Babka is a rich yeast bread, layered with chocolate, from Poland. If you would like to bump it up a notch, try it as French toast for a real treat in the morning or for dessert. Serve with raspberries or strawberries, if you wish!

½ cup milk
1 egg
1 teaspoon white sugar
½ teaspoon ground cinnamon
1 pinch salt
2 tablespoons butter
6 thick slices chocolate babka, about 3/4-inch thick
1 tablespoon confectioners' sugar

Steps:

  • In a shallow bowl, whisk together milk, egg, sugar, cinnamon, and salt.
  • Melt butter in a large skillet over low heat.
  • Dip each slice of babka into egg mixture, turning to coat each side. Place dipped babka slices into the hot skillet and cook until mixture begins to set and slices begin to brown, 3 to 4 minutes. Turn slices and cook on the other side until brown, 3 to 4 minutes, watching carefully to prevent burning.
  • Transfer to a serving plate and dust with confectioners' sugar.

1 loaf bread
3 extra large eggs
½ cup milk
½ teaspoon vanilla extract
1 cup white sugar
⅓ cup baking mix (such as Bisquick ®)
1 teaspoon ground cinnamon
3 tablespoons unsalted butter
1 cup powdered sugar
2 tablespoons milk, or more as needed
½ teaspoon vanilla extract

Steps:

  • Preheat the oven to 400 degrees F (200 degrees C). Lightly grease a baking sheet.
  • Slice bread into 1-inch thick slices, then cut each slice into thirds, making sticks.
  • Beat eggs, milk, and vanilla extract together in a shallow bowl.
  • Mix sugar, baking mix, and cinnamon together on a shallow plate.
  • Dip sticks quickly into egg mixture on all sides. Don't make them too wet. Coat with cinnamon and sugar mixture. Place on the prepared baking sheet.
  • Bake in the preheated oven until golden and crispy, turning once halfway through cooking, 15 to 20 minutes total.

¼ teaspoon ground cinnamon
¼ teaspoon ground nutmeg
4 stale bagels, split
1 tablespoon powdered sugar, or to taste

Steps:

  • Beat milk, eggs, vanilla extract, cinnamon, and nutmeg together in a large, flat container.
  • Place bagels, insides-down, into the egg mixture. Let sit for 30 minutes.
