Time 8h35m

Yield 4

Number Of Ingredients 8

1 (16 ounce) package extra firm tofu
3 tablespoons olive oil
1 egg white
1 tablespoon barbeque sauce
1 cup all-purpose flour
1 teaspoon salt
½ teaspoon pepper
1 cup barbeque sauce

Steps:

  • Drain tofu, and slice into strips. Place in a plastic bag or container, and freeze overnight. This will give the tofu a meatier texture. Thaw tofu strips, and blot with paper towels to dry.
  • Heat olive oil in a large skillet over medium heat. In a small bowl, whisk together the egg white and 1 tablespoon of barbeque sauce. Combine the flour, salt, and pepper in a separate bowl. Dip the tofu slices into the egg mixture, then into the flour mixture, shaking off excess flour. Fry in the hot oil for about 1 minute on each side, until golden brown. Just fry enough at one time so they are not crowded. Remove from the oil to paper towels to drain and cool.
  • Preheat the oven's broiler. Brush tofu slices with additional barbeque sauce, and allow to marinate while the broiler heats up. Arrange them on a broiler pan, or wire rack set over a cookie sheet for best results.
  • Position the oven rack about 6 inches from the heat source. Broil for 5 minutes on each side, or until browned and crisp, watching closely so as not to burn them. Serve warm with the remaining barbeque sauce for dipping.

EASY SPICY TOFU WITH APRICOT-GINGER DIPPING SAUCE

Easy Spicy Tofu with Apricot-Ginger Dipping Sauce image

This recipe for baked tofu is tossed in cornstarch and ground chipotle chile pepper to create a spicy crust on the outside. While the tofu bakes, a simple sweet and spicy sauce of ginger and apricot is made to help compliment the heat. Serve it as an appetizer or as a quick healthy lunch.

Provided by Chef Mo

Time 1h5m

Yield 2

Number Of Ingredients 9

1 (16 ounce) package extra firm tofu
2 tablespoons sesame oil
2 tablespoons cornstarch
1 ½ teaspoons ground dried chipotle pepper
½ cup apricot preserves
2 tablespoons vegetable broth
1 tablespoon ginger paste
1 clove garlic, chopped
⅛ teaspoon crushed red pepper

Steps:

  • Slice tofu into thirds lengthwise so you have 3 even slabs. Stack the slabs on top of each other and slice through them lengthwise to make 3 even columns, then slice across to make 5 even rows.
  • Lay tofu evenly on a plate lined with a couple of sheets of paper towels. Layer more paper towel on top of the tofu and place another plate on top of the stack. Press out as much water as possible and let sit for at least 30 minutes.
  • Preheat the oven to 400 degrees F (200 degrees C). Line a baking sheet with parchment paper.
  • Transfer pressed tofu to a mixing bowl and drizzle with sesame oil. Lightly toss to combine. Sprinkle with cornstarch and ground chipotle chile pepper. Toss tofu until it is evenly coated with cornstarch and arrange in one layer on the prepared baking sheet.
  • Bake tofu in the preheated oven for 10 minutes. Flip and continue baking until tofu is crisp, about 10 minutes more. Transfer tofu to a wire rack using a spatula; cool.
  • While tofu bakes, combine apricot preserves, vegetable broth, ginger paste, garlic, and red pepper in a small saucepan over low heat. Heat and stir sauce until warmed and well combined, about 5 minutes. Remove from heat. Serve tofu with warm dipping sauce.

BARBECUED TOFU WITH PEPPERS AND ONIONS

Barbecued Tofu With Peppers and Onions image

This was inspired by a recipe from Jeanne Lemlin's "Vegetarian Pleasures." I made some changes to it so it is simpler to make and is more in keeping with a Nutritarian eating style. This recipe takes a little more prep time than some of my other recipes but the end result is worth it. Pressing tofu: Cut it into 1/2 inch slices. Lay the slices out on a clean kitchen towel that has been folded in half or a couple of layers of paper towel. Fold the kitchen towel over the tofu slices or place additional paper towels on top. Cover with a small cutting board and place 6 to 8 cans on top to weight it down. Let tofu sit at least 30 minutes before cutting it into 1/2 inch cubes.

BARBECUED TOFU

Barbecued Tofu image

This is adapted from a Moosewood recipe. I think that freezing, thawing, and pressing the liquid out of the tofu really improves the texture and makes it better able to absorb the sauce. I guess it's not strictly necessary to do it, though. :) Enjoy!

