THE BEST SPINACH ARTICHOKE DIP

The Best Spinach Artichoke Dip image

This is our best version of the classic party dip. It's savory and creamy with a slight tang from sour cream and Parmesan -- so hard to resist. We like to use frozen whole leaf spinach and chop it ourselves for more control over the finished texture of the dish.

Time 40m

Yield 6 to 10 servings

Number Of Ingredients 11

Nonstick cooking spray
8 ounces cream cheese, at room temperature
1/2 cup sour cream
1/4 cup mayonnaise
1 clove garlic, grated
One 10-ounce box frozen leaf spinach, thawed, drained, squeezed dry and coarsely chopped (see Cook's Note)
One 14-ounce can artichoke hearts, drained well and coarsely chopped
1/2 cup shredded whole-milk mozzarella
3/4 cup freshly grated Parmesan
Kosher salt and freshly ground black pepper
Crackers, chips or toasted bread, for serving

Steps:

  • Position a rack in the upper third of the oven and preheat to 350 degrees F. Spray a 1-quart baking dish with nonstick cooking spray.
  • Put the cream cheese, sour cream, mayonnaise and garlic in a large bowl. Mix vigorously until combined and smooth. (If you prefer, you can use a stand mixer fitted with the paddle attachment.) Add the spinach to the cream cheese mixture, breaking it up as you add it. Add the artichokes, mozzarella and 1/2 cup of the Parmesan, mixing to combine. Season with salt and pepper. Transfer the mixture to the prepared baking dish and top with the remaining 1/4 cup Parmesan.
  • Bake until the dip begins to bubble, 20 to 25 minutes. Turn the oven to broil and continue to cook, keeping an eye on it so it doesn't burn, until the top is golden brown, about 5 minutes. Serve warm with crackers, chips or toasted bread.

1 teaspoon ground cumin
3 to 4 pita breads
2 tablespoons extra-virgin olive oil
1/2 teaspoon kosher salt

5 strips thick-cut bacon
1 teaspoon extra-virgin olive oil, optional
2 shallots, chopped
2 cloves garlic, minced
One 8-ounce bag frozen artichokes, thawed

1/4 cup mayonnaise
1/4 cup fresh lemon juice (from 1 large lemon)

Valuable Tips When Making Artichoke Surprise Dip Recipes

Artichoke dip is a classic appetizer that can be whipped up quickly with just a few ingredients. With the addition of some surprise ingredients, the dip can take on a whole new level of flavor. Here are some valuable tips to take your artichoke dip to the next level.
1. Use fresh artichokes
If possible, use fresh artichokes instead of canned. Fresh artichokes have a better flavor and texture, and they pair well with the other ingredients in the dip. Canned artichokes can be used in a pinch, but fresh is best.
2. Drain and chop the artichokes well
Whether you're using canned or fresh artichokes, it's important to drain them well and chop them finely. This helps to ensure that the dip is not too watery and that the artichokes are evenly distributed throughout the dip.
3. Add some surprises
To take your artichoke dip to the next level, add some surprise ingredients. Some popular additions include:
  • Spinach
  • Sun-dried tomatoes
  • Feta cheese
  • Caramelized onions
  • Roasted garlic
These ingredients can be added in small amounts to complement the artichoke flavor, or they can be used in larger amounts to create a different type of dip altogether.
4. Use Greek yogurt or sour cream
Instead of using mayonnaise as the base of the dip, use Greek yogurt or sour cream. These can add a tangy flavor and a creamier texture to the dip. Plus, they are healthier options than mayonnaise.
5. Use a variety of cheeses
Cheese is an essential ingredient in artichoke dip, but using just one type of cheese can be boring. Mix it up by using a variety of cheeses, such as:
  • Cheddar
  • Swiss
  • Monterey Jack
  • Parmesan
This will add depth and complexity to the flavor of the dip.
6. Add some spice
To give your artichoke dip a little kick, add some spice. This can be done with the addition of jalapenos, cayenne pepper, or even a hot sauce like Tabasco. Start with a small amount and taste as you go to make sure the heat level is to your liking.
7. Use a food processor
To make sure all of the ingredients are well combined and evenly distributed, use a food processor. This will give the dip a smoother texture and prevent any large chunks of artichoke or cheese from overwhelming the dip.
8. Serve with a variety of dippers
Artichoke dip is typically served with tortilla chips, but there are many other options. Try serving it with pita chips, crackers, baguette slices, or vegetable sticks like celery or carrots. This will add some variety and allow guests to tailor their dip experience to their liking.
9. Bake it
Baking your artichoke dip can give it a crispy, golden crust on top that adds a delicious texture to the dip. To do this, bake the dip in a baking dish at 350 degrees F for 20-30 minutes, or until the top is golden brown and the dip is heated through.
10. Make it ahead of time
Artichoke dip can be made ahead of time and stored in the refrigerator until ready to serve. This makes it a great option for parties and gatherings where you want to spend less time in the kitchen and more time enjoying your guests. Simply reheat the dip in the microwave or in the oven before serving. Making artichoke dip is easy, but adding some surprise ingredients and following these valuable tips can take your dip from ordinary to extraordinary. Try these tips for your next party or gathering and impress your guests with your delicious dip skills.
