BECKY'S FABULOUS DOG AND PEOPLE SHAMPOO

Becky's Fabulous Dog and People Shampoo image

I wanted a recipe that would discourage the fleas and soothe my dog's itchy skin. The only recipes I could find online used icky things like dish soap, which will dry a dog's skin. I see this as a base idea for a dog (and people) shampoo. If you don't have some ingredients or think others would be better, switch it around. A few notes: Be sure to grind the oatmeal very well, otherwise you'll be picking out little pieces from your dog's coat. The turmeric is a very healthy, healing herb. However, it's also a bit of a dye. I didn't see this as a problem since both my dog and I have brownish blonde hair. Any lightening or reddening the turmeric did was a plus. But you may not like this. Both the essential oils are known to be good for the coat and bad for fleas. You may want another oil as well as or instead of for a different smell or different effects.

Time 10m

Yield 1 shampoo, 12 serving(s)

Number Of Ingredients 13

1 cup old fashioned oatmeal
1/2 cup dry milk
1/4 cup corn starch
1 teaspoon turmeric powder
1/4 cup baking soda
2 tablespoons food-grade diatomaceous earth
1/2 cup apple cider vinegar
10 drops eucalyptus oil
10 drops tea tree oil
1/4 cup coconut oil
1/4 cup olive oil
1 tablespoon raw honey
filtered water

Steps:

  • Put oat meal in a food processor and grind until very fine. If you do not have a food processor, use a coffee grinder or other means to grind it as finely as possible.
  • Add dry ingredients to powdered oatmeal: dry milk, corn starch, turmeric, baking soda, diatomaceous earth. Mix well.
  • Add wet ingredients (except for water): apple cider vinegar, eucalyptus oil, tea tree oil, coconut oil, olive oil, honey. Mix well.
  • Slowly add water until shampoo-like consistency. Start with 1/4 cup and add slowly. Test the consistency with your fingers as well as your eyes.
  • Use on dog or people hair. For flea control, you may want to leave on for five minutes before rinsing off. Rinse thoroughly.
  • Although none of the ingredients in this recipe need to be refrigerated, I do not know how their shelf life is when combined, so I refrigerate mine.

DRY ITCHY SKIN RELIEF FOR DOGS

Dry Itchy Skin Relief for Dogs image

I haven't tried this but this is suppose to help dogs with dry or itchy skin, even hot spots. I am putting this here for safe keeping and hope it helps our best friends. If this works for hot spots, then it is worth a million bucks. My baby gets them a couple of times a year and licks himself half to death. The recipe calls for original Listerine, zaar wouldn't let me put in as an ingredient. I have tried this and it works great for dry itchy skin. His dandruff disappeared.

HOMEMADE NO COLOR STRIP CLEANSING SHAMPOO

Homemade No Color Strip Cleansing Shampoo image

A former hairsylist turned me on to this secret for a cleansing shampoo for color-treated hair. Commercial cleansing shampoos are made to throughly cleanse your hair (ie remove all product build-up), but they also strip color. This homemade version helps to prevent stripping of color, but also throughly cleanses your hair. It is also much cheaper and can be made with products already in your home. I love it and use it once per week!

NATURAL DOG SHAMPOO - FLEA REMOVAL

Natural Dog Shampoo - Flea Removal image

My poor pooch had a couple of fleas on her this summer (never had this issue before) and I needed a way to bathe her and kill the fleas without causing skin reactions as she has so many allergies. I found this through the e-how website and IT WORKED! The fleas just floated in the water and died and best of all little Libby did not have any reactions at all to the process. Cooking time is actually the time to leave the solution on the dog.

Yield 1 quart, 1 serving(s)

Number Of Ingredients 3

1 cup liquid dish soap (I used Dawn for sensitive skin)
1 cup white vinegar
1 quart warm water

Steps:

  • Mix the three ingredients in a large bowl and then transfer to a leftover squeeze bottle (like an old shampoo bottle). Give it a little shake to make sure it is mixed.
  • Apply to your doggy just as you would normal shampoo. It is best if you can massage it into the fur and let sit for 5 minutes. My dog did not mind as long as I kept massaging the shampoo around.
  • Rinse your doggy thoroughly with warm water. Towel dry.

SHAM-POOCH DOG SHAMPOO

Sham-Pooch Dog Shampoo image

If you wash your dog(s) half as often as we do, then you still spend a fortune on dog shampoo. I found this recipe on a couple of different websites... I just tried it out on our dogs and it worked great (of course that's just my opinion, you'd have to ask the dogs for the definitive answer).
