ASIAN MARINATED FLANK STEAK

Asian Marinated Flank Steak image

I originally got the idea for this out of Sunset Magazine, and have tweaked it to suit my family and friends. It makes a great OAMC entree for the grill, or to take camping. I've used this on chicken and salmon as well as beef, just reducing the marinating time appropriately. Don't use ground (dry) ginger in this- the flavor is not the same.

Marinating is an essence in cooking many Asian dishes. It not only tenderizes the meat but also makes the flavors deeper and more prominent. When it comes to Asian marinated flank steak recipes, you are in for a treat. Flank steak is a versatile cut of meat that can be used in a variety of dishes. It’s a lean cut of meat, and when marinated with Asian flavors, it gives a perfect combination of succulent and flavorful meat. In this article, we will provide you with valuable tips to make the perfect Asian marinated flank steak recipe.

Tip 1: Prepare Your Flank Steak Correctly

The first and most important step in making any steak, irrespective of the recipe, is preparing the steak correctly. Flank steak is a tough cut of meat and requires some preparation before it is ready for marinating. Start by trimming the fat from the meat as much as possible. Use a sharp knife to remove the outer layer of the steak if there is any silver skin on it. Do this by gently sliding your knife under the silver skin and cutting it away. The silver skin is a tough connective tissue that can make the meat hard to chew. Once you have removed the silver skin, score the steak by making shallow diagonal cuts across the surface on both sides with a sharp knife. This will not only help to tenderize the steak but will allow the marinade to penetrate the meat better. Finally, place the steak in a resealable plastic bag, removing any excess air, and store it in the refrigerator until you are ready to marinate it.

Tip 2: Choose The Right Marinade

The marinade is the most crucial element when it comes to making an Asian marinated flank steak recipe. There are several variations of marinades that you can use, but the key is choosing the right one for your taste preferences. For instance, if you are looking for a sweet and sour flavor, you can use a marinade that combines soy sauce, honey, and rice vinegar. On the other hand, if you want a more robust flavor profile, you can use a marinade that combines soy sauce, garlic, ginger, and brown sugar. Always make sure that your marinade has enough acid in it to help tenderize the steak. You can use citrus fruits, vinegar, or wine as the acid component in your marinade.

Tip 3: Marinate for The Right Amount of Time

The duration of the marinating process is critical when it comes to making Asian marinated flank steak recipes. Marinating for too long or too little can significantly impact the flavor and texture of your meat. Marinate your flank steak for at least 30 minutes, but not more than 12 hours. The length of time will depend on the thickness of your steak. If the steak is too thin, you can marinate it for a shorter time. When marinating, make sure that the meat is fully covered in the marinade. You can use a resealable plastic bag, a covered container, or a shallow dish to marinate your steak. Turn the steakover occasionally, so that it is fully coated with the marinade.

Tip 4: Bring Steak to Room Temperature

Before you start cooking your flank steak, it's important you allow it to come to room temperature. This step ensures that your steak cooks evenly, and you get the desired doneness. Leave your meat to sit outside the fridge for about an hour or so.

Tip 5: The Perfect Cooking Technique

To cook your Asian marinated flank steak, you can use either a grill or a stovetop. Whichever method you choose, makesure you heat it up to the right temperature before placing your steak on it. For the stove, heat up the pan on medium-high. Set the grill to a medium-high heat. When cooking your steak, remove any excess marinade from the surface using a paper towel. If you are using a grill, place the steak on the grill, and cook it for around five minutes on each side. You can also cook it in a pan for the same duration. However, it's vital to remember that different thicknesses call for different cooking times. Once the steak is done, leave it to rest for about five minutes before slicing it into thin strips. This resting period ensures that the juices redistributed into the meat.

Tip 6: Pair Your Asian Marinated Flank Steak with The Right Sides

When it comes to pairing your Asian marinated flank steak, you can never go wrong with rice. However, a little creativity can go a long way by providing your guests with several side dish options to choose from. Vegetables such as steamed broccoli or bok choy, noodles, and spring rolls are just some of the best sides you can consider. Make sure you choose sides that complement the flavors of the steak.

Conclusion

Asian marinated flank steak is a delicacy that you can quickly and easily prepare at home. The preparation process and cooking method are straightforward. However, to get the perfect flavor and texture, you must follow the tips above. Remember to prepare your steak correctly, choose the right marinade, ensure the right marinating time, bring your steak to room temperature, cook it correctly, and pair it with the right sides. With these tips, you are guaranteed a perfect and delicious Asian marinated flank steak.
