GRANDMA'S APPLESAUCE PIE

Grandma's Applesauce Pie image

This is one of the recipes I remember most from my childhood. My grandmother always had this on hand for her grandkids who came to visit. It was invented especially for us kids because it had no "chunks" of apple in it. There was no surprise that the adults loved this pie, just as much as we did.

APPLESAUCE PIE

Applesauce Pie image

Found this recipe in one of my Amish cookbooks and made it. It's an easy old fashion pie to make and it's best to eat while still slightly warm.

Provided by Nancy Allen

Categories     Pies

Time 1h

Number Of Ingredients 9

1 single unbaked 9-inch pie crust (your favorite)
2 eggs
1 c sugar
2 Tbsp all purpose flour
1 tsp freshly grated nutmeg
1/2 c (1 stick) butter, melted
1 c chunky unsweetened applesauce
1 tsp vanilla extract
2 Tbsp fresh lemon juice

Steps:

  • 1. Preheat the oven to 350F. Place your unbaked pie crust in your pie pan and set it aside.
  • 2. In a large mixer bowl, beat the eggs until just combined. In a small mixing bowl, whisk together the sugar, flour, and nutmeg. Add the sugar mixture to the eggs and blend. Add the butter, applesauce, vanilla and lemon juice, and combine gently being careful not to overmix; you want to avoid adding to much air to the batter.
  • 3. Pour the filling into the pie shell and bake for 45 minutes or until the top of the pie is golden brown and set in the center. Remove from the oven, cool about 30 minutes on a rack, and serve slightly warm.

PUMPKIN APPLESAUCE PIE

Pumpkin Applesauce Pie image

Make and share this Pumpkin Applesauce Pie recipe from Food.com.

Provided by Sydney Mike

Categories     Pie

Time 2h10m

Yield 10 serving(s)

Number Of Ingredients 13

1 pie pastry, 9-inch deep dish
3 large eggs, room temperature
1/4 cup pure maple syrup
1 teaspoon pure vanilla extract
3/4 cup light brown sugar, packed
1 1/2 tablespoons all-purpose flour
1/2 teaspoon salt
1/2 teaspoon ground cinnamon
1/2 teaspoon ground ginger
1/4 teaspoon ground cloves
1/4 teaspoon ground nutmeg
1 cup chunky applesauce
1 cup pumpkin puree, canned

Steps:

  • Invert the pastry over a 9-inch deep dish pie pan, center it & gently tuck the pastry into the pan without stretching it, then sculpt the edge into an upstanding ridge.
  • Place the pie shell in the freezer for at least 30 minutes.
  • When ready to prebake it, preheat the oven to 400 degrees F.
  • Tear off a sheet of aluminum foil at least 15 inches long, carefully press it into the pastry until it fits like a second skin, & then arrange the excess foil on either side so that it points out like a pair of wings ~ Bunching it up underneath will deflect the heat, which you don't want to do! Fill the foil with about 1 1/2 pounds of dried beans, pushing them up the sides a little to keep the pastry snug against the pan.
  • Bake the shell on the center rack for 20 minutes, then remove it from the oven, & with hands protected, grasp the foil on either side & slowly lift the beans out of the shell.
  • Use a fork to poke the bottom of the pastry 4 or 6 times, twisting the fork slightly to enlarge the holes, so that steam can escape & help prevent the pastry from puffing up.
  • Put the pie shell back in the oven & bake for another 7 to 8 minutes, then let it cool on a wire rack for at least 15 minutes, while making the filling. Turn the oven down to 350 degrees F.
  • In a medium-size bowl, whisk the eggs until foamy & blended, then whisk in the maple syrup & vanilla. Set aside.
  • In a small mixing bowl, combine brown sugar, flour, salt & spices, then whisk this into the egg mixture.
  • Whisk in the applesauce & pumpkin, blending until smooth, then ladle the filling into the partially baked crust.
  • Place the pie on the center oven rack & bake 50 to 55 minutes. To check the pie for doneness, give the pan a quick little shake ~ The filling should not waver but should appear set in the middle. The sides might have puffed & have a flat finish while the center will be more glossy, indicating that the pie is ready to be taken from the oven & set on a wire rack to cool. Although it is very good warm, the apple flavor is more pronounced when the pie is cold.
  • If served cold, refrigerate the pie loosely covered with a sheet of waxed paper.

Applesauce pie recipes are a popular dessert that has been enjoyed by many for generations. This classic dessert is made with a homemade or store-bought crust and filled with a delicious mixture of spiced applesauce, brown sugar, and cinnamon. The pie is then baked to perfection and served warm with a dollop of whipped cream on top. In this article, we will explore the history and variations of applesauce pie recipes, as well as their nutritional benefits and cultural significance.

History of Applesauce Pie Recipes

Applesauce pie recipes originated in the United States during the 19th century. At that time, apples were a staple crop in many parts of the country, and bakers were always looking for new ways to use them in their recipes. One of the earliest recorded recipes for applesauce pie can be found in the 1877 edition of the "Buckeye Cookery and Practical Housekeeping" cookbook. This recipe called for a pastry crust filled with applesauce, sugar, and eggs, and was flavored with nutmeg and cinnamon. Over time, applesauce pie recipes evolved to include a wider variety of ingredients, such as raisins, currants, and nuts. Some recipes also call for the addition of cream or sour cream, which gives the pie a richer, creamier texture. Regardless of the variations, though, the basic idea of the pie remained the same: a filling made from spiced applesauce, baked in a crust until golden brown.

