Marinade Done Right...Asian Flank Steak image

My Asian Style Grilled and Marinated Flank Steak is full of flavor, texture and that mmmmmm savory umami balance on your palate that makes you beg for more and more.

Categories     Steak

Number Of Ingredients 11

3 pounds flank steak
1/4 cup vegetable oil or peanut oil
1/2 cup LOW sodium soy sauce (I always use Kikkoman)
1/2 cup balsamic vinegar
1/4 cup teriyaki sauce
1/4 cup honey
juice of 1 lime
a few squirts of siracha (depending on how spicy you like it)
Thumb sized piece of ginger (minced on a microplaner)
5 garlic cloves minced on a micro planer.
4 scallions sliced thinly

Steps:

  • Combine soy sauce, balsamic vinegar (this is what gives that tangy, savory flavor) honey, teriyaki sauce, ginger, lime, garlic, a few squirts of siracha, vegetable oil and scallions into a bowl and mix to combine all the flavors.
  • Then throw all the ingredients in a zip lock bag along with the steak. Shake, shake, shake. Make sure it's all covered.
  • Place in the fridge for at least an hour and up to 24 hours.
  • If you live in the not so warm parts...like me... you can cheat a bit. Take a large oven proof frying pan and place it into a 500-degree oven for about 10 minutes. Or you can place it in there as the oven preheats.
  • Remove your steak out of the bag and place it on a paper towel, dabbing the moisture off of the steak.
  • Once the pan is heated, place the steak directly onto the pan. You will see it shrink up immediately from the high heat. Close the oven and allow to cook for 5 minutes then flip it and cook it for 2 minutes.
  • For me, this is the ultimate way to sear a steak nicely without clouding my house up with smoke.
  • Place the steak on a sheet pan and cover with foil. Let the meat rest for 10 minutes.
  • Slice into it on a bias, against the grain, as we previously discussed.
  • Sprinkle with scallions and grab some chop sticks! Dinner is served.

Time 4h59m

Yield 4

Number Of Ingredients 10

½ cup low-sodium soy sauce
⅓ cup vegetable oil
⅓ cup brown sugar
1 tablespoon minced ginger
½ teaspoon garlic powder
2 pounds flank steak
1 (10 ounce) package dried Japanese udon noodles
6 ounces snow peas
1 cup broccoli florets
1 tablespoon mirin (Japanese sweet wine)

Steps:

  • Whisk soy sauce, vegetable oil, brown sugar, ginger, and garlic powder together in a large bowl. Pierce flank steak several times with a large fork. Place in the bowl and cover with plastic wrap. Let marinate in the refrigerator, at least 4 hours and up to overnight.
  • Bring a large pot of salted water to a boil. Cook udon noodles in boiling water, stirring occasionally, until tender yet firm to the bite, 13 to 14 minutes. Drain.
  • Heat a large skillet over high heat. Remove steak from marinade and cook until well-browned, about 2 minutes per side. Reserve marinade.
  • Preheat grill for medium heat and lightly oil the grate. Grill steak, basting with half of the reserved marinade, until internal temperature reaches 140 degrees F (60 degrees C) for medium or 150 degrees F (65 degrees C) for medium-well, at least 10 minutes per side. Slice steak thinly against the grain.
  • Combine remaining marinade, snow peas, broccoli florets, and mirin in the skillet. Cook and stir over medium-high heat until snow peas are tender, about 2 minutes. Add drained noodles; mix well to combine.
  • Divide noodle mixture among large bowls. Top with steak slices.

Provided by Alvin Zhou

Categories     Dinner

Yield 2 servings

Number Of Ingredients 13

1 ½ lb ribeye steak, or any other well-marbled, tender cut
1 onion, 1/2 roughly chopped and 1/2 thinly sliced
3 cloves garlic cloves
½ pear, peeled and roughly chopped
3 spring onions, 1 cut into pieces and 2 sliced into 1/4-inch rounds
3 tablespoons brown sugar
1 teaspoon black pepper

1 tablespoon canola oil
1 teaspoon sesame seed, for serving
2 cups cooked rice, for serving
Banchan (Korean side dishes), for serving (optional)

Steps:

  • Slice the beef as thinly as you can, then set aside in a large bowl. Using frozen or cold beef will make the slicing easier.

