APPLE WALNUT BREAD (BREAD MACHINE)

Apple Walnut Bread (Bread Machine) image

This is for a bread machine, but can also be shaped by hand if you desire. I have done this with half white whole wheat flour (King Arthur) and it works well, too. If your machine has a "sweet" setting, use that, as it will keep the high-sugar contents from getting dark too fast.

Provided by Susan Feliciano

Categories     Sweet Breads

Time 2h35m

Number Of Ingredients 12

6 oz unsweetened applesauce
3 1/2 oz apple juice
1 tsp salt
3 Tbsp butter

1/4 c brown sugar, packed
1 1/4 tsp cinnamon
1/2 tsp baking soda
2 tsp active dry yeast (quick acting)
1/2 c chopped walnuts
1/2 c chopped dried cranberries (optional)

Steps:

  • 1. Measure all ingredients into the bread machine pan, in the order given. Select the "sweet" or "basic" setting. Start machine and operate according to manufacturer's instructions.
  • 2. If desired to shape by hand, operate machine using "dough only" setting. Remove dough from machine when done, cover, and let rest 20 minutes.
  • 3. Shape bread into a braid by dividing into 3 parts and rolling out into thin tubes, then braid together. Place on greased baking sheet. Brush with an egg wash. (Or place dough into well greased bread pan.) Allow to rise in warm place until doubled, about 45-60 minutes. Bake in a preheated 350 degree oven for 30 minutes. Baking your own bread can be a rewarding and delicious experience. With the help of a bread machine, making bread at home has never been easier. One popular recipe for bread machine owners is apple walnut bread. The combination of sweet apples and crunchy walnuts make for a delightful texture and taste. In this article, we will discuss some valuable tips to keep in mind when making apple walnut bread in a bread machine. These tips will ensure that your bread turns out perfectly every time.

Tip 1: Use Fresh Ingredients

When making apple walnut bread, it is important to use fresh ingredients. Using fresh ingredients will give your bread a better texture and taste. Make sure to use fresh apples and walnuts. Apples that have been sitting in your fridge for too long may not be as sweet and flavorful. Similarly, walnuts can get rancid over time, so make sure to purchase fresh walnuts for your bread.

Tip 2: Measure Your Ingredients Accurately

Baking is a science, and accuracy is key. Make sure to measure your ingredients accurately to ensure that your bread turns out just right. A common mistake that many beginner bakers make is scooping flour straight from the bag. This can result in too much flour being added to the recipe, which can make your bread dense and dry. Use a measuring cup or scale to accurately measure your flour, sugar, and other ingredients.

Tip 3: Use the Right Machine Settings

Different bread machines have different settings. Make sure to read the instructions for your specific machine to understand which settings to use for making apple walnut bread. Most bread machines have a setting for sweet bread, which is perfect for this recipe. Additionally, make sure to use a timer if your machine has one, so you can set your bread to bake at a specific time.

Tip 4: Add Ingredients in the Correct Order

When using a bread machine, it is important to add ingredients in the correct order. The order in which you add ingredients can affect how well they mix together, which can impact the texture of your bread. Generally, the liquid ingredients should be added first, followed by the dry ingredients. Finally, add the yeast last, making sure to create a small well in the center of the flour for the yeast to be placed in.

Tip 5: Check the Dough Consistency

The consistency of your dough is important when making bread. If your dough is too dry, it may result in a dense and heavy bread. If your dough is too wet, it may not rise properly. Keep an eye on the dough as it mixes in the machine. If it appears too dry or too wet, you can adjust the consistency by adding a bit more liquid or flour, respectively.

Tip 6: Allow Time for Rising

Rising is an important step in making bread. It allows the yeast to grow and create air pockets in the dough, which gives bread its light and fluffy texture. Make sure to allow the proper amount of time for your bread to rise. Generally, this will be around 1-2 hours depending on the recipe, but check your specific recipe for instructions.

Tip 7: Add the Walnuts and Apples at the Right Time

Adding the walnuts and apples to the bread dough is a crucial step in making apple walnut bread. Make sure to add the apples and walnuts at the right time. Generally, this will be towards the end of the mixing or rising process. This allows the apples and walnuts to be evenly distributed throughout the bread.

Tip 8: Use Proper Storage

Proper storage of your bread is important to maintain its freshness and texture. Make sure to store your bread in an airtight container or bread box to prevent it from drying out. If you won't be able to consume the bread within a few days, you can also freeze it for later use. Simply wrap it tightly in plastic wrap and store it in the freezer for up to 3 months.

Conclusion

Making apple walnut bread in a bread machine is easy and delicious, but it does require some attention to detail. By following these valuable tips, you can ensure that your bread turns out perfect every time. Use fresh ingredients, measure accurately, use the right machine settings, add ingredients in the correct order, check the dough consistency, allow time for rising, add the walnuts and apples at the right time, and use proper storage. With these tips in mind, you'll be making delicious apple walnut bread in no time!
