Time 2h30m

Yield 8 to 10 servings

Number Of Ingredients 16

Nonstick cooking spray
3 Granny Smith apples (about 1 pound 6 ounces), peeled and cored with an apple corer
1 3/4 cups all-purpose flour
3/4 cup granulated sugar
1 1/2 teaspoons baking powder
1 teaspoon ground cinnamon
1/2 teaspoon ground cardamom
1/4 teaspoon ground allspice
1/4 teaspoon ground nutmeg
Kosher salt
2 large eggs
1/2 cup vegetable oil
1/4 cup buttermilk
1 tablespoon pure vanilla extract
1/2 cup plus 1 tablespoon honey
1/4 cup confectioners' sugar

Steps:

  • Preheat the oven to 350 degrees F. Spray an 8 1/2-by-4 1/2-inch loaf pan with nonstick cooking spray.
  • Stand each apple upright (with what would have been the stem-side up) on a cutting board. Working with 1 apple at a time, slice the apples vertically 1/4 inch thick, squeezing together the slices to keep the shape of the whole apple as intact as possible. Immediately place it into the prepared loaf pan, keeping the shape of the whole apple intact with the slices parallel to the long sides of the pan. Repeat with the remaining 2 apples.
  • Combine the flour, sugar, baking powder, cinnamon, cardamom, allspice, nutmeg and 1/2 teaspoon salt in a medium bowl. Whisk together the eggs, vegetable oil, buttermilk, vanilla and 1/2 cup honey in another medium bowl until smooth. Add the flour mixture to the honey mixture and whisk until the batter is smooth. Pour the batter over the apples in the loaf pan, scraping the bowl with a rubber spatula to make sure all the batter is used. Gently tap the pan 3 times on the counter to evenly distribute the batter throughout the apples.
  • Bake until a toothpick comes out with just a few moist crumbs, about 1 hour. Transfer the pan to a wire rack and let the cake cool completely, 1 hour to 1 hour 15 minutes. Invert the cake onto a serving platter.
  • Whisk the confectioners' sugar with 1 teaspoon water, 1/4 teaspoon salt and the remaining 1 tablespoon honey in a small bowl until smooth. Drizzle the glaze over the top of the cake. Serve at room temperature. Store in an airtight container for up to 1 week.

APPLES WITH HONEY AND CRUSHED WALNUTS

Apples With Honey and Crushed Walnuts image

Tradition is a beautiful thing, unless it requires you to make something you don't enjoy making or eating. For me, that's charoset. Classically, it's an apple-walnut mixture (occasionally including a touch of cinnamon or dried fruit, or a combination) that ranges from chunky-relish to chunky-paste, and it's never been my favorite thing on the table. I've always wanted it tangier, crunchier and, well, I wanted a salad. This is that salad. It's meant to be more acidic than sweet, but adjust with vinegar and honey as needed to suit your preference. A note: Nearly everyone who ate this salad said it was their favorite part of the whole meal, which bruised my matzo ball ego, but I thought you should know.

Categories     salads and dressings, side dish

Time 15m

Yield 8 to 10 servings

Number Of Ingredients 6

1 cup raw walnut pieces or halves
4 Honeycrisp or Pink Lady apples, or a comparable sweet-tart variety
2 tablespoons apple cider vinegar, plus more to taste
Flaky sea salt and freshly ground black pepper
2 tablespoons honey, plus more to taste
Olive oil, for drizzling

Steps:

  • Heat oven to 325 degrees. Spread walnuts in an even layer on a rimmed baking sheet. Toast walnuts until golden brown and fragrant, 8 to 10 minutes. (You can also do this in a toaster oven.) Let cool. Using your hands or a knife if you like, crush or finely chop walnuts. Set aside.
  • Thinly slice apples (with a mandoline or a sharp knife) any way you please. (Rounds are excellent if you don't mind eating the edible core.) Scatter the slices onto a large serving platter or bowl. Drizzle 2 tablespoons apple cider vinegar over apples, and season with salt and pepper; give them a little toss and drizzle with 2 tablespoons honey. Taste an apple slice and adjust seasoning with more vinegar or honey, as needed. Sprinkle with walnuts, and finish with a drizzle of olive oil, flaky salt and pepper.

Apples with honey recipes are a popular culinary practice that dates back to ancient times, and it has survived the test of time to remain a staple in many households. This recipe involves the combination of two natural sweeteners, namely apples and honey, to create a dish that is both tasty and healthy. Apple with honey recipes are easy to prepare, and they can be served as a snack, dessert or side dish.

