CHICKEN-APPLE-WALNUT SALAD WITH HONEY MUSTARD DRESSING

Chicken-Apple-Walnut Salad With Honey Mustard Dressing image

Served at the 1870 Wedgwood Inn in New Hope Boro, Pennsylvania, this simple chicken salad combines common ingredients in a less-than-common way, and with great results. If you happen to have some cooked chicken in your fridge (or perhaps a rotisserie chicken), you could probably save time by simply shredding that and using it instead of the freshly cooked diced chicken. NOTE: Cook time is chill time for the prepared salad.

When it comes to salads, the apple walnut chicken salad is a classic. It's a healthy choice that is satisfying and delicious. With a mix of greens, juicy apples, crunchy walnuts, and savory chicken, this salad is a perfect balance of flavors and textures. However, making the perfect apple walnut chicken salad can be tricky. Here are some valuable tips that can help you turn out a winning recipe every time.

Choose the Right Greens

The foundation of any salad is its greens. The right greens can make all the difference to your salad. For the apple walnut chicken salad, it's recommended that you use a mix of greens. This could be a mixture of kale, spinach, or arugula. These greens have a slightly bitter taste that complements the sweetness of the apples and the savory flavor of the chicken.
Tip 1: Don't Overdo the Greens
While the greens are an essential part of the salad, it's important not to fill the bowl with too many greens. Too many greens can make the salad taste bland and take away from the other flavors. A good rule of thumb is to have one part greens and three parts other ingredients.
Tip 2: Wash Your Greens Properly
It's essential to wash your greens thoroughly, as they can harbor dirt and bacteria. To make sure your greens are clean, fill a bowl with water and soak your leaves for about 10 minutes. Then, rinse the greens under running water, and shake off any excess water.

Choose the Right Apples

The apples are the star of this salad, and the right apples can make all the difference in taste. You can choose any type of apple, but some are better suited than others. It's recommended that you use tart apples such as granny smith, braeburn, or honeycrisp apples. These apples have a balance of sweet and sour that complements the other flavors in the salad.
Tip 3: Slice Your Apples Thinly
The key to getting the most out of your apples is to slice them thinly. This ensures that the apples are distributed evenly throughout the salad, and every bite has a bit of apple in it.
Tip 4: Don't Cut Your Apples in Advance
If you cut your apples in advance, they will start to turn brown, and the texture will change. Nobody wants to eat a brown salad! To prevent this, cut the apples just before you're ready to serve the salad.

Choose the Right Chicken

The chicken is the protein in this salad, and it's important to choose the right chicken. You can use grilled, baked or poached chicken breast, but make sure it's cooked through and juicy.
Tip 5: Marinate Your Chicken
To give your chicken some extra flavor, marinate it for at least an hour before cooking it. This will enhance the taste of the chicken and make it more tender.
Tip 6: Slice the Chicken into Bite-Sized Pieces
To ensure that the chicken is evenly distributed throughout the salad, slice it into bite-sized pieces. This also makes it easier to eat the salad.

Choose the Right Walnuts

Walnuts are a crucial component of this salad, and the right type of walnuts can enhance the overall taste of the salad. Use chopped or crushed walnuts to add crunch and texture to the salad.
Tip 7: Toast Your Walnuts
Toasting the walnuts before adding them to the salad enhances their flavor and gives them a delightful crunch. Toast the walnuts in a skillet over medium heat for a few minutes or until they turn lightly brown. Make sure to keep an eye on them and stir continuously to prevent them from burning.
Tip 8: Don't Overdo the Walnuts
While walnuts are an important ingredient, it's important not to overdo it. Too many walnuts can overpower the other flavors in the salad. A handful of walnuts is usually enough to add the right amount of crunch.

Choose the Right Dressing

Finally, the dressing is a crucial part of this salad, and choosing the right dressing can make all the difference. A light vinaigrette or a creamy balsamic dressing are both great options.
Tip 9: Keep the Dressing Simple
When it comes to the dressing, it's best to keep it simple. A light dressing allows the flavors of the other ingredients to shine without overpowering them. Use a light hand when adding the dressing and toss the salad thoroughly to ensure that it's distributed evenly.
Tip 10: Add Dressing Just Before Serving
To prevent the greens from becoming soggy, add the dressing just before serving. This ensures that the salad stays fresh and crunchy.

Conclusion

The apple walnut chicken salad is a classic salad that is easy to make and delicious. By following these valuable tips, you can turn out a winning recipe every time. Choose the right greens, apples, chicken, walnuts, and dressing, and you'll have a salad that is healthy, satisfying, and bursting with flavor.
