Time 6h20m

Number Of Ingredients 13

4 Beef Ribs
1/2 Cup Flour
2 Medium Onions, chopped
4 Cloves garlic, minced
1 Cup or 70 g Carrots, cut to bite size pieces
1 Tablespoon Tomato Puree
2 Bay Leaves
2 Tablespoons Honey
1 Tablespoon Worcestershire Sauce
1 Teaspoon Thyme
1 Teaspoon Paprika
1 Pint Beef Stock
Salt and Pepper to taste

Steps:

  • Wash the ribs. Place in a large mixing bowl and add the flour, salt and pepper. Toss the ribs and make sure they are well coated with the flour. Transfer any remaining flour to a cup and add a few tablespoons of water. Stir to make a paste and set aside.
  • In a large pan, add a drop of olive oil and brown the ribs on all sides then transfer to the slow cooker.
  • Using the same pan, saute the onions and garlic until soft. Use a spatula and stir everything, scraping the bottom and sides of the pan to get all the beef residue off.
  • Add the tomato puree, bay leaves, paprika, honey, Worcestershire sauce, thyme and beef stock.
  • Using the flour paste you made, add that to the broth mixture, stir over a high heat until it starts to boil. Add the carrots. Taste if you wish to add any salt and pepper.
  • Transfer the broth mixture to the slow cooker. Place lid on and cook on LOW for 6 hours.
  • **If cooking this in the oven, transfer everything to a casserole dish and cover. Place in the oven at oven at 300 F or 150 C for approximately 3 hrs.
  • **TIP: 20 minutes before cook time (slow cooker and oven), just have a quick check to make sure the broth is as thick as you would like. if it is too thin, simply mix 1 tablespoon of cornstarch to 1 tablespoon of cold water in a cup and pour that into the broth and stir. this will thicken it when it continues to cook for the remaining cook time.
  • When cooked, serve with some delicious creamy cheesy mashed potatoes and steamed vegetables.

Valuable Tips for Apple Slow Cooked Beef Ribs Recipes

1. Choose the Right Ribs
When making apple slow cooked beef ribs recipes, it is important to choose the right type of ribs. The most popular options are beef short ribs, back ribs, and spare ribs. Beef short ribs are known for their meaty and tender texture, while back ribs are leaner with less fat. Spare ribs are larger and fattier, perfect for slow cooking. Consider your preferences and the type of dish you want to make when selecting your ribs.
2. Sear the Ribs First
Searing the ribs before slow cooking them helps to lock in the flavors and juices, resulting in a more flavorful dish. To sear the ribs, heat up a skillet or grill pan over high heat and add a small amount of oil. Once the pan is hot, add the ribs and cook for about 2-3 minutes on each side until they are browned.
3. Use the Right Seasonings
Seasoning is key when it comes to making apple slow cooked beef ribs recipes. The right balance of herbs and spices can transform a simple dish into a gourmet meal. Common seasonings used for ribs include salt, pepper, garlic, onion powder, paprika, and chili powder. For apple flavored ribs, consider adding a mixture of cinnamon, nutmeg, and allspice.
4. Add Apple Cider Vinegar
Adding apple cider vinegar to your slow cooker can help to tenderize the meat and enhance the flavor of the apples. The acidity in the vinegar helps to break down the connective tissue in the meat, resulting in a more tender and juicy texture. It also pairs well with the sweetness of the apple flavors.
5. Use the Right Cooking Liquid
The cooking liquid you use can have a huge impact on the flavor of your apple slow cooked beef ribs recipes. Beef broth or stock is a common choice for slow cooking beef ribs as it adds a rich and savory flavor. Apple cider or apple juice can be added to the broth for a sweeter and more fruity flavor. You can also add a small amount of soy sauce or Worcestershire sauce for an extra umami taste.
6. Cook on Low Heat for a Longer Time
Slow cooking beef ribs on low heat for a longer time is key to achieving a melt-in-your-mouth texture. The low heat helps to break down the connective tissue and fat, resulting in a tender and juicy texture. The general guideline for slow cooking beef ribs is to cook on low heat for 6-8 hours.
7. Add the Apples Towards the End
Adding the apples towards the end of the cooking time can help to preserve their shape and texture. Soft apples can also break down and turn mushy during the slow cooking process. Consider adding the apples during the last 30-60 minutes of cooking time.
8. Let the Ribs Rest Before Serving
Allowing the ribs to rest for a few minutes before serving can help to redistribute the juices and ensure a more tender and flavorful result. Once the ribs are cooked, remove them from the slow cooker and cover them with foil. Let them rest for about 5-10 minutes before serving.
9. Garnish with Fresh Herbs
Garnishing your apple slow cooked beef ribs recipes with fresh herbs can add a burst of flavor and color. Common herbs used for beef ribs include parsley, cilantro, or rosemary. Sprinkle the herbs over the top of the ribs before serving for a pop of freshness.
10. Serve with a Side Dish
Beef ribs are great served with a side dish to balance out the flavors and textures. Consider pairing your apple slow cooked beef ribs with mashed potatoes, roasted vegetables, or a salad. You can also serve them with a slice of crusty bread to soak up the delicious sauce.

Conclusion

By following these valuable tips, you can achieve a tender and juicy result with a perfect balance of apple and beef flavors.
