This is my mother-in-law's recipe from when she lived in Brazil for 6 years. It may look like a little pancake, but it is a sweet treat. Serve broas when then have cooled completely.

1 ½ cups white sugar
1 cup cornmeal
1 cup all-purpose flour
½ teaspoon salt
2 eggs
1 cup milk, at room temperature
¼ cup melted butter

Steps:

  • Mix sugar, cornmeal, flour, and salt together in bowl until combined; add eggs.
  • Stir milk and melted butter in a bowl until smooth; stir into the cornmeal mixture until smooth, about 5 minutes.
  • Grease a griddle; place over high heat. Drop tablespoonfuls of the cornmeal mixture into the skillet; cook until golden brown, about 5 minutes each side.

1 cup fine cornflour
1 cup tapioca starch or 1 cup cornstarch
1 teaspoon baking powder
4 tablespoons sugar
5 tablespoons flaked coconut
1 egg
1/2 cup butter or 1/2 cup margarine

Steps:

  • Preheat oven to 350°F.
  • Mix flours, baking powder, and flaked coconut.
  • Beat butter or margarine, eggs, and sugar together.
  • Add flour mixture.
  • Knead with hands until smooth.
  • Make small balls, place on greased cookie sheet, and gently flatten with a fork.
  • Bake until golden.
