COLORED SANDING SUGAR FOR COOKIE & CUPCAKE DECORATING
This isn't a recipe so much as it is a method. If you keep coarse sugar (turbinado, or AA-grade large crystal coarse sugar) around and don't want to buy colored sugar, this is the method for making colored sanding sugar-- gel food dye is the best for this but I also included instructions for the liquid food coloring you can pick up in most grocery stores. (1 serving = 1 tablespoon)

Steps:
- If using the GEL METHOD:.
- Put the sugar into a bowl.
- On a spoon, put a little dab of the color(s) you want to use. A little goes a long way; gel colors stain much more deeply than liquid.
- With a toothpick or the tines of a fork, mix the dab with a few drops of water-- no more than 4-5 drops of so. Be really careful with this step because if there's too little water, it won't diffuse enough. Too much water and the color won't stick. I like using a medicine dropper for this.
- Carefully stir the spoon into the bowl of sugar, mixing thoroughly.
- Shake the bowl occasionally to properly disperse the coloring.
- Let the bowl of sugar sit in a safe area that is cool and dry for at least 10 minutes so the color can dry.
- If using the LIQUID METHOD:.
- How many drops you use determine how deep you'd like the color to be or how many are required to get a certain hue. About 4-5 are medium shade depending on which one you use, ie you only need about 2 or 3 of red to get pink but about 8-10 for red.
- Put the drops on a spoon, and mix thoroughly through the bowl of corase sugar.
- Shake the bowl a few times to disperse all the dye. If it looks like "spotting", add another 2-3 drops of coloring to the spoon and mix again.
- When you are satisfied with the color, let the bowl sit in a cool dry area for about 5-10 minutes to let the color seep in and dry.
- FUN TIPS:.
- For rainbow sugar using the liquid dyes, don't put the dye on the spoon. Randomly put a few drops in the bowl and quickly stir it up, careful not to blend the colors together.
- Put the sugar into separate bowls to get different colors instead of having to buy a whole container of colored sugar if you only want just a little bit.

LEMON SUGAR COOKIES WITH SANDY'S COLORED SUGAR
Steps:
- Preheat oven to 350 degrees F.
- In a medium bowl, beat the butter and sugar on medium-high speed with an electric mixer until fluffy, about 3 minutes. Add the lemon zest and juice and mix well. In a separate medium bowl, combine the flour, baking soda, and salt. Gradually add the flour mixture to butter mixture and mix to combine. Shape into a log and wrap in heavy-duty plastic wrap. Refrigerate until firm, at least 2 hours.
- Divide the sugar between 2 small resealable plastic bags. Add 8 to 10 drops of 1 color of food coloring to each bag. Shake vigorously to distribute and color the sugar. Put the colored sugar into 2 separate plates.
- Slice the log into 1/2-inch thick rounds. Dip the cookies on 1 side into the sugar, making 12 of each color. Arrange the cookies on baking sheets, spacing evenly, and bake until lightly browned, about 12 to 15 minutes. Remove from the oven, allow to cool slightly, then remove the cookies from the pans. Cool completely on wire racks before serving.

HOMEMADE EDIBLE GLITTER - COLORED SALT OR SUGAR
Easy, cheap and fun! Coat the rim of a drink with this or let the kids use it like glitter for a rainy day art project. I actually made pink and green salt and sugar for my dd's bridal shower. There are so many uses for this! Kids of all ages love this! Great for wedding and baby showers, kids parties or craft projects etc,. Try different types of salt from fine to coarse if you like. Great way to get the kids involved! Try the sugar on top of breads, cookies or even toast! Storing in a clear salt shaker makes it easy to see the contents. Try making several colors and/or mixing two or more food colors to make a 'new' color. Great way to teach kids colors, math =measuring and so on. This is also just a great way to have fun and save money at the same time! You can use this same method to color rice, pasta, coconut flakes etc... Experiment and have FUN!

Steps:
- Measure salt or sugar into a clear jar with a tight fitting lid. Add food coloring one drop at a time and screw the cap on tightly. SHAKE to combine. Repeat until desired color is reached.
- Sprinkle, dip or shake onto whatever you like. I like to put this in a clear salt shaker for easy shaking or pour some into a saucer and dip the wet rim of an empty glass in it to make the glass pretty!
- Tip: This will keep for a very long time. This stays drier and stores wonderfully as is but even better if you spread colored salt/sugar in a thin layer to air dry for about an hour or microwave in 30 second intervals, stir and repeat for about 1-2 minutes or until moisture is evaporated. You can also add a few grains of rice to absorb any moisture.

Steps:
- 1. Place desired amount of sugar in a resealable plastic bag. Add 1 to 3 drops of food coloring. Squeeze out all air, and massage the color into the sugar until no clumps remain (measurements are just a starting point, use as much sugar as needed and drops of food coloring to get desired color).
- 2. NOTE: You can use gel or liquid food coloring. Both work well. Just takes a little more massaging the sugars in the bag to soften them up when using liquid food coloring.
- 3. Including some "Sugar Eggs" for Gail.