Types of Applesauce Pie Recipes

There are many different types of applesauce pie recipes, each with its unique twist on the classic dessert. Here are a few of the most popular variations:
Cinnamon Applesauce Pie
This recipe is the traditional version of applesauce pie and is made with a flaky, buttery crust and a filling of spiced applesauce, brown sugar, and cinnamon. The cinnamon adds an extra layer of warmth and flavor to the pie, making it the perfect dessert for chilly autumn evenings.
Chunky Applesauce Pie
A chunky applesauce pie recipe is made with a chunky, homemade applesauce instead of a smooth one. This gives the pie a more rustic, home-style feel and adds texture to the filling. Some recipes also call for the addition of chopped nuts or raisins, which adds even more texture and flavor to the pie.
Sour Cream Applesauce Pie
This recipe is made with a creamy, tangy filling of sour cream and spiced applesauce. The sour cream gives the pie a rich, decadent texture and adds a welcome tanginess to the sweet applesauce flavors. This pie is perfect for those who love creamy desserts that are not too sweet.

Nutritional Benefits of Applesauce Pie Recipes

Applesauce pie recipes contain several nutritional benefits, especially if made with homemade applesauce and a whole-grain crust. Here are a few of the key nutritional benefits of applesauce pie:
High in Fiber
Applesauce is high in fiber, which helps to slow down the absorption of sugar into the bloodstream. This can help to regulate blood sugar levels and prevent spikes and crashes in energy levels.
Rich in Antioxidants
Applesauce contains antioxidants, which can help to protect the body from free radical damage and reduce the risk of chronic diseases such as cancer and heart disease.
Low in Fat
When made with a homemade crust and minimal added fats, applesauce pie recipes are relatively low in fat. This makes them a healthier dessert option compared to many other dessert recipes, which can be high in fat and sugar.

Cultural Significance of Applesauce Pie Recipes

Applesauce pie recipes have a long history of cultural significance in the United States. They are often associated with fall and winter holidays such as Thanksgiving and Christmas and are a staple of many American families' holiday traditions. In some regions of the country, applesauce pie is also known as "mock apple pie," as it is a delicious alternative to traditional apple pie when fresh apples are out of season or hard to come by.
Conclusion
In conclusion, applesauce pie recipes are a beloved American dessert that has been enjoyed for generations. Whether you prefer your pie with a traditional cinnamon filling, a chunky texture, or a creamy sour cream filling, there is a recipe out there for everyone. So why not make your own applesauce pie today and experience the rich flavors and history of this delicious dessert?
Applesauce pie is a delicious dessert that is perfect for any occasion. It is made with a homemade crust and filled with sweet and spicy applesauce filling. Making the perfect applesauce pie can be easy, but it requires some knowledge and tips to make it perfect. This article will provide you with valuable tips and tricks to make the perfect applesauce pie recipe without the recipe. 1. Choose the right apples: The first and most important tip for making a perfect applesauce pie is choosing the right apples. It is essential to select the apples which are tart, crisp and firm to ensure that the pie will not be too sweet or too mushy. Some of the best apples for applesauce pie are Granny Smith, Honeycrisp, Braeburn, Rome, Jonathan, and Pink Lady. 2. Prepare the applesauce filling: After selecting the right apples, the next step is to prepare the applesauce filling. Making homemade applesauce filling is easy and just requires simmering the chopped apples with sugar, cinnamon, and some other spices until it becomes thick and flavorful. To make your applesauce filling even more special, you can add some raisins, cranberries or nuts. You can also add a splash of brandy or rum to give the filling a deep and spicy flavor. 3. Add Sweetness: To make the perfect applesauce pie, it is important to add the desired amount of sweetness. The sweetness can be added by using granulated sugar, brown sugar, or honey. It is important not to add too much sweetener as it can overpower the flavor of the apples. It is better to add the sweetener in small increments until you reach the desired level of sweetness. 4. Spices: Spices are what give the applesauce pie its unique flavor. Cinnamon is the most common spice used in applesauce pie, but you can also use ginger, allspice, nutmeg, cloves, vanilla, or even cardamom. Use these spices in moderation, so they don't overpower the flavor of the apples. 5. Use Cold Butter: To make the perfect crust for your pie, it is essential to use cold butter. Cold butter will make your crust more flaky and crisp. Use a pastry cutter or your fingers to blend the butter with the flour, sugar, and salt until it resembles coarse crumbs. Make sure to work quickly so that the butter doesn't melt. 6. Chill the Dough: Once you have prepared the dough for your pie crust, it is essential to chill it for at least 30 minutes. Chilling the dough will ensure that it is easier to work with and will not shrink when baking. 7. Blind bake the crust: To avoid a soggy bottom, it is essential to blind bake the crust. Blind baking means pre-baking the crust without any filling. To blind bake, line the crust with parchment paper and fill it with weights like dried beans or pie weights. Bake the crust for 15-20 minutes at 375°F. 8. Add the Filling: Now that you have prepared the crust and the filling, it's time to add the filling to the crust. Make sure to distribute the filling evenly and not overstuff the crust. 9. Bake the Pie Perfectly: Baking the pie at the right temperature and for the right amount of time is very important. Bake the pie at 375°F for 35-45 minutes or until the crust is golden brown and the filling is bubbling. You can cover the crust with foil if it starts to brown too quickly. 10. Let it cool: After baking, let the pie cool for at least 30 minutes before slicing it. This allows the filling to set and makes it easier to cut the slices. Conclusion: Making the perfect applesauce pie requires some knowledge and techniques, such as choosing the right apples, preparing the filling, adding the sweetness and spices, using cold butter and chilling the dough, blind baking the crust, adding the filling and baking it perfectly, and letting it cool. Follow these tips, and you'll be sure to make the perfect applesauce pie every time.
