Yield 32 bars

Number Of Ingredients 19

1 1/4 cups all-purpose flour
1 teaspoon baking powder
1/4 teaspoon baking soda
1 teaspoon ground cinnamon
1/4 teaspoon ground allspice
1/4 teaspoon salt
8 tablespoons unsalted butter
1 cup packed light brown sugar
2 large eggs
1/2 cup unsweetened applesauce
1 teaspoon pure vanilla extract
1 tablespoon brandy (optional) or 1 tablespoon dark rum (optional)
1 baking apple, peeled, cored, and finely diced (Rome or Cortland)
1/2 cup raisins (dark or golden)
2 1/2 tablespoons heavy cream
1/2 cup packed light brown sugar
2 1/2 tablespoons unsalted butter
1 teaspoon light corn syrup
1/2 teaspoon pure vanilla extract

Steps:

  • Position oven rack in center; preheat oven to 350°; butter a 13 x 9 inch baking pan, line bottom with parchment paper, butter the paper and dust the inside of the pan with flour; tap out the excess flour and put the pan on a baking sheet.
  • Whisk the flour, baking powder, baking soda, spices, and salt together.
  • In a saucepan, melt the butter over low heat; add in the brown sugar and stir with a whisk until it is melted and the mixture is smooth, about 1 minute; remove pan from the heat.
  • Still working in the saucepan, whisk in the eggs one at a time, mixing until they are blended.
  • Add in the applesauce, vanilla, and applejack; whisk until the ingredients are incorporated and the mixture is once again smooth.
  • Switch to a rubber spatula and gently stir in the dry ingredients, mixing only until they disappear, then mix in the apple, raisins and nuts.
  • Scrape the batter into the prepared pan and smooth the top with a rubber spatula.
  • Bake for 23-25 minutes or until the bars just start to pull away from the sides of the pan and a knife comes out clean.
  • Transfer the baking pan to a rack and let cake cool while you make the glaze.
  • In a small saucepan, whisk together the cream, sugar, butter, and corn syrup; put pan over medium heat and bring mixture to a boil, whisking frequently.
  • Adjust the heat so the glaze simmer, and cook, whisking frequently for 5 minutes; remove pan from heat and stir in vanilla.
  • Turn the bars out onto a rack, remove the paper and invert the bars onto another rack, so they are right side up.
  • Slide the parchment paper under the rack to serve as a drip catcher.
  • Grab a long metal icing spatula and pour the hot glaze over the bars, using the spatula to spread it evenly over the cake.
  • Let them cool to room temperature before you cut them.
  • Cut into 32 rectangles, each about 2 ¼ x 1 ½ inches.

Ingredients Used in Applesauce Spice Bars Recipes

Some of the key ingredients used in applesauce spice bars recipes include flour, sugar, baking soda, cinnamon, nutmeg, cloves, salt, eggs, butter, and of course, applesauce. The flour is used as a base for the bars, while the sugar adds sweetness. Baking soda is used as a leavening agent to make the bars rise, and the spices – cinnamon, nutmeg, and cloves – add flavor and aroma. Salt is added to enhance the flavors, and the eggs provide moisture and richness to the bars. Butter is used to create a crumbly texture and to add richness to the bars. The applesauce is the star of the show – it adds moisture, sweetness, and a subtle apple flavor that ties everything together.

The Nutrition of Applesauce Spice Bars Recipes

When it comes to healthy snacking, applesauce spice bars are a great option. They are easy to make and have a delicious taste. Whether you are trying to lose weight or maintain a healthy lifestyle, these bars can be a perfect go-to snack.

Ingredients

1. Applesauce
One of the key ingredients for making applesauce spice bars is the applesauce itself. Ensure you get unsweetened and plain applesauce, as it helps to keep the bars healthy, with low sugar levels. You can also make homemade applesauce yourself, which can be a healthier option.
2. Rolled oats
Rolled oats are another essential component of applesauce spice bars as they provide a rich, nutty flavor and texture to the bars. They are an excellent source of fiber and grant satiety, making these bars a perfect on-the-go snack.
3. Spices
Cinnamon, nutmeg, allspice, and ginger are the most commonly used spices for making applesauce spice bars. These spices add an extra layer of flavor and give the bars a warm and cozy taste.
4. Sweeteners
Many applesauce spice bars recipes call for a sweetener such as maple syrup, honey, or brown sugar to add more sweetness. However, make sure not to go overboard with the sweetener and keep it in moderation.
5. Nuts and seeds
Nuts and seeds are an excellent addition to applesauce spice bars as they can offer further nutrition benefits, such as healthy fats and proteins. Almonds, pecans, walnuts, chia seeds, and flax seeds are all great options to consider.

Valuable Tips

1. Use dry ingredients in the right proportion
The balance between dry and wet ingredients can make or break the applesauce spice bars' texture and flavor. Ensure to measure the flour and oats and other dry ingredients accurately. Use a measuring cup or a kitchen scale to get the correct portion of each ingredient.
2. Don't forget the baking powder and baking soda
Baking powder and baking soda are critical ingredients that help the bars rise and be fluffy while baking. Before adding them to the mixture, double-check their expiration date, as expired baking powder or soda can affect the bars' quality.
3. Grease the baking dish properly
To prevent the bars from sticking to the baking dish, make sure to grease the dish correctly. Use a cooking spray or butter to coat the dish evenly. For easy removal, line the pan with parchment paper.
4. Don't overmix the mixture
Mix the ingredients just enough to ensure that the dry ingredients are thoroughly incorporated into the wet ingredients. Avoid overmixing, as it can make the bars too dense and chewy.
5. Let the bars cool before slicing
Let the applesauce spice bars cool for some time before slicing them. This allows the bars to set and firm up, making slicing more comfortable and avoiding any messiness.
6. Store the bars properly
Store the bars in an airtight container at room temperature for a few days, or in the freezer for an extended shelf life. Make sure to wrap them in wax paper or plastic wrap before storing them, as this will prevent sticking.

Conclusion

Making applesauce spice bars is a fun and straightforward process. By following these valuable tips and utilizing high-quality ingredients, you can make a delicious, healthy snack that is perfect for any occasion. Be creative with your flavor combinations and feel free to experiment with various ingredients to find the perfect recipe for you.
