FALL APPLE COBBLER WITH STREUSEL TOPPING

Fall Apple Cobbler With Streusel Topping image

I have been making this recipe for years, and it always results in someone asking me for the recipe. I often cut the recipe in half and make it for my family in an 8x8 pan. It serves nicely (not a gooey mess) and is great served warm with vanilla ice cream. A bonus - it's lower in fats and calories.

Time 1h

Yield 12 serving(s)

Number Of Ingredients 17

12 cups apples, peeled and sliced (Macintosh, Jonagold)
1 tablespoon lemon juice
3/4 cup sugar
1 tablespoon cinnamon
1/4 teaspoon nutmeg
1 1/2 tablespoons cornstarch
1 1/3 cups flour
1 tablespoon baking powder
1/2 teaspoon salt
2/3 cup sugar
4 tablespoons butter, melted
1 cup milk
2 tablespoons butter, melted
1/3 cup oatmeal (I use Quick Oats)
1/3 cup brown sugar
1/3 cup walnuts, chopped (optional)
1 teaspoon cinnamon

Steps:

  • Prepare 9x13 pan with non-stick spray; preheat oven to 350.
  • Prepare APPLES: toss sliced apples with lemon juice, sugar, cinnamon, nutmeg and cornstarch. Pour apple mixture into prepared pan. BAKE APPLES 10 minutes.
  • While apples are baking, combine STREUSEL ingredients; set aside.
  • Prepare BATTER: Mix batter dry ingredients in a bowl. When apples are done, whisk in milk and melted butter (batter will thicken if it sits). Immediately pour batter over hot apples; sprinkle streusel on top.
  • Return to oven; bake 40-45 minutes or until top is browned and apples are bubbling.
  • Notes: 1) This can also be made in two 8x8 pans. 2) When I bake in glass pans, I use 325 degrees. 3) I sometimes toss in 1/2 cup cranberries or raisins to the apple mixture.

APPLE STREUSEL COBBLER

A tasty little recipe that's made quicker by the use of canned pie filling. I haven't tried it using fresh apples, but I'm guessing you'd just have to make sure you adjust the baking time to fit. I'd love to hear how it works if you do that!

Apple streusel cobbler is a delicious and easy-to-prepare dessert that is perfect for the fall season. It is a classic dessert that has been enjoyed by many generations of families. This dessert is made with sliced apples that are covered with a sweet and buttery topping made of flour, sugar, and butter. The topping is then baked until it is golden brown and crispy. In this article, we will discuss some valuable tips that can help you prepare the best apple streusel cobbler recipe.

Tip 1: Choose the right apples

The type of apple you choose for your apple streusel cobbler is crucial. You want to choose apples that are firm, juicy, and slightly tart. The tartness of the apples will balance out the sweetness of the streusel topping. Some of the best apples to use are Granny Smith, Honeycrisp, and Braeburn. These apples hold their shape well when baked and have a good balance of tartness and sweetness.

Tip 2: Slice the apples evenly

When you are making apple streusel cobbler, it is important to slice the apples evenly to ensure they cook evenly. You can use an apple slicer to make the process easier or slice the apples by hand. If you are slicing the apples by hand, be sure to make slices that are about ¼ inch thick. This will ensure that the apples cook evenly and are not too chunky.

Tip 3: Add spices to the filling

To give your apple streusel cobbler more flavor, you can add spices to the filling. Cinnamon is a popular spice to use with apples, but you can also add nutmeg or allspice. These spices will enhance the natural flavor of the apples and add warmth to the dessert. Be careful not to add too much spice, as it can overpower the apples and streusel topping.

Tip 4: Add cornstarch to the filling

Cornstarch is a common ingredient used to thicken the filling of apple streusel cobbler. It helps to absorb the liquid released from the apples as they bake and prevents the filling from being too runny. You can mix the cornstarch with the sugar and spices before adding it to the apple slices. Be sure to mix the cornstarch into the filling evenly to avoid any clumps.

Tip 5: Use cold butter for the topping

The streusel topping for apple cobbler is made with butter, flour, and sugar. It is important to use cold butter for the topping to create a crumbly texture. The cold butter will melt in the oven and create small pockets of air that give the topping a light and crispy texture. If the butter is too warm, the topping will be dense and heavy.

Tip 6: Mix the topping by hand

When making the streusel topping, it is best to mix the ingredients by hand. Mixing by hand will give you more control over the texture of the topping. Use your fingertips to mix the butter, flour, and sugar until it resembles coarse crumbs. Be sure not to overwork the dough, or it will become tough.

Tip 7: Add nuts to the topping

To add an extra layer of texture to your apple streusel cobbler, you can add chopped nuts to the topping. Pecans or walnuts are a great choice as they pair well with the flavors of the apples and streusel. Be sure to chop the nuts finely so that they blend well with the topping.

Tip 8: Bake the cobbler until golden brown

When baking your apple streusel cobbler, it is important to bake it until it is golden brown and crispy. This will ensure that the streusel topping is cooked through and has a nice crunch. Check the cobbler after 30 minutes of baking and continue checking it every 5-10 minutes until it is fully baked.

Tip 9: Let the cobbler cool before serving

Once your apple streusel cobbler is done baking, let it cool for at least 10-15 minutes before serving. This will give the filling time to set and make it easier to serve. You can serve the cobbler warm or at room temperature. Be sure to top it with a scoop of vanilla ice cream for the perfect finishing touch.

Conclusion

Apple streusel cobbler is a classic dessert that is easy to make and perfect for the fall season. By following these valuable tips, you can ensure that your apple streusel cobbler is delicious and has the perfect balance of flavors and textures. Be sure to choose the right apples, slice them evenly, add spices to the filling, use cold butter for the topping, mix the topping by hand, add nuts to the topping, bake until golden brown, and let it cool before serving. With these tips, your apple streusel cobbler is sure to be a hit with your family and friends.
