cooking spray
2 ½ cups uncooked rolled oats
1 teaspoon ground cinnamon
1 teaspoon ground ginger
½ teaspoon ground allspice
¼ teaspoon ground nutmeg
¼ teaspoon ground cardamom
1 cup chopped toasted pecans, divided
1 teaspoon baking powder
¾ teaspoon kosher salt
5 tablespoons unsalted butter, divided
½ cup brown sugar, divided
2 cups whole milk
1 large egg, lightly beaten
1 tablespoon vanilla extract
2 large Honeycrisp apples, peeled and diced, divided
2 tablespoons maple syrup

Steps:

  • Preheat the oven to 375 degrees F (190 degrees C). Lightly grease an 11x7-inch baking dish with baking spray.
  • Place oats in a large skillet over medium heat; toast, stirring often, until oats are beginning to brown and smell nutty, about 4 minutes. Add cinnamon, ginger, allspice, nutmeg, and cardamom; continue toasting, stirring frequently, for another 1 to 2 minutes. Transfer to a medium mixing bowl and cool slightly.
  • Add 3/4 cup pecans, baking powder, and salt to the oat mixture; stir to combine.
  • Melt 3 tablespoons butter in a large microwave-safe bowl. Whisk in 6 tablespoons brown sugar. Add milk, egg, and vanilla to the bowl, whisking until combined. Stir the oat mixture evenly into the milk mixture. Fold in 1/2 of the apple pieces. Spoon mixture into the prepared pan.
  • Bake in the preheated oven until golden brown and set, 35 to 40 minutes.
  • While the oatmeal bakes, add remaining butter and apple pieces to a nonstick skillet over medium heat. Add remaining brown sugar and maple syrup. Cook, stirring often, until apples soften and the liquid thickens into a syrup, 8 to 10 minutes.
  • Spoon apple mixture over the baked oatmeal after you've removed it from the oven. Sprinkle remaining pecans over the top.

Apple pie is a classic dessert that is perfect for any occasion. Whether it is a family dinner or a holiday gathering, this dessert is sure to please. One way to elevate the classic apple pie is by adding a brown sugar oatmeal topping. The combination of the sweet apple filling and the crunchy topping creates a perfect balance of flavors and textures. In this article, we will share some valuable tips on how to make apple pie with brown sugar oatmeal topping recipes.

Choosing the Right Apples

Choosing the right type of apples is the first step in making a delicious apple pie with a brown sugar oatmeal topping. You want to use apples that are firm and crisp, as they will hold their shape during baking. Some good varieties to consider include Granny Smith, Honeycrisp, Jonathan, and Braeburn. Avoid using apples that are soft or mushy, as they will turn into a mushy filling when baked.

Preparing the Apples

Once you have chosen the right apples, it is time to prepare them for baking. Start by peeling and slicing the apples into even slices. You want the slices to be about 1/4 inch thick, so they cook evenly. You can use a mandolin or a sharp knife to slice the apples. Once sliced, place the apple slices in a bowl and toss them with some lemon juice. The lemon juice will help to prevent the apples from turning brown.

Making the Brown Sugar Oatmeal Topping

The brown sugar oatmeal topping is what elevates this apple pie recipe. To make the topping, start by combining flour, brown sugar, and rolled oats in a large mixing bowl. Add cold butter to the mixture and use your hands to mix everything together until the mixture resembles coarse crumbs. You can also use a pastry blender or a food processor to make the topping.

Assembling the Pie

Once you have prepared the apples and the brown sugar oatmeal topping, it is time to assemble the pie. Start by preheating your oven to 375 degrees Fahrenheit. Roll out a pie crust and place it in a 9-inch pie dish. Fill the pie crust with the sliced apples and spread them out evenly. Sprinkle the brown sugar oatmeal topping over the top of the apples, making sure to cover them completely.

Baking the Pie

Baking the pie is the final step in making this delicious dessert. Place the pie in the preheated oven and bake for 45-50 minutes, or until the topping is golden brown and the apples are tender. You can check the doneness of the apples by inserting a toothpick into the center of the pie. If it comes out clean, the pie is ready.

Serving the Pie

Once the apple pie with brown sugar oatmeal topping is baked and ready to go, let it cool for at least 20 minutes before serving. This will allow the filling to set and make it easier to slice. Serve the pie with a dollop of whipped cream or a scoop of vanilla ice cream.

Conclusion

Apple pie with brown sugar oatmeal topping is a perfect dessert that combines the sweetness of the apples and the crunchiness of the topping. Follow these valuable tips to make a delicious apple pie that everyone will love. Remember to choose the right apples, prepare them properly, make a yummy topping, and bake the pie until it is golden brown. With patience and attention, you can make a perfect apple pie with brown sugar oatmeal topping that your family and guests will enjoy.
