Applebee's Classic Patty Melt is one of the most popular dishes among food enthusiasts. The combination of the juicy patty, caramelized onions, and melted cheese sandwiched between two slices of grilled bread is irresistible. Making this dish at home can be a bit tricky but by following these valuable tips, you can recreate the Applebee's Classic Patty Melt like a pro.

Tip 1: Choosing the Meat

The key to making the perfect patty melt is choosing the right kind of meat. Ground beef with a good fat content (around 80% lean and 20% fat) works best. The fat is necessary to keep the patty moist and juicy as it cooks. If you prefer, you can also use ground turkey or chicken. Remember to keep the thickness of the patty consistent, so that it cooks evenly.

Tip 2: Seasoning the Patty

The seasoning is what gives the patty its flavor. Although you can use different spice combinations, salt, and black pepper are the most basic seasonings. Before shaping the patty, sprinkle some salt and pepper on both sides. Don't overdo the seasoning as it can overwhelm the flavor of the meat.

Tip 3: Preparing the Onions

Caramelized onions are the perfect topping for a patty melt. They add flavor and sweetness to the dish. To prepare the onions, slice them thinly and cook them over low heat until they are soft and lightly browned. Adding a pinch of salt and sugar can help the onions caramelize faster. Don't rush the process as it can burn the onions and make them bitter.

Tip 4: Choosing the Right Cheese

Cheese is another essential ingredient in a patty melt. The classic choice is Swiss cheese as it melts well and has a mild and nutty flavor. However, you can also use cheddar, provolone, or any other cheese that you like. Make sure to slice the cheese thinly so that it melts evenly over the patty.

Tip 5: Toasting the Bread

The bread is what holds everything together, so it's crucial to choose the right type of bread and toast it correctly. Rye bread is the traditional choice for a patty melt, but you can also use sourdough or any other bread that you like. Before toasting, brush both sides of the bread with melted butter or oil to prevent it from getting soggy. Toast the bread in a pan over medium heat until it's golden brown and crispy.

Tip 6: Assembling the Patty Melt

To assemble the patty melt, place the toasted bread slices on a baking sheet. Add a slice of cheese on top of each slice of bread, followed by the patty and the caramelized onions. Top it with another slice of cheese and another slice of bread. Bake the patty melt in the oven at 350°F for 5-7 minutes or until the cheese is melted and bubbly.

Tip 7: Serving the Patty Melt

Once the patty melts are out of the oven, let them cool for a minute or two before slicing them in half. Serve them hot with your favorite side dishes, such as French fries, coleslaw, or a salad. Some people like to dip their patty melts in ketchup or mustard for added flavor.
Conclusion
Making an Applebee's Classic Patty Melt at home can be a fun and rewarding experience. By following these valuable tips, you can create a delicious and satisfying meal that everyone will love. Remember to choose the right meat, season it well, caramelize the onions, choose the right cheese, toast the bread correctly, and assemble the patty melt with care. With a little practice, you can become a patty melt expert in no time!
