Time 1h55m

Yield 4 servings

Number Of Ingredients 10

4 apples such as Pippin, Mutsu or Braeburn, plus 1 more if needed
1 tablespoon lemon juice
3 tablespoons dark brown sugar
2 tablespoons granulated sugar
1 tablespoon all-purpose flour
1/2 teaspoon cinnamon
1/4 teaspoon freshly grated nutmeg
1/4 teaspoon salt
1 store-bought refrigerator pie crust (half of a 14.1-ounce box)
1 egg, beaten

Steps:

  • Preheat the oven to 375 degrees F.
  • Cut the top 1/2 inch from the 4 apples. Using a melon baller or spoon, dig out the insides of the apples and reserve, leaving 1/4 inch flesh next to the skin. Remove the cores and seeds and discard.
  • Coarsely chop the scooped fruit and add it to a medium bowl; you should have at least 1 1/2 cups. If not, peel, core and dice the additional apple and add it to the bowl. Sprinkle the lemon juice over top and toss to coat. Add the brown sugar, granulated sugar, flour, cinnamon, nutmeg and salt to the bowl and mix. Divide the filling among the hollowed-out apples.
  • Roll out the pie crust and using a pastry wheel, cut it into 1/4-inch-thick strips. Brush a light coating of egg wash along the top edge of each apple. Weave the strips into a lattice atop each apple, using the egg wash to adhere (see Cook's Note). Lightly brush the top of each lattice with the egg wash.
  • Place the apples in an 8-by-8-inch baking dish. Add 1 inch of water to the bottom of the dish. Cover with foil and bake for 20 minutes. Remove the foil and bake until the crusts are golden brown and the filling is bubbling, an additional 25 minutes. Place the apples on a cooling rack to cool to room temperature before serving.

APPLE PIE BAKED APPLES

Apple Pie Baked Apples image

Everything you love about apple pie - the gooey cinnamon filling, the warm apples, the buttery homemade pie crust - all baked inside an apple. These apple pie baked apples are a fun and festive dessert that everyone will love.

Provided by Sally

Categories     Pie

Time 2h

Number Of Ingredients 10

1/2 recipe homemade pie crust*
1 teaspoon cornstarch
1 Tablespoon (15ml) warm water
5 large, perfectly round and firm apples (I prefer Granny Smith or Honeycrisp)
1 teaspoon ground cinnamon
1/2 cup (100g) granulated sugar
1 teaspoon pure vanilla extract
1 large egg
1 teaspoon milk
optional: homemade salted caramel sauce, for drizzling

Steps:

  • Prepare the pie crust, including allowing it to chill for at least 2 hours. I usually prepare it the night before and leave it in the refrigerator until the next day when it's time to begin the apples. The colder the pie crust, the better.
  • In a very small bowl, mix the cornstarch and warm water together until smooth, creamy, and the cornstarch has dissolved. Set aside. Peel and dice 1 apple. In a medium saucepan over medium heat, cook the apple pieces, cornstarch/water mixture, cinnamon, and sugar. Stir constantly for 5 minutes. Switch to low heat and allow to simmer for 5 minutes. Remove from heat, stir in the vanilla, and allow to cool off for 20 minutes.
  • On a floured work surface, roll out the pie dough. Turn the dough about a quarter turn after every few rolls until you have a circle 10-11 inches in diameter. Cut into fourths, as if you were cutting a pizza. (Pizza cutter works best here!) Then, cut each quarter into 1/4-inch wide strips. I like to chill the strips as I cut out the apples. I suggest putting them on a large cutting board and placing in the fridge. Remember, you always want your pie dough to be COLD.
  • Preheat oven to 375°F (191°C).
  • Slice off the tops of the 4 remaining apples. Using a spoon (or melon baller), dig out the core. It doesn't have to look perfect. Spoon the prepared apple filling into the cored-out apples. You may have some filling leftover - it's great warmed up over vanilla ice cream. Lay 3-4 strips of the pie dough on top of the apple. Then, working with one new strip at a time, alternate weaving it over and under the dough strips already in place. Repeat until the top of the apple has been covered in this lattice style crust. Using a sharp paring knife, trim excess pie crust around the edges. Repeat with remaining apples and pie dough strips.
  • Place apples into an 8-inch or 9-inch square baking pan or pie dish- really any size baking pan works. In a small dish, whisk the egg and milk together. Lightly brush the tops with egg wash. I sprinkled a little bit of cinnamon on top of the egg wash before going into the oven- this is optional. Bake for 25-30 minutes or until the crust is browned and the filling is bubbly.
  • If desired, drizzle each with salted caramel. We ate ours with a knife and fork and vanilla ice cream on the side. These apples are best enjoyed immediately. Store any leftovers in the refrigerator for up to 2 days.

APPLE PIE BAKED IN A BAG

Apple Pie Baked in a Bag image

This is a pie made in Southern, Wis., by a company called the Elegant Farmer. It's owned by Dan and Karen, and she found the recipe in Texas. They've been making them for about 20 years, selling them at their general store and bakery near their farm where they have pick-your-own-apples and pumpkins. They also sell all over the country, including Texas, so the pie has gone full circle. The apples they use in their pies come from Michigan and the crust is not your typical pie dough - it's sort of cookie-like but has lard in it (except the version they make for Whole Foods, which uses vegetable shortening). The brown paper bag helps cook the apples long enough without over baking and over browning the crust, plus they stay juicy. Once the apples are cooked, a circle is cut out of the bag on top to let the crust brown for a few minutes and get crisp. It's then sold right in the grease stained brown paper bag!

