  • Mix at medium speed until flour is moistened and batter is creamy.
  • Spread batter evenly in a 9 x 13-inch cake pan that has been sprayed with cooking spray or greased well with margarine or butter.

Tips for Perfect Applesauce Bar Cookies

Everyone loves cookies, but sometimes you just want a snack that's a little more substantial. That's where applesauce bar cookies come in! These delicious treats are easy to make and perfect for any occasion. However, there are a few tips you should keep in mind to ensure your applesauce bar cookies turn out perfectly every time. Here are some valuable tips to keep in mind when making applesauce bar cookies:
1. Use the Right Pan
The first tip for making perfect applesauce bar cookies is to use the right pan. It's important to use a pan that's the right size (usually around 9x13 inches) and made of a material that conducts heat evenly. A metal pan or a glass baking dish will work, but stay away from non-stick or dark colored pans. These can cause your cookies to cook unevenly or burn on the bottom.
2. Prep Your Pan Properly
Once you've chosen your pan, it's time to prep it properly. Make sure you grease and flour the pan to prevent sticking. You can also line it with parchment paper for easy removal and clean up. If you're using a glass baking dish, you can skip the flour and just grease it with butter or cooking spray.
3. Don't Overmix Your Batter
When making applesauce bar cookies, it's important not to overmix your batter. Overmixing can cause your cookies to become tough and dry. Mix your ingredients just until everything is combined and no lumps remain. Remember to scrape the sides and bottom of the bowl with a spatula to make sure everything is well mixed.
4. Use Fresh Ingredients
Using fresh ingredients is crucial for making delicious applesauce bar cookies. Be sure to use fresh eggs and verify your baking powder is still potent for maximum lift. Also, make sure your butter and applesauce are fresh with no off flavors or rancidity.
5. Chill Your Batter
After you've mixed your batter, it's a good idea to chill it before baking. This will help the dough firm up and prevent it from spreading too much in the oven. Chilling for at least 30 minutes is recommended. If you can, let your dough chill overnight for best results.
6. Spread Your Batter Evenly
When you're ready to bake, be sure to spread your dough evenly in the prepared pan. Use a spatula to smooth out the surface and make sure there are no air pockets. Uneven batter can result in uneven cookies that won't cook properly.
7. Don't Overbake Your Cookies
One of the most important things to keep in mind when baking applesauce bar cookies is to not overbake them. Overbaking can result in dry, crumbly cookies that nobody wants to eat. Check your cookies at the minimum baking time and continue checking every few minutes until done. The edges should be lightly browned and the center should be set.
8. Let Your Cookies Cool Completely
Once your applesauce bar cookies are done baking, it's tempting to take them out of the oven and start snacking right away. However, it's important to let your cookies cool completely before cutting them into bars. This will help them set up properly and prevent crumbling. If you try to cut into a hot cookie, it can fall apart and you'll end up with a mess.
9. Store Your Cookies Properly
Finally, be sure to store your applesauce bar cookies properly to keep them fresh for as long as possible. Store them in an airtight container at room temperature for up to 5 days. You can also freeze them for later enjoyment, but be sure to thaw them completely before eating.

Final Thoughts

If you follow these tips when making applesauce bar cookies, you're sure to end up with delicious treats that everyone will love. Remember to use fresh ingredients, chill your batter, and not overbake your cookies. With a little practice, you'll be making perfect applesauce bar cookies every time.
