My husband was at a client's house and she served these to him. He loved them and asked her for the recipe so I could make them. Neither of us like dates or cherries, but we love these cookies.

2 1/4 cups all-purpose flour
1 teaspoon baking powder
1/2 teaspoon baking soda
1/2 teaspoon salt
3/4 cup shortening
1 cup granulated sugar
2 large eggs
2 tablespoons half-and-half
1 teaspoon pure vanilla extract
1 cup dates, chopped
1 cup pecans or 1 cup walnuts, chopped
1/3 cup maraschino cherry, chopped
2 1/2 cups corn flakes, very finely crushed
maraschino cherry, chopped (optional)

Steps:

  • In large bowl, sift together flour, baking powder, baking soda and salt.
  • In a large mixing bowl, cream together the shortening and granulated sugar.
  • Blend in the eggs, one at a time, until well combined.
  • Add the milk and vanilla.
  • Gradually add the flour mixture and mix well.
  • Carefully add the chopped dates, nuts and 1/3 cup cherries and mix well.
  • Chill dough for about 1 hour so it is easier to roll into balls.
  • Shape dough into small balls using a level tablespoon for each cookie.
  • Roll each ball into the crushed cornflakes.
  • Place on greased baking sheet or parchment-lined baking sheet.
  • Top each cookie with 1/4 of a cherry, if desired.
  • Bake at 375 degrees for 10-12 minutes.

1 teaspoon double-acting baking powder
1/2 teaspoon salt
1/2 cup shortening
3/4 cup corn flakes, crushed
1 cup granulated sugar
2 eggs
2 tablespoons milk
1 teaspoon vanilla extract
1 cup pecans, chopped
1 cup dates, chopped or 1 cup raisins, not chopped
1/3 cup maraschino cherry, chopped
cherries, for decorating (optional)

Steps:

  • Preheat oven to 375 deg F.
  • Combine shortening and sugar, cream.
  • Add eggs, milk, and vanilla extract.
  • Sift together dry ingredients, and slowly blend in.
  • Mix well.
  • Add nuts, cherries or raisins and mix well.
  • Shape into balls using a level teaspoon of dough for each cookie.
  • Roll ball in crushed cornflakes.
  • Place on greased cookie sheet.
  • Top with ½ cherry and press the cherry down a bit.
  • Bake at 375 deg F for 10 to 12 minutes until golden brown.

Cherry Winks have been in my family for over fifty years. We bake them for all "important" occations. They look pretty and taste great. I'm not sure where the recipe orginated but I remember one of my friend's grandmother making them eons ago.

Number Of Ingredients 13

1/2 tsp baking soda
2 1/4 c sifted flour
1 tsp baking powder
1/2 tsp salt
3/4 c soft butter
1 c sugar
2 eggs
2 Tbsp milk
1 tsp vanilla
1 c chopped nuts - pecans or walnuts
1 c finely cut pitted dates
1/3 c finely cut maraschino cherries
2 1/2 c corn flakes

Steps:

  • 1. Cut 12 maraschino cherries in quarters.
  • 2. Sift together flour, baking powder, baking soda & salt.
  • 3. In a separate bowl, blend sugar & butter.
  • 4. Add eggs to sugar and butter mixture. Blend eggs into mixture.
  • 5. Stir in milk and vanilla.
  • 6. Add dry ingredients to sugar & butter mixture.
  • 7. Add nuts, dates and cherries to mixture.
  • 8. Crush cornflakes into fine crumbs in a separate bowl.
  • 9. Shape dough into one tablespoon balls.
  • 10. Roll dough balls into finely crushed cornflakes.
  • 11. Place cookie balls onto a greased cookie sheet.
  • 12. Top each cookie ball with 1/4 of a cherry.
  • 13. Bake at 375 for 12 minutes.