Time 2h30m

Yield 1 pie or 8 servings

Number Of Ingredients 14

2 cups all-purpose flour
1/4 cup sugar
Pinch salt
1 cup cold unsalted butter (2 sticks), cut into pieces
1/3 cup ice water
5 Granny Smith apples, peeled, cored, and thickly sliced
1/2 cup sugar
1 1/2 tablespoons cornstarch
1 teaspoon fresh lemon juice
1 teaspoon pure vanilla extract
1/4 teaspoon ground cinnamon
1/8 teaspoon salt
1/8 teaspoon ground nutmeg
1 1/2 tablespoons cold unsalted butter, cut into pieces

Steps:

  • Make the Crust: In a food processor combine the flour, sugar, and salt. Add the butter and pulse until pea-sized pieces appear. Add the water and pulse briefly¿it will still look crumbly. Transfer the crumbs to 2 pieces of parchment paper or foil and form into 2 disks. Wrap the discs with plastic wrap and refrigerate overnight.
  • On a work surface lightly dusted with flour, roll out 1 disk to a circle about 1/8-inch thick. Keep rolling until the circle is at least 2 inches larger than your pan. Line the pie pan with the dough, letting the edge hang over a bit. Roll the second disk, place it on a sheet pan and chill it until you're ready to build your pie.
  • Arrange a rack in the center of the oven and preheat to 375 degrees F.
  • Make the Filling: In a medium bowl, toss the apple slices, sugar, cornstarch, lemon juice, vanilla, cinnamon, salt, and nutmeg together. Transfer to the pie shell and dot with the butter. Brush the overhanging edges of the dough with water. Carefully cover with the rolled-out top crust and pinch the edges together, turning them under all around to make a thick edge. To decorate the rim, press it all around with the back of a fork, or just pinch it to seal. With a scissors, cut a few V-vents in the center.
  • Slide the pie into the brown paper bag and fold the top down. Staple bag shut and place it on a sheet pan. Bake for 1 hour.
  • Remove the pie from the oven and cut a large circle in top of the bag. Return to the oven and bake until the crust is golden brown, about 15 minutes more.
  • Let the pie cool at least 30 minutes before serving. Serve warm or at room temperature.

Apple pie baked in apples is one of the most delicious desserts that you could enjoy. It is perfect for those who love apple pie and want a unique twist on the traditional recipe. But, making apple pie baked in apples is not an easy task. There are some tips that you need to know before you begin. In this article, you will learn about some valuable tips like choosing the right kind of apples, how to prepare the apples, how to make the crust and more.

Choosing the Right Apples

The first and most important tip when making apple pie baked in apples is choosing the right kind of apples. The best apples to use for this recipe are ones that are firm and tart. Some of the best apples for baking are Honeycrisp, Granny Smith, Braeburn, and Jonagold. These apples hold their shape well when baked and won't turn into apple sauce. So, make sure to choose the right apples to ensure that the filling inside the apple is perfect.

Preparing the Apples

Once you have chosen the right apples, it's time to prepare them for the filling. It's essential to remove the core of the apple, so there is enough room for the filling. You can use an apple corer or a paring knife to remove the core. After removing the core, make sure to scoop out some of the apple flesh, leaving enough room to fill the apple with the pie filling. Don't scoop out too much flesh, or the apple will become too thin and won't hold its shape.

Making the Pie Filling

The pie filling is the heart of this recipe, and it's vital to get it right. The filling should be sweet, spicy, and have lots of apple flavor. You can use different recipes for the filling, but a simple recipe would be mixing peeled apple slices with cinnamon, sugar, and a pinch of salt. The filling should be thick enough to hold together but not too thick that it will overcook inside the apple.

Making the Crust

The crust is another essential part of this recipe. You need to make sure that the crust is strong enough to hold the filling and won't break down while baking. You can use a variety of pie crusts for this recipe, but a traditional pie crust works great. You can also try crumble toppings or streusel toppings to add extra texture and flavor to your pie.

Assembling the Apple Pie Baked in Apples

Once you have prepared the filling and the crust, it's time to assemble the pie. Add the filling to each apple, leaving enough space on top for the crust. Make sure to press the filling down firmly to ensure that there are no air pockets inside. Roll out the pie crust, so it's thin and large enough to cover the apple. Use a cookie cutter or a knife to cut out a small circle in the middle of the crust. Place the crust over the apple and press down on the edges to seal the crust to the apple edges. You can also brush the top of the crust with egg wash to help brown the crust and add extra flavor.

Baking the Apple Pie Baked in Apples

The last and final tip is to bake the apple pie baked in apples correctly. Preheat your oven to 350 degrees and place the apples in a baking dish. Make sure to add a little bit of water to the bottom of the pan, so the apples don't dry out while baking. Bake for 35 to 45 minutes, or until the crust is golden brown and the filling is bubbling.
Conclusion
Apple pie baked in apples is a unique and delicious dessert that everyone will enjoy. By following these valuable tips, you can make this dessert at home perfectly. Remember to choose the right apples, prepare them well, make the pie filling thick and flavorful, and bake the pie carefully for the best result. Enjoy your pie!
