Puff Pastry Apple Pie Turnovers wApple Spice Glaze image

I winged these yesterday morning as a surprise breakfast for my hubby. Boy did his eyes pop when he saw them!! They came out gorgeous and were so easy to make! You could use any pie filling you like, I'm going to make some cherry ones this week!I think they would make nice gifts, too! Enjoy! ~Photos by me~

Categories     Fruit Breakfast

Number Of Ingredients 14

FOR TURNOVERS:
2 - sheets puff pastry, thawed
- flour
1 large can apple pie filling
4 teaspoon(s) cinnamon-sugar mix, divided
1 - extra large egg
1 tablespoon(s) cold water
FOR GLAZE:
2 tablespoon(s) real butter, softened
2 cup(s) powdered sugar
2 teaspoon(s) vanilla
1 teaspoon(s) pumpkin pie spice blend (cinnamon, nutmeg, ginger and allspice)
2 tablespoon(s) milk, cream or apple juice
2 teaspoon(s) milk, cream or apple juice

Steps:

  • Lightly flour board. Open sheets of puff pastry and roll slightly with a rolling pin to make flat again. With a fluted pastry cutter or pizza wheel, cut each in half, then in half again making 4 squares out of each. 8 total. Place squares onto 2 baking sheets lined with parchment paper. Top each with spoonfuls of apple pie filling in the centers. Evenly sprinkle the filling with 2 of the teaspoons of cinnamon-sugar mix.
  • Beat egg with water. brush 2 edges with eggwash, and fold other side over making a triangle. Press edges closed. Use a fork to crimp. Poke fork in tops to vent. Sprinkle tops evenly with the other 2 teaspoons cinnamon-sugar mix.
  • Bake in preheated 400 degree oven for 20 minutes. *I used both of my ovens. If using one oven, you may want to bake them one sheet at a time. Or be sure to rotate the sheets halfway through baking time.
  • For Glaze: In small bowl mix the butter, powdered sugar, vanilla and spice mix til crumbly with a fork. Mix in 2 tablespoon of milk or cream til no longer lumpy, smooth and of a frosting consistency. Add about 2 teaspoons more til you can drizzle it over the warm turnovers.
  • *If too thin, add more powdered sugar. If too thick, add more milk or cream. Spice amount is to taste.

DEEP DISH APPLE PEAR ORANGE SPICE PIE

Deep Dish Apple Pear Orange Spice Pie image

I created this pie for my love of apple and orange spice. I added cranberries, and pears. The orange zest and cranberries give this pie a little tanginess. I am not a lover of very sweet pies. I like to taste my fruit. One pie is never enough at gatherings. I decided to make it in a large baking dish. This will feed a family with leftovers. It is also large enough for a holiday gathering. Why make 2 pies? You can make one huge pie. It is a big hit in my home. Enjoy!

The Spices

The spices used in apple pie spice typically include cinnamon, nutmeg, allspice, and sometimes ginger. Cinnamon is the dominant spice in the blend and contributes to the warm, sweet flavor. Nutmeg has a slightly nutty and spicy flavor and adds depth to the blend. Allspice is often called the "spice of life" because it has a versatile flavor that combines clove, cinnamon, and nutmeg. Ginger adds a slight zest and a warm, comforting flavor to the blend.

Homemade vs. Store-Bought

While apple pie spice can be bought pre-made in most grocery stores, it is easy to make at home. Homemade apple pie spice allows you to adjust the ratios of the spices to your liking and ensures that the blend is fresh. Store-bought apple pie spice can also contain additional fillers and additives, which can affect the flavor and quality of your baked goods.

Making apple pie spice recipes is a great way to create a homemade seasoning that adds flavor and warmth to any dish. This seasoning is perfect for making pies, cakes, cookies, and even savory dishes such as roasted chicken or vegetables. Making apple pie spice is easy, and this article will provide some valuable tips to ensure that you get the perfect blend every time.