History of Apples with Honey Recipes

The practice of combining apples and honey dates back to ancient times when honey was the primary sweetener before sugar was discovered. The combination was primarily used for medicinal purposes as it was believed to have healing properties. In ancient Israel, it was customary to dip apples in honey during the Jewish holiday of Rosh Hashanah, the Jewish New Year, as a symbol of hope for a sweet year ahead. The practice has since spread to other cultures, and apples with honey recipes are now popular all over the world.

Benefits of Apples with Honey Recipes

Apples with honey recipes offer a wide range of nutritional benefits. Apples are rich in antioxidants, fiber, and vitamin C, which makes them excellent for digestive health and promoting cardiovascular health. 2. Promotes Cardiovascular Health

Studies have shown that regular consumption of apples is linked to a reduced risk of heart disease. Apples are rich in flavonoids that help to lower blood pressure and cholesterol levels. Honey, on the other hand, contains antioxidants that help to reduce the risk of heart disease and stroke.

3. Boosts Energy Levels

The natural sugars found in apples and honey provide an energy boost without spiking blood sugar levels. Honey, in particular, is an excellent source of quick energy as it is easily converted into glucose.

Apples with honey is a classic and easy-to-make dessert that can be enjoyed throughout the year. This dish combines the sweetness of apples and honey, creating a flavor that is both comforting and luxurious. Whether you are preparing for a dinner party, a family gathering, or a quiet evening at home, apples with honey is the perfect dessert to satisfy your sweet tooth. In this article, we’ll provide you with valuable tips to help you make delicious apples with honey recipes.

Tip #1: Choose the Right Apples

When it comes to making apples with honey, the type of apple you choose can make a big difference in the overall taste and texture of your dish. Some apples are better for baking than others, and some are sweeter than others. For this recipe, it’s recommended to choose apples that are crisp and tart to balance out the sweetness of the honey. Granny Smith, Honeycrisp, and Braeburn are some of the top choices. It’s best to avoid using soft or mealy apples, such as Red Delicious apples, as they tend to become mushy when baked.

Tip #2: Choose the Right Honey

Choosing the right type of honey is equally as important as selecting the right apples. There are many different types of honey available in the market, each with its own unique flavor and texture. For apples with honey recipe, it’s recommended to use a mild-flavored honey, such as clover honey, as it will complement the flavor of the apples without overwhelming it. You may also consider using local honey, which tends to be fresher and of better quality.

Tip #3: Properly Preparing the Apples

To ensure that your apples will come out tender and delicious in your recipe, it’s important to prepare them properly. Start by washing and peeling the apples. After peeling, cut the apples into evenly sized pieces to ensure even cooking. It’s recommended to cut the apples into ½ inch to 1-inch cubes. This will make it easier to bake and reduce cooking time. Once cut, toss the apples with a tablespoon of lemon juice to prevent browning.

Tip #4: Properly Layering the Apples in the Baking Dish

Properly layering your apples in the baking dish will help to ensure that they are cooked evenly and that the honey is distributed evenly. Start by buttering the baking dish, then add a layer of apples. Drizzle honey over the apples, then add another layer of apples. Repeat the layers until all of the apples are used up. Drizzle a final layer of honey over the top layer of apples. It’s important not to overfill the baking dish, as this can cause the honey to overflow and create a mess in your oven.

Tip #5: Preparing the Honey Mixture

To prepare the honey mixture, you will need the right ingredients and equipment. In a small saucepan, combine honey, brown sugar, vanilla extract, cinnamon, and nutmeg. Cook over low heat, stirring constantly, until the mixture is smooth and well combined. Once the honey mixture is ready, pour it over the apples in the baking dish, making sure that it is evenly distributed.

Tip #6: Baking Time and Temperature

Baking time and temperature are crucial when making apples with honey. Preheat your oven to 375 degrees Fahrenheit. Bake your apples with honey for about 35-40 minutes or until the apples are tender but not overcooked. To check if the apples are ready, insert a fork into the center of the dish. If the fork goes in easily, the apples are done. If not, continue baking for a few more minutes.

Tip #7: Serving the Apples with Honey

Once the apples with honey have been baked to perfection, it’s time to serve them. You can serve them hot, cold or warm, depending on your preference. They can be served on their own or with a side of vanilla ice cream or whipped cream for added decadence. Garnish them with chopped nuts, such as walnuts or almonds, for added texture and flavor.

Conclusion

Remember, making apples with honey is easy and enjoyable. However, it’s important to choose the right ingredients, prepare the apples correctly, and bake them at the right temperature for the perfect outcome. With these valuable tips in mind, you are sure to impress your guests with your delicious apples with honey dessert.
