Arugula, watermelon, and feta salad is a popular summertime dish known for its refreshing taste and vibrant colors. The combination of peppery arugula, juicy watermelon, and salty feta cheese makes for a perfect balance of flavors, making it a hit among foodies and health enthusiasts alike. In this article, we will provide valuable tips on how to make the perfect arugula, watermelon, and feta salad, ensuring that it turns out delicious every time.

Choosing the Ingredients

The key to making a great arugula, watermelon, and feta salad is choosing the right ingredients. Here are some tips to keep in mind when selecting your ingredients:
Arugula
Choose fresh, bright green arugula with crisp leaves. Avoid arugula that looks wilted, slimy, or has yellowing leaves, as it may be past its prime.
Watermelon
Select a ripe, sweet watermelon that's heavy for its size. The skin should be firm and evenly shaped without bruises or dents. Ripe watermelons should also have a hollow sound when tapped.
Feta Cheese
When buying feta cheese, opt for high-quality feta that's creamy, tangy, and salty. Avoid feta that's dry, crumbly, or tasteless as it may ruin the dish's flavor.

Cutting the Watermelon

Once you've picked a ripe watermelon, cutting it becomes the next task. Here's how to do it correctly:
Cut off both ends
Cut off both ends of the watermelon so that it can stand upright without wobbling.
Cut off the rind
Using a sharp knife, slice off the watermelon's rind, making sure to cut as thinly as possible.
Cut the flesh
Now, cut the watermelon flesh into even-sized cubes or triangles, depending on your preference. Make sure to remove any seeds.

Assembling the Salad

Assembling the arugula, watermelon, and feta salad is the fun part. Here are some tips to make it more enjoyable:
Don't overdo the arugula
Arugula has a strong, peppery taste, so using just the right amount is essential to achieve the desired flavor balance. Too much arugula can overpower the sweetness of the watermelon, while too little can make the salad taste bland.
Arrange the ingredients strategically
When arranging the ingredients, start with the arugula as the base and create a bed for the watermelon cubes or triangles on top. Next, crumble the feta cheese over the watermelon. Lastly, sprinkle some freshly chopped mint or basil leaves over the salad to add some freshness.
Season the salad just right
The salad's seasoning is crucial to bring out the flavors fully. A simple dressing of olive oil and balsamic vinegar complements the sweetness of the watermelon and the tanginess of the feta cheese. However, you may also opt to use a honey-lemon vinaigrette or a citrus-based dressing to add more depth of flavor to the salad.

Serving and Storing the Salad

To serve the arugula, watermelon, and feta salad, toss it lightly to ensure that the dressing is evenly distributed throughout the ingredients. Divide the salad among serving plates, or serve it in a large bowl to share. You may also add some toasted pine nuts or almonds to give the salad some crunch. When storing the salad, it's best to keep the dressing separate from the other ingredients, to prevent them from turning soggy. Place the arugula, watermelon, and feta cheese in an airtight container and keep it in the refrigerator for up to two days. When ready to serve, toss the ingredients with the dressing and add mint or basil leaves for added freshness.

Conclusion

Making the perfect arugula, watermelon, and feta salad requires choosing the right ingredients, cutting the watermelon correctly, assembling the salad strategically, and seasoning it just right. With these valuable tips, you can create a delicious and refreshing dish that's perfect for any summer occasion. Whether you're hosting a barbecue or simply want a healthy lunch option, this salad is sure to impress anyone who tries it.
