APPLE PIE CUPS

Apple Pie Cups image

I really enjoy making a homemade apple pie, but it takes some time and I wanted to come up with a version that was a bit less labor intensive. My thought was to deconstruct the traditional apple pie and make something whimsical and less formal than what we're used to eating.

Categories     dessert

Time 45m

Yield 8 servings

Number Of Ingredients 9

6 tablespoons unsalted butter, softened
10 apples, peeled, cored and cut into 1-inch pieces (Jonathan, Honey Crisp, Red Rome or Gala)
1 cup packed brown sugar
1 teaspoon ground cinnamon
1 teaspoon vanilla extract
1/4 teaspoon kosher salt
1 store-bought pie dough
1 large egg, beaten
Vanilla ice cream, for serving

Steps:

  • Preheat the oven to 375 degrees F. Line a baking sheet with a silicone baking mat or parchment paper.
  • Place the butter in a large saute pan over medium heat until fully melted. Add the apples, brown sugar, cinnamon, vanilla and salt and stir occasionally until the apples are fork tender, 10 to 12 minutes. Serve the apple pie filling warm or remove from the heat and allow to cool for about 15 minutes.
  • Meanwhile, roll out the pie dough to about 1/4-inch thick. Using a cookie cutter (preferably an apple shape, but any shape will work), cut out the pastry and place onto the prepared baking sheet. Brush the pastry with the beaten egg.
  • Bake the pastry until golden brown, 10 to 12 minutes. Remove and let cool for 5 minutes.
  • Divide the apple mixture into 8 bowls or glasses, top with a scoop of vanilla ice cream and place 1 pastry apple on top.

Apple pie cups are a delightful twist on a classic dessert dish. These tasty cups are made up of a delicious pastry crust filled with a delectable apple pie filling that is truly a treat to savor. Apple pie cups are a perfect dessert choice for any occasion or celebration, and they make for a great snack too!

Apple Pie Cups Ingredients

Making apple pie cups requires just a few ingredients. These include flour, sugar, salt, butter, cream cheese, eggs, vanilla extract, and of course, apples. Some variations of apple pie cups might include additional ingredients like cinnamon, nutmeg, or even raisins.
Pastry Crust
Making a perfect pastry crust for apple pie cups is an essential element of the recipe. A good pastry crust should be flaky and buttery, yet sturdy enough to hold up to the filling. To make the crust, you'll need flour, sugar, salt, and butter. Cut the butter into small pieces and mix it with the flour, salt, and sugar until it becomes a crumbly mixture. Then add some cold water until the dough comes together.
Apple Filling
The apple filling for apple pie cups is another crucial component. The filling should be sweet, tart, and spiced just right to balance out the pastry crust. The filling is made with fresh apples, sugar, cinnamon, nutmeg, and sometimes other spices or ingredients. The mixture is cooked on low heat until the apples are tender, and the filling is thick and bubbly.

Baking Apple Pie Cups

Once you have your pastry crust and apple filling ready to go, it's time to bake your apple pie cups. Depending on your recipe, you might bake them in a muffin tin or a standard pie dish. The cups should be filled with the apple mixture and then baked in the oven until the crust is golden brown and the apples are tender.

Variations on Apple Pie Cups

There are many different variations on the classic apple pie cups recipe. Some people like to add additional spices to the apple mixture, like ginger or allspice. Others might add raisins or other dried fruits to the filling. Some recipes even call for a crumb topping on the apple cups, adding an extra layer of sweetness and texture.
Savory Apple Pie Cups
For those who prefer something a little less sweet, savory apple pie cups are also an option. These cups often include ingredients like cheddar cheese, bacon, or onion in the filling, giving them a more savory flavor. They are a great option for appetizers or as a snack.
Miniature Apple Pie Cups
Another fun variation on apple pie cups is to make them in miniature form. Mini apple pie cups are perfect for parties or gatherings, where individuals can simply pop one in their mouth and savor the delicious taste. They are also great for portion control, so you don't end up eating an entire pie!

Conclusion

Apple pie cups are a delicious and easy dessert that everyone will love. They are versatile and can be adapted to fit any taste preference, making them an ideal choice for any occasion. So next time you're in the mood for a sweet treat, try making some apple pie cups - you won't be disappointed!
Are you looking to make a delicious and easy-to-prepare dessert that will wow your guests? Look no further than apple pie cups! These mini pies are the perfect individual desserts and are portable, making them great for potlucks and other gatherings. In this article, we'll share some valuable tips for making apple pie cups that will ensure they turn out perfectly every time.

Tip 1: Choose the Right Apples

The first step in making great apple pie cups is choosing the right apples. You want apples that are firm and tart, such as Granny Smith or Honeycrisp. These apples will hold up during baking and won't turn to mush. Avoid using soft or overly sweet apples, such as Red Delicious or Golden Delicious, as they will become mushy and won't hold their shape during baking.

Tip 2: Get the Right Equipment

To make apple pie cups, you'll need a muffin tin and a rolling pin. You may also want to have a pastry brush and a sharp knife on hand. Ensure that your muffin tin is non-stick or lined with parchment paper to prevent the apple pie cups from sticking.

Tip 3: Make Your Own Dough

While you can use store-bought dough for your apple pie cups, making your own dough is a great way to control the texture and flavor of your dessert. Plus, it's easy to make! To make your own dough, combine flour, salt, sugar, butter, and cold water in a food processor. Pulse until the mixture forms a dough, then transfer to a floured surface and knead until smooth.

Tip 4: Chill Your Dough

After making your dough, it's important to chill it before rolling it out. This will help prevent the dough from becoming too warm and sticky, making it easier to work with. Wrap your dough in plastic wrap and chill in the refrigerator for at least 30 minutes before rolling it out.

Tip 5: Don't Skimp on the Spices

Apple pie cups are all about the warm and cozy flavors of fall, so don't be afraid to go heavy on the spices. Cinnamon, nutmeg, allspice, and ginger are all great choices. Be sure to taste the filling as you go and adjust the spices as needed to achieve the perfect balance of flavors.

Tip 6: Precook the Apples

To ensure that your apple pie cups have a perfectly cooked filling, precook the apples before baking them in the oven. This will help the filling to cook evenly and prevent any raw spots in the apples. To precook the apples, simply toss them in a pan with butter, sugar, and spices until they are tender and slightly caramelized.

Tip 7: Make a Streusel Topping

While a traditional pie crust topping is delicious, a streusel topping can add an extra layer of texture and flavor to your apple pie cups. To make a streusel topping, combine flour, sugar, butter, and spices in a bowl and mix until crumbly. Sprinkle the streusel topping over your apple pie cups before baking for a crunchy and delicious finish.

Tip 8: Use Egg Wash for a Golden Brown Crust

To achieve a beautifully golden and shiny crust on your apple pie cups, use an egg wash before baking. An egg wash is simply beaten egg yolk or whole egg combined with a little bit of water or milk. Brush the egg wash over the top of your pie crust before baking to give it that extra shine.

Tip 9: Let Them Cool

As tempting as it may be to dive right into your freshly baked apple pie cups, it's important to let them cool before serving. This will help the filling to set up and prevent any burning your tongue! Let your apple pie cups cool for at least 10-15 minutes before serving.

Conclusion

With these valuable tips in mind, you're well on your way to making delicious and unforgettable apple pie cups. Remember to choose the right apples, make your own dough, use plenty of spices, precook your apples, and let your dessert cool before serving. Whether you're hosting a party or simply looking to indulge in a sweet treat, apple pie cups are a tasty and satisfying choice!
