COPYCAT APPLEBEE'S CLASSIC PATTY MELT
This is what a patty melt should be. Griddled patties, sauteed onions, a delicious sauce and of course, cheese. And thick bread. You have to have thick bread or you'll end up with sandwich sadness.

- Fire up a grill or heat a skillet over medium-high heat.
- Season the burger with salt, pepper and garlic powder and cook until done.
- Meanwhile, melt 1 tablespoon of the butter in a medium skillet over medium-high heat and add the onion. Season with salt, pepper and garlic powder and saute until softened.
- Combine the mayo, garlic and mustard and slather on one side of each slice of bread.
- Melt remaining 2 tablespoons of butter in a large skillet over medium-high heat.
- Add the bread slices, mayonnaise mix side up, and swirl around to coat in the butter.
- Add one slice of Swiss to two of the bread slices, and one slice of cheddar to the other.
- Assemble sandwich by placing cooked patties on top of the two bread slices with Swiss, add the onions and then the top bread slices.

- 1. Season one side of the burger with salt, pepper and garlic. Place on grill or in broiler, seasoned side down. Then season the other side. Cook to desired doneness. While burger is cooking, melt butter in fry pan on medium heat or in electric skillet (set at 350 degrees). Spread mayonnaise onto bread. Drop bread, dry side down, onto melted pools and swirl to coat (to avoid sticking/burning). Cover one slice of bread with two slices of Swiss cheese and the other with two slices of Cheddar. In a separate frying pan, melt butter and sauté sliced onions. Season with salt, pepper and garlic while heating. Place cooked burger patty on top of one cheese-topped slice of bread and the sautéed onions on the other. Carefully close and cut sandwich.

- 4 slices of rye bread
- 4 slices of Swiss cheese
- 4 tablespoons of butter
- 4 tablespoons of Thousand Island dressing
- Salt and pepper to taste
Preparation
- Begin by preheating a medium-sized skillet or griddle to medium heat.
- In a large mixing bowl, combine the ground beef and chopped onion, and mix together until well blended.
- Divide the beef mixture into four compact portions and shape them into patties a little larger than the rye bread slices.
- Add butter to the preheated skillet or griddle to melt, and place the patties on the heated surface.
- Sprinkle each patty with salt and pepper to taste, and cook for approximately 4 minutes on each side or until fully cooked.
- In the meantime, toast the rye bread slices in a toaster or on a griddle until golden brown.
- Spread a tablespoon of Thousand Island dressing onto each slice of rye bread.
- When the patties are fully cooked, assemble the sandwich by placing each patty on top of a slice of rye bread, and then place a slice of Swiss cheese on top.
- Finally, cover with the second slice of rye bread, dressing side down.
- Immediately serve your patty melt sandwich hot and enjoy!
