Steps:
- Whisk together the half-and-half, brown sugar, cornstarch, salt and egg yolks in a medium saucepan. Heat, stirring, until thick, about 2 minutes. Remove from the heat and stir in the butter and vanilla. Let cool. Store covered.

- Melt butter.
- Add sugar and allow to brown.
- Gradually add water.
- Beat egg yolks.
- Add a small of measured milk and flour.
- Stir until smooth.
- Add rest of milk and salt. Mix.
- Pour this slowly into the sugar mix and cook until thick.
- Cool.