  • Pour the marinade over the beef, add the thinly sliced onion, then mix to coat evenly. Cover with plastic wrap and marinate in the fridge for at least 30 minutes, or overnight.

  • Serve with rice and side dishes.
  • Enjoy!

PERFECT SOY-GRILLED STEAK

Perfect Soy-Grilled Steak image

You may think you don't have the time to marinate meat before grilling it, but it's time-consuming only if you think a marinade has to tenderize. As far as I'm concerned, there are only two goals in marinating: to add flavor and to promote browning and crispness. Neither of these requires long soaking, although dunking the meat while the grill heats contributes to a slightly greater penetration of flavor. This marinade of soy sauce, ginger, garlic, honey and lime is ideal for steak, but it works beautifully with any tender meats like burgers, boneless chicken, tuna and swordfish, all of which can be turned in the sauce before putting them on the grill. Longer-cooking meats, like bone-in chicken, should be cooked within 10 minutes of doneness before basting with the sauce.

Time 30m

Yield 4 servings

Number Of Ingredients 7

1/4 cup soy sauce
1 teaspoon peeled and minced ginger
1/2 teaspoon peeled and minced garlic
1 tablespoon honey, molasses or hoisin sauce
Freshly ground black pepper to taste
Juice of 1/2 lime
1 16- to 24-ounce boneless steak (rib-eye, skirt or strip), or one 24- to 32-ounce bone-in steak (rib-eye or T-bone)

Steps:

  • Start a charcoal or wood fire or heat a gas grill; the fire should be hot and the rack no more than 4 inches from the heat source. Mix together the first 6 ingredients; taste and add more of anything you like. Turn the steak in the sauce once or twice, then let sit in the sauce until the grill is hot.
  • Turn the steak one more time, then place on the grill; spoon any remaining sauce over it. For rare meat, grill about 3 minutes a side for steaks less than an inch thick. For larger or more done steak, increase the time slightly.

With a variety of different ingredients and cooking methods, there are endless possibilities for creating an Asian-inspired barbequed steak dish.

Ingredients

There are several key ingredients that are commonly used in Asian barbequed steak recipes. Soy sauce, garlic, ginger, sesame oil, and rice vinegar are all commonly used to add flavor to the marinade or sauce. Some recipes may also include hoisin sauce, oyster sauce, or chili paste for added complexity. Additionally, many Asian barbequed steak recipes call for thinly sliced scallions or cilantro as a garnish.

Cooking Methods

There are several different cooking methods that can be used when preparing Asian barbequed steak. Grilling is a popular choice, as it allows the steak to develop a flavorful char and adds smokiness to the dish. However, pan searing or broiling in the oven are also effective methods for cooking steak. It is important to marinate the steak for at least a few hours before cooking in order to infuse it with flavor and ensure that it stays tender.

Types of Steak

While any type of steak can be used in an Asian barbequed steak recipe, certain cuts work particularly well. Flank steak, skirt steak, and sirloin steak are all lean cuts that lend themselves well to marinating and grilling. Ribeye steak and filet mignon are more tender cuts that can also be used, but may require a different cooking method in order to achieve the desired texture.

Regional Variations

Asian barbequed steak recipes can vary depending on the region they are from. Japanese teriyaki steak is a popular example, which involves marinating the steak in a sweet and savory sauce made with soy sauce, brown sugar, and sake. Korean bulgogi is another popular variation, which involves marinating thinly sliced beef in a mixture of soy sauce, sugar, sesame oil, and garlic before grilling or pan-frying.

