Making candies is a fun activity to do at home, especially during the holidays. Applesauce candy recipes are great because your kids can help make them, and they are healthier than traditional candies because they use applesauce as a sweetener. However, making applesauce candy recipes can be tricky, especially if you are a novice candy maker. Here are some valuable tips to help you when making applesauce candy recipes.
Tip 1: Use a Candy Thermometer
Using a candy thermometer is crucial when making applesauce candies. This tool helps you to determine the correct temperature for the candy. Without it, you might end up with a candy that is too soft or too hard. Additionally, you can also avoid burning your candy, which might lead to undesirable flavor and texture.
Tip 2: Use High-Quality Ingredients
The quality of your ingredients will affect the outcome of your candies. When making applesauce candy recipes, it is best to use high-quality ingredients. Use fresh applesauce with no added sugar, high-quality butter, and pure vanilla extract to ensure that your candies taste good.
Tip 3: Avoid Overcooking the Candy
One of the most common mistakes that candy makers make when making applesauce candies is overcooking the candy. Overcooking can lead to a hard and brittle candy that is difficult to eat. It is important to remove your candy from heat once it has reached the desired temperature as specified by the recipe.
Tip 4: Work Quickly
When making applesauce candies, it is important to work quickly because the candy can quickly set at room temperature. Once the candy has set, it can be difficult to shape it or add any extra ingredients. To work quickly, make sure you have all the necessary utensils and ingredients within reach.
Tip 5: Use Cooking Spray to Prevent Stickiness
Cooking spray can be handy when making applesauce candy recipes, especially when rolling the candy. Spray your hands with cooking spray before rolling the candy to prevent it from sticking to your hands. This will help you to shape the candy quickly and easily.
Tip 6: Chill the Candy Before Cutting
Chilling the candy before cutting is important to ensure that you get clean and precise cuts. Once the candy has cooled, transfer it to the refrigerator to chill for about 10 to 15 minutes. This will make it easier to cut into the desired shape and size.
Tip 7: Store in an Airtight Container
Store your applesauce candies in an airtight container at room temperature. This will prevent the candy from becoming sticky and will maintain its shape and texture. Applesauce candies can last for up to a week if stored properly.
Tip 8: Experiment with Flavors
Applesauce candy recipes can be customized to suit your preference. Experiment with different flavors and ingredients to make each batch unique. You can add spices such as cinnamon or nutmeg to give the candy a warm and cozy flavor, or you can add nuts or sprinkles to make the candy more festive.
