better complement the mezcal. With all that's going on in this drink, the mezcal almost gets lost, if that's possible. Still, its smokiness lingers in the back, and the panoply of flavors is intriguing enough to lure you back for another sip.

Categories     cocktails

Yield 1 drink

Number Of Ingredients 6

1 ounce Cocchi Americano
3/4 ounce mezcal, preferably El Buho
3/4 ounce Curaçao, preferably Pierre Ferrand Dry
1/4 ounce lime juice
1/2 ounce grapefruit juice
1 bar spoon absinthe for rinse, preferably St. George Absinthe Verte

Steps:

  • In a cocktail shaker half-filled with ice, combine mezcal, Cocchi Americano, Curaçao and the 2 juices. Shake until chilled, about 30 seconds. Coat the inside of a chilled coupe glass with the absinthe. Pour out any excess absinthe. Strain contents of the mixing glass into the coupe.

CORPSE REVIVER NO. 28

Corpse Reviver No. 28 image

The bartender Mimi Burnham's take on the Corpse Reviver makes use of some uncommon ingredients that are worth seeking out: a barrel-aged Genever (a particularly rich and flavorful Dutch gin) and Grand Liqueur de Sapins (a sweet, seductive liqueur made with pine buds). When she has time, Burnham cuts orange peel into the shapes of tiny men and sets them to float, or drown, in the drink; I wholeheartedly endorse this garnish.

Yield 1 drink

Number Of Ingredients 7

3/4 oz. Boomsma Oude Fine Old Genever
3/4 oz. Cointreau
3/4 oz. Lillet Blanc
1/2 oz. fresh lemon juice
1/4 oz. fresh lime juice
Scant teaspoon of Grande Liqueur de Sapins
Orange twist

Steps:

  • Chill a coupe glass, and evenly coat inside with liqueur de sapin. Shake remaining ingredients with ice. Strain into coupe. Express the orange twist over the cocktail and drop it in.

CORPSE REVIVER #2

Corpse Reviver #2 image

The Corpse Reviver #2 is one of a small family of drinks originally concocted as hangover remedies, of which Harry Craddock, cataloging them in the "Savoy Cocktail Book" in 1930, wrote, "To be taken before 11 a.m., or whenever steam and energy are needed." (He also famously cautioned: "Four of these taken in swift succession will quickly unrevive the corpse again.") You can occasionally find it on cocktail lists. But there's no point in waiting on chance: learn to make this.

3/4 ounce gin
3/4 ounce lemon juice
3/4 ounce Cointreau
3/4 ounce Cocchi Aperitivo Americano
Scant bar-spoon-ful quality absinthe (see note).

Steps:

  • Combine ingredients over ice, shake vigorously and strain into cocktail coupe or pony glass. A garnish is unnecessary, but different recipes call for either a twist of lemon or a real maraschino cherry.
