¾ cup brown sugar
⅓ cup all-purpose flour
1 ½ teaspoons ground cinnamon
1 cup brown sugar
1 cup all-purpose flour
2 teaspoons ground cinnamon
¼ teaspoon kosher salt
½ cup unsalted butter, softened
3 ½ cups all-purpose flour
1 tablespoon baking powder
¼ teaspoon kosher salt
1 ½ cups white sugar
1 cup unsalted butter, softened
3 large eggs
¾ cup milk
1 (8 ounce) container sour cream
2 teaspoons vanilla extract

Steps:

  • Preheat the oven to 350 degrees F (175 degrees C). Lightly grease a 9x13-inch baking dish; set aside.
  • Prepare cinnamon layer by stirring brown sugar, flour, and cinnamon together in a small bowl until well combined; set aside.
  • Prepare streusel topping by combining brown sugar, flour, cinnamon, and salt in a small bowl. Add butter and stir with a fork until mixture is crumbly; set aside.
  • Prepare cake by whisking together flour, baking powder, and salt in a medium bowl.
  • Beat sugar and butter in a stand mixer fitted with the paddle attachment on medium speed until fluffy, about 3 minutes. Scrape the sides of the bowl, then turn the mixer on low speed and beat in eggs until well blended. Gradually mix in flour mixture and milk. Add sour cream and vanilla and beat for 30 seconds.
  • Pour 1/2 of the batter into the prepared baking dish. Sprinkle the cinnamon layer over the batter, then pour the remaining batter over top. Spread streusel topping evenly over the cake, pressing very lightly so it adheres to the batter.
  • Bake in the preheated oven until a toothpick inserted in the center comes out clean, 40 to 50 minutes. Remove from the oven and let cool completely before serving, about 30 minutes.

Valuable Tips When Making Arlene’s Caramel Streusel Coffee Cake Recipes

Arlene’s caramel streusel coffee cake is undoubtedly a classic recipe that has stood the test of time. This recipe is perfect for breakfast or brunch and is sure to impress your guests with its moist texture, rich flavor, and irresistible aroma. If you’re planning to make Arlene’s caramel streusel coffee cake recipe at home, here are some valuable tips that can help you get it right:
Tip #1: Use the Right Ingredients
When it comes to making Arlene’s caramel streusel coffee cake, the ingredients you use can make all the difference. You want to make sure you are using high-quality ingredients because this will affect the taste and texture of your cake. For example, use real butter instead of margarine, and use fresh eggs instead of ones that have been sitting in your fridge for a while. It’s also essential to use good-quality vanilla extract, baking powder, and all-purpose flour.

Ingredients List

  • All-purpose flour
  • Baking powder
  • Butter
  • Granulated sugar
  • Eggs
  • Milk
  • Vanilla extract
  • Brown sugar
  • Cinnamon
  • Chopped nuts
Tip #2: Follow the Recipe Exactly
One of the most common mistakes that people make when making Arlene’s caramel streusel coffee cake is not following the recipe exactly. This recipe has been tested and perfected, so it’s essential to stick to the exact measurements and instructions. When you’re baking, it can be tempting to adjust ingredients to make the recipe your own. However, it’s best to avoid making changes until you’ve tried the original recipe first.
Tip #3: Don't Overmix the Batter
When making coffee cake, it’s important not to overmix the batter. Overmixing can cause the cake to become dense and heavy, making it less enjoyable to eat. When mixing the ingredients, use a light hand and stir until all the ingredients are just combined. Don’t worry if there are a few lumps in the batter. These will disappear once the cake is baked.
Tip #4: Use the Correct Baking Pan
Using the correct baking pan is crucial when making Arlene’s caramel streusel coffee cake. If you use a pan that is too small or too large, it can affect how the cake bakes, resulting in an uneven texture. For this recipe, a standard 9-inch round cake pan works best. Make sure the pan is greased and floured before adding the batter to prevent it from sticking.
Tip #5: Let the Cake Cool Completely
Once the coffee cake is removed from the oven, it’s essential to let it cool completely before adding the caramel drizzle. If you add the caramel while the cake is still warm, it will melt, and the texture will become runny. Let the cake cool on a wire rack for at least 30 minutes before adding the caramel drizzle. This will ensure the cake has a chance to set, making it easier to slice and serve.
Tip #6: Add Your Own Twist
While it’s important to follow the recipe exactly, there’s no harm in adding your own twist to the recipe. For example, you could add your favorite nuts or dried fruits to the batter for added texture and flavor. You could also experiment with different types of caramel drizzles. For a salted caramel flavor, add a pinch of sea salt to the caramel sauce. Alternatively, you could add a touch of cinnamon to the caramel drizzle to give the cake a warm, spicy flavor.
Tip #7: Store Leftovers Properly
If you have any leftovers, it’s essential to store them properly to keep the coffee cake fresh. Cover the cake with plastic wrap or foil and store it in the fridge for up to three days. Alternatively, you could freeze the coffee cake for up to two months. Let the cake thaw in the fridge overnight before reheating it in the oven at 350°F for 10-15 minutes.
Conclusion
Making Arlene’s caramel streusel coffee cake is a delightful experience that yields a moist, flavorful, and irresistible cake. Remember to use high-quality ingredients, follow the recipe exactly, and not overmix the batter. Use the correct baking pan, let the cake cool before adding the caramel drizzle, and store leftovers properly. And don’t be afraid to add your own twist to the recipe for added flavor and texture. By following these valuable tips, you can create a delicious coffee cake that will keep your guests coming back for more.