Tip 1: Choose High-Quality Spices

When making apple pie spice, it's important to choose high-quality spices. Freshly ground spices will have more flavor and aroma, which will make your seasoning more flavorful. You can either buy whole spices and grind them yourself or buy pre-ground spices. If you choose to buy pre-ground spices, make sure they are not too old. Spices lose their flavor over time, so it's best to buy small amounts and use them quickly.

Tip 2: Use the Right Ratio

The right ratio of spices is crucial to making a great apple pie spice blend. A typical ratio for apple pie spice is:
  • 1 tablespoon ground cinnamon
  • 1 teaspoon ground nutmeg
  • 1/2 teaspoon ground ginger
  • 1/4 teaspoon ground allspice
  • 1/4 teaspoon ground cloves
You can adjust the ratio according to your taste. If you like more cinnamon, add more cinnamon. If you prefer less nutmeg, decrease the amount of nutmeg used.

Tip 3: Grind Your Own Spices

For the best flavor, grind your own spices. Whole spices such as cinnamon, nutmeg, ginger, and allspice can be easily ground using a spice grinder or mortar and pestle. Grinding your own spices ensures that they are fresh and have more flavor. If you don't have a grinder or mortar and pestle, you can use a fine grater. Grating nutmeg, for example, will give you a finer texture than pre-ground nutmeg.

Tip 4: Store Your Apple Pie Spice Properly

To keep your apple pie spice fresh, store it in an airtight container in a cool, dark place. Exposure to light, heat, and air can cause the spices to lose their flavor and aroma. An airtight container will keep the spices fresh for up to six months. Make sure to label the container with the date you made the spice blend.

Tip 5: Experiment with Different Spices

Apple pie spice is a versatile seasoning that can be customized to your liking. You can experiment with different spices to create your own unique blend. For example, you can add cardamom or anise to the spice blend for a more complex flavor. You can also add a pinch of cayenne pepper for a spicy kick. Don't be afraid to try new spices and create your own signature apple pie spice blend.

Tip 6: Use Apple Pie Spice in Savory Dishes

Apple pie spice is not just for sweet dishes. You can use it in savory dishes as well. Adding apple pie spice to roasted chicken or roasted vegetables will give them a warm, flavorful taste. You can also sprinkle it over sweet potato fries for a delicious snack.

Tip 7: Use Fresh Apples

When making apple pie or any dish that calls for apples, it's best to use fresh apples. Fresh apples will have more flavor and a better texture than canned or frozen apples. When choosing apples, look for ones that are firm and free of bruises. Popular apple varieties for pies include Granny Smith, Honeycrisp, and Braeburn.

Tip 8: Use a Variety of Apples

Using a variety of apples in your pie filling will create a more complex flavor. Different apple varieties have different textures and flavors, so it's best to use a mix of apples. For example, combining tart apples such as Granny Smith with sweet apples such as Honeycrisp will create a balance of flavors.

Tip 9: Add Lemon Juice to the Filling

Adding a tablespoon of lemon juice to your apple pie filling will add brightness and balance the sweetness. Lemon juice also helps to prevent the apples from browning. You can also add lemon zest for an extra burst of flavor.

Tip 10: Use a High-Quality Pie Crust

The pie crust is just as important as the filling. Using a high-quality pie crust will make a big difference in the overall taste and texture of the pie. You can make your own pie crust or buy pre-made pie crust from the grocery store. If you're making your own pie crust, make sure to use cold ingredients and handle the dough as little as possible to create a flaky crust.

Conclusion

Apple pie spice is a delicious seasoning that can be used in a variety of sweet and savory dishes. By following these valuable tips, you can create the perfect apple pie spice blend and use it to create amazing dishes. Remember to use high-quality spices, experiment with different blends, and use fresh apples and a high-quality pie crust. With these tips, you'll be on your way to making delicious apple pies and other dishes in no time.
