Valuable Tips for Making Arugula Salad with Caramelized Onions, Goat Cheese, and Candied Walnuts

If you're looking for a simple yet delicious salad recipe, arugula salad with caramelized onions, goat cheese, and candied walnuts is an excellent choice. This salad is perfect for a light lunch or as a side dish. Here are some valuable tips for making this recipe that will help you make the best arugula salad with caramelized onions, goat cheese, and candied walnuts.

1. Choose Fresh Arugula

The key to making a great arugula salad is to use fresh arugula. Make sure to buy arugula that is bright green with firm, crisp leaves. Avoid arugula with yellow or brown leaves, which indicates that it is past its prime. You can also substitute arugula with other greens such as spinach, kale, or mixed greens.

2. Caramelize Onions Until Golden Brown

Caramelized onions are the perfect addition to this salad, as they add a sweet and savory flavor. To caramelize onions, slice them thinly and sauté them in a pan with a bit of olive oil over low heat until they turn golden brown. Make sure to stir occasionally to prevent burning. This process can take up to 30 minutes, but it's worth it for the delicious flavor it adds to the salad.

3. Use High-Quality Goat Cheese

Goat cheese is a staple in many salad recipes, and it adds a tangy, creamy texture to this arugula salad. Choose a high-quality goat cheese that's soft and creamy, but not too pungent. You can also substitute goat cheese with feta cheese, blue cheese, or other crumbly cheeses.

4. Crunchy Candied Walnuts

Candied walnuts are a great addition to this arugula salad, as they add a crunchy texture and delicious sweetness. To make candied walnuts, toss them in a pan with a bit of brown sugar and butter over medium heat until they are coated with sugar and lightly toasted. Make sure to stir occasionally to prevent burning. You can also substitute candied walnuts with other nuts such as almonds, pecans, or hazelnuts.

5. Dress with Balsamic Vinegar Dressing

The perfect dressing for this arugula salad is a balsamic vinegar dressing, which adds a tangy sweetness that complements the flavors of the arugula, caramelized onions, and goat cheese. To make a balsamic vinegar dressing, whisk together balsamic vinegar, olive oil, Dijon mustard, honey, salt, and black pepper in a bowl. You can also use other dressings such as honey mustard, raspberry vinaigrette, or lemon vinaigrette.

6. Add Flavorful Extras

To make this arugula salad even more flavorful, you can add extras such as sliced apples, dried cranberries, roasted beets, or sliced pears. These additions will add more sweetness, tartness, or earthy flavors to the salad. Make sure to choose extras that complement the flavors of the main ingredients.

7. Serve Immediately

This arugula salad is best served immediately after it's made, as the arugula leaves can wilt quickly when coated with dressing. Make sure to toss the salad with dressing just before serving to prevent the arugula from getting soggy. You can also serve the dressing on the side and let your guests dress their own salad.

8. Store Leftovers Separately

If you have leftovers of this arugula salad, make sure to store them separately to prevent the arugula from wilting and the candied walnuts from getting soggy. Store the arugula, caramelized onions, and goat cheese in one container and the candied walnuts and dressing in separate containers. When you're ready to eat leftovers, toss everything together just before serving.

Conclusion

Arugula salad with caramelized onions, goat cheese, and candied walnuts is a delicious and easy-to-make salad that's perfect for any occasion. The key to making a great arugula salad is to use fresh arugula, caramelize onions until golden brown, use high-quality goat cheese, make crunchy candied walnuts, dress with balsamic vinegar dressing, add flavorful extras, serve immediately, and store leftovers separately.
