GINGERBREAD CHRISTMAS ORNAMENTS

Gingerbread Christmas Ornaments image

These look and smell like real gingerbread, but are not edible! They are extremely cute ornaments for the tree, and can be decorated with acrylic paint once they are dry! They harden up very well, and will last for years if cared for. I have so many good memories of taking out the tin of these on Christmas, and having the house smell like gingerbread instantly while trimming the tree! Note: Prep time includes cooling time before baking, as well as hardening time after baking.

Time P2DT20m

Yield 30-40 cookies

Number Of Ingredients 9

6 tablespoons shortening
1 cup sugar
1 cup molasses
2 teaspoons baking soda
2 teaspoons ground cloves
2 teaspoons ginger
2 teaspoons cinnamon
7 cups flour
1 1/2 cups water

Steps:

  • Preheat oven to 350 degrees.
  • Beat shortening and sugar together in a large bowl. Stir in molasses.
  • Sift baking soda, ground cloves, ginger, cinnamon and flour together in a large bowl. Stir this mixture plus water into the sugar and shortening mixture, alternately adding the water and baking soda mixture to the shortening mixture.
  • Stir until mixed thoroughly and refrigerate 6-8 hours.
  • Cut dough into three equal pieces, knead each piece lightly and then use a rolling pin to roll out each piece to a 1/4-inch thickness.
  • Use holiday cookie cutters made in the shapes of gingerbread people and houses to cut shapes out of the dough.
  • Use a medium- to large-sized drinking straw or the end of a wooden chopstick to make a hole at the top of each shape. *Tip: make sure to really make a sizable hole (bigger than you think you need), as these do puff up in the cooking process, making the hole shrink.
  • Put cookies on cookie sheets and bake for about 20 minutes. Turn oven off and allow cookies to cool in the oven. This will help harden the cookies.
  • Place cookies on racks to completely harden. Place racks in a cool, dry place and let sit for two to three days.
  • Coat cookies with clear acrylic or varnish and allow cookies to dry thoroughly.
  • Paint cookies with acrylic paints as desired. Allow paint to dry thoroughly.
  • Thread a 5- to 6-inch length of narrow ribbon or cording through the hole at the top of each ornament. You may have to use a toothpick to chip a little bit of cookie out of the hole if it has closed up a bit, before threading with ribbon. Knot ends and hang ornaments.

HOMEMADE CHRISTMAS ORNAMENTS/CHILD'S CRAFT

Homemade Christmas Ornaments/Child's Craft image

This is a beautiful homemade Christmas Ornament; and it could easily be used to make ornaments for anything...key rings, gifts, other holiday decorations, etc. This one takes a little bit more preparation and some materials you may need to plan ahead for; but as you can see, the finished product is worth it. Very lovely. It increases small motor skills for young children or other challenged people. Check it out, you may want to make these!

Number Of Ingredients 11

- paper casting powder
- cotton linter (both can be purchased at art supply or craft stores)
- blender
- strainer or wire screen
- sponge
- towel
- knife or nail file
- decorative ceramic molds or holiday cookie/candy molds
- needle and thin cord or ribbon
- watercolor paints
- hot glue gun and trimmings (buttons, dried flours, glitter, ribbons, beads, etc.) last two are optional.

Steps:

  • Either ask your child or you fill the blender with 1 quart of warm water.
  • Have her tear a sheet of cotton linter (about 8 inches by 7 inches) into strips about 1 to 2 inches in length. Allow the linter to soak for 5 minutes
  • While the cotton linter is soaking, ask your child to spray the inside of the ceramic molds with a light, even coat of vegetable oil.
  • After waiting about 5 minutes, invite your child to blend the water on low speed for 30 seconds; then, add 1 teaspoon of paper casting powder and blend for a full minute on high speed. The consistency should be comparable to that of apple sauce
  • Have your child pour about 1/3 of the mixture into the strainer to drain the excess water. Spread wet pulp evenly in the ceramic mold, making sure to overlap the outside edges of the mold just slightly.
  • Show your child how to compress the paper into the mold with a damp sponge, wringing out the sponge periodically to rid it of excess water. She should repeat this process 3-4 times and then carefully press the paper with a folded dish towel to absorb any remaining water.
  • Make sure she allows the mold to dry. You can dry the paper overnight in the mold or place the mold in an oven at about 125-150° F for 3 hours or so, until the paper is completely dry.
  • Have your child use the blade of a nail file or knife to loosen the edge of the paper and gently remove the ornament from the mold.
  • Using a needle and a thin cord or ribbon, create a hanger for the ornament. Thread the cord or ribbon through the top of the ornament, tying the ends at the top.
  • Plain white paper ornaments with gold thread make an extra special addition to your tree. Otherwise, use embellishments such as watercolor paints, ribbon, buttons, etc., to trim your ornaments as desired. Enjoy the holiday season and its accompanying crafts!

Ingredients
4 cups flour
1 cup salt
1 1/2 c. hot water
2 tsp. vegetable oil
1 Tbsp. lemon juice
Directions
Mix it all up till smooth. Form into any shape you want, maybe using foil as a frame. Bake at 200 degrees until done. Cover it with foil if it starts to brown.

Once the ornaments are formed, poke them with a bamboo skewer to make holes to hang them from. I decided to make my snowflakes into a garland, so they got poked twice, on opposite ends. Once you have the holes in, it is time to pop them in the oven. Essentially, you want to dry out all of the moisture in them, so they go in a 200 degree oven for 4-6 hours - you can even leave them in overnight. Once they are hardened, take them out and let them cool completely.

HOMEMADE CHRISTMAS ORNAMENTS

Homemade Christmas Ornaments image

I love to make my own Christmas ornaments and crafts ! I give some as gifts and keep some for decorating my multiple themed trees. Here are some examples from past years and some I plan on making this year. I will be adding to this "recipe" as I make them.

Number Of Ingredients 3

8 cup(s) love
6 dash(es) joy
3 tablespoon(s) creativity

Steps:

  • Freda made this beautiful Star Dishcloth. I would love to receive one of these for Christmas !
  • This is a new one for 2011 that me and my BF are working on. Way easy and adorable ! I have loads of old vintage buttons that were my Grandmothers. 1) Floral Wire 2) Buttons 3) Ribbon 4( Thread buttons onto wire, bend into a round wreath shape. Snip with wire cutters and twist ends to close, tie a ribbon to hide the "wire twist" and hang on tree or use on Christmas packages.
  • This is so easy, don't be fooled ! I bought (ordered) several off-white pillow covers, cut out tall triangles of scrap fabric to resemble Christmas trees then I used a heat bond product for fabric, you just iron these on, no sewing ! You can go back over the edges of the fabric with a back stitch or a sewing machine for a more "hand stitched" look. Then you just slip your regular throw pillow on and ta do instant Holiday cheer !
  • How adorable are these ! You could turn these little bottle caps into frig. magnets or Christmas tree ornaments. The design possibilities are endless....1) Use photo's as shown 2) Recycle Christmas cards and cut up to fit 3) Cut up fabric or ribbon to fit, you could even add some beads 4) Pretty scrapbook paper works great 5) You can buy magnets at any craft store or Walmart 6) Hot Glue gun ribbon to hang as ornaments