Vegetables such as bok choy, snow peas, or shiitake mushrooms can also be incorporated into the dish. Additionally, Asian-inspired dipping sauces such as soy sauce, sake, or wasabi are often served on the side.

Conclusion

Asian barbequed steak recipes are a delicious way to enjoy steak with a unique twist. Whether you are grilling up a batch of Japanese teriyaki steak or pan-frying a Korean bulgogi, there are endless opportunities to experiment and create your own unique spin on this classic dish.
Barbequing is a famous cooking method appreciated all around the world. Barbequed meats are generally juicy, tender, and packed with flavor, making them perfect for any gathering or special occasion. Among the different barbequed meat recipes, Asian barbequed steak recipes have been gaining popularity due to their unique fusion of flavor, culture, and tradition. Preparing a perfect Asian barbequed steak requires both skill and patience, and in this article, we will discuss some useful tips to help you make the perfect Asian barbequed steak for your next barbeque party.

Tip 1: Choose the right cut of steak

The first and most crucial step in making the perfect Asian barbequed steak is selecting the right cut of meat. For an incredibly tender and juicy steak, it's important to choose a quality cut with a good marbling of fat running through the meat. Such cuts include ribeye, top sirloin, or skirt steak. The marbling of fat will add flavor and tenderness to the steak and ensure a juicy steak after cooking. Additionally, ensure that the steak is thick enough to hold its shape and not to overcook easily.

Tip 2: Marinate the steak

Marinating is a crucial step in creating the desired flavor in Asian barbequed steak recipes. Before cooking, the steak should be marinated in a marinade mixture that brings out the flavors of the steak. Asian steak marinades often contain soy sauce, garlic, ginger, honey, and sesame oil, which complement the natural flavors of the steak. Ensure that the steak is left to soak in the marinade for at least two hours or overnight to help the flavors absorb and infuse the steak.

Tip 3: Use the right cooking technique

Asian barbequed steak requires precise cooking methods to ensure that the steak is cooked to perfection while still retaining its desired tenderness and flavor. Grilling and pan-frying are the two most common cooking methods for Asian barbequed steak recipes. Grilling is preferred since it provides a smoky flavor, while pan-frying is great when working with thinner cuts of steak. When grilling, ensure that the grill has been preheated to high temperatures, and the steak should be placed on the grill and grilled for about six to eight minutes on each side for medium-rare to medium doneness. Alternatively, pan-frying requires attention to ensure the steak is seared evenly on all sides and doesn't overcook quickly.

Tip 4: Rest the Steak Before Cutting

After grilling or frying the steak, it's still recommended to let it rest for a while before cutting. This allows for the juices in the steak to spread evenly and retain their flavor, ensuring juicy and tender steak. You can remove the steak from the heat and place it on a cutting board for about five to ten minutes, covered with aluminum foil. This will help retain the heat and distribute the juices throughout the steak.

Tip 5: Ensure Proper Seasoning

Proper seasoning is critical when preparing a delicious Asian barbequed steak. After cooking and letting the steak rest, it's important to season the steak lightly to ensure that the flavors are well balanced. This can be done by sprinkling some salt and black pepper over the steak, or you can use some additional Asian-inspired spices such as five-spice powder or chili flakes that complement the dish's flavor.

Tip 6: Serve with sides

Asian barbequed steak is often served with delicious and healthy sides to bring out the best of the steak flavor. Some popular sides include vegetables such as bok choy, broccoli or green beans stir-fry, or salad with tangy vinaigrette. Additionally, you can also serve the steak with fried rice, noodles, or mashed potatoes to complement the meal.

Conclusion

In conclusion, preparing the perfect Asian barbequed steak involves selecting the right cut of meat, marinating the steak, using the right cooking technique, letting the steak rest before cutting, ensuring proper seasoning, and serving with delicious sides. By following these tips, you can ensure that your guests will love your Asian barbequed steak recipe. Additionally, feel free to experiment with different flavors and ingredients to create a unique recipe that will be a hit at your next barbecue party.