Time 1h30m

Yield 4 serving(s)

Number Of Ingredients 11

1 lb firm tofu
1 cup fresh orange juice
1/4 cup rice vinegar
1/3 cup soy sauce
1/4 cup canola oil
4 teaspoons dark sesame oil
3 garlic cloves, minced
1 tablespoon fresh gingerroot, minced
2 green onions, cut into 1-inch strips
1/4 cup fresh cilantro, coarsely chopped
1 -2 fresh red chili pepper, seeded and cut into strips

Without separating the pieces, place tofu on a plate. Cover with a paper towel, and place a heavy skillet on top. Set aside for 30 minutes to drain excess water from the tofu.
  • In a medium bowl, whisk together the orange juice, vinegar, soy sauce, oils, garlic, ginger.
  • Separate the pressed tofu pieces, and arrange in a baking dish in a single layer. Cover with the marinade, and sprinkle with the green onion, chili strips and cilantro. Cover with plastic wrap, and refrigerate for at least 30 minutes and up to overnight.
  • Preheat oven to 350 degrees.
  • Pour off some of the marinade, so the tofu is covered halfway. Bake for 40 to 45 minutes, without turning, until the tofu is golden and most of the marinade has been absorbed.

Tofu is an excellent source of protein, and it is a favorite choice for vegans and vegetarians who want to add more protein to their diets. Apricot orange barbecued tofu recipes are delicious and easy to prepare. However, to ensure that the dish turns out perfect every time, there are some valuable tips you should consider.

Tips for Preparing Tofu:

1. Press the Tofu:
Before you commence preparing your apricot orange barbecued tofu recipe, take time to press your tofu. Pressing tofu involves draining the excess water from it to make it firmer and more flavor-absorbent. This process helps it to retain its shape and not fall apart when cooking. You can use a tofu press or move the tofu block between clean paper towels, place it on a plate or cutting board, and then sandwich it with something heavy like a cast-iron skillet to squeeze out the water.
2. Marinate the Tofu:
Tofu on its own is pretty flavorless, but with the right marinade, it can have a robust and delicious taste. Marinades infuse the tofu with flavor and help it to be tender and juicy. When making apricot orange barbecued tofu recipes, it’s best to marinate the tofu in the fridge for at least an hour or more for a more enhanced flavor.
3. Cut the Tofu to the Right Sizes:
There is no hard rule for the size of tofu pieces you should use when making apricot orange barbecued tofu recipes. However, ensure that the sizes of the tofu match to ensure they cook evenly. Small shapes work well for a quick barbecue, but larger ones might need to be left to cook for a little longer.

Timing:

1. Use Low Heat:
When it comes to cooking your apricot orange barbecued tofu, it’s best to use low heat. High heat can lead to the tofu cooking unevenly and result in a burnt taste or texture. Slow cooking also helps to make the tofu tender and juicy.
2. Check for Doneness:
It’s essential to check your apricot orange barbecued tofu recipe often for doneness. Ensure that the internal temperature of the tofu reaches at least 165°F (74°C) to ensure that it’s cooked thoroughly. You can use a cooking thermometer to check the internal temperature, or check by cutting it open to ensure that it is cooked through.
3. Grill Time:
The grilling time for apricot orange barbecued tofu recipes depends on how thick the tofu pieces you are making are. It is best to cook the tofu for 3-5 minutes on each side over low heat. Overcooking tofu can lead to it being dry and tough to eat.

Sauce Tips:

1. Use High-Quality Sauce:
When making apricot orange barbecued tofu recipes, you will need a sauce to finish off the dish. The sauce is what makes the dish stand apart and gives it an exceptional flavor. Using high-quality sauces such as those made with organic and natural ingredients will give your dish a unique flavor.
2. Avoid Too Much Sauce:
While adding sauce is a fantastic way to elevate the dish’s flavor, you need to be careful not to overdo the sauce. Too much sauce can lead to the tofu being too soggy and taking away from its flavor. Ensure that you use just enough sauce to coat the tofu evenly.
3. Add Sauce Near the End:
When it comes to adding the sauce to your apricot orange barbecued tofu, it’s best to add it towards the end of the cooking process. Adding it too early can lead the sauce to burn or dry off, negatively impacting the dish’s flavor.

Conclusion:

Apricot orange barbecued tofu recipes are delicious, nutritious, and straightforward to make. However, to ensure your dish turns out perfect every time, there are some valuable tips you should consider. Pressing and marinating tofu, using low heat, checking for doneness, and grilling the tofu for the right amount of time are essential to prepare a delicious dish. Additionally, using high-quality sauce, avoiding too much dressing, and adding the sauce towards the end of the cooking process are essential sauce tips. Remember these tips the next time you cook apricot orange barbecued tofu, and you’ll have a delicious and healthy meal everyone will enjoy.
