This recipe came from a neighbor when I requested recipies for a cookbook our local history group was getting together. It has been a favorite of my family and many others that read it in our self published cookbook " The Main Menu of Memories". If you use fresh potatoes, they should be cooked first to al dente stage.

Valuable Tips for Making Apricot Glazed Sweet Potato Bake Recipes

Sweet potato bakes are a classic Thanksgiving side dish that many people look forward to all year. However, if you're tired of the same old recipe, why not try something new and add an apricot glaze to your sweet potato bake? This delicious combination of sweet and savory flavors is sure to impress your dinner guests. Here are some valuable tips for making the perfect apricot glazed sweet potato bake recipe:
1. Choose the right sweet potatoes
The key to a successful sweet potato bake is choosing the right sweet potatoes. Look for sweet potatoes that are evenly sized and have a smooth texture. Avoid sweet potatoes that are misshapen or have soft spots. You should also consider the type of sweet potato you want to use. There are two main varieties: orange-fleshed and white-fleshed. Orange-fleshed sweet potatoes are sweeter and have a higher moisture content, while white-fleshed sweet potatoes are starchier and have a slightly nutty flavor.
2. Cut the sweet potatoes evenly
To ensure that the sweet potatoes cook evenly and look uniform, it's important to cut them into even slices or cubes. Slice the sweet potatoes about 1/4 inch thick or cube them into 1-inch pieces. Try to keep the size of each piece consistent so that they cook at the same rate.
3. Precook the sweet potatoes
Precooking the sweet potatoes before baking them in the oven can help ensure that they cook evenly and don't end up too mushy or undercooked. You can either boil the sweet potatoes in a pot of salted water for 10-12 minutes or bake them in the oven for 15-20 minutes at 350°F.
4. Use a good quality apricot jam
The key to a great apricot glaze is using a good quality apricot jam. Look for a jam that is made with real apricots and doesn't have any added preservatives or artificial flavors. You can also consider making your own apricot jam from scratch.
5. Add some spices
To give your sweet potato bake some extra flavor, consider adding some spices to the glaze. For example, you could add a pinch of cinnamon, nutmeg, or ginger. These warm spices will complement the sweetness of the apricot glaze and add a touch of holiday flavor to the dish.
6. Use a baking dish with high sides
When making a sweet potato bake, it's important to use a baking dish with high sides. This will help prevent any of the glaze from overflowing and making a mess in your oven. A 9x13 inch baking dish with 2-3 inch sides should be perfect for this recipe.
7. Cover the dish while baking
Covering the sweet potato bake with foil while it's baking in the oven can help the sweet potatoes cook evenly and retain their moisture. You should bake the sweet potato bake covered for the first 30-40 minutes and then remove the foil for the last 10-15 minutes to allow the glaze to caramelize and the sweet potatoes to brown slightly.
8. Let it cool before serving
Finally, it's important to let the sweet potato bake cool for 5-10 minutes before serving. This will allow the glaze to set and make it easier to slice into portions. You can also sprinkle some chopped fresh parsley or thyme over the top for a pop of color and flavor. In conclusion, making an apricot glazed sweet potato bake recipe requires a bit of preparation and attention to detail. However, by following these tips and taking your time, you can create a delicious side dish that will be the talk of the dinner table. Whether you're making it for Thanksgiving, Christmas or any other special occasion, this recipe is sure to please.
