Ingredients needed to make apple pecan crumble bars

  • 2 cups all-purpose flour
  • 1 1/2 cups oats
  • 1 cup brown sugar
  • 1 cup unsalted butter, melted
  • 1 teaspoon baking powder
  • 1/2 teaspoon baking soda
  • 1/2 teaspoon salt
  • 2 cups finely chopped apples
  • 1/4 cup granulated sugar
  • 1 tablespoon cornstarch
  • 1/2 teaspoon cinnamon
  • 1/4 teaspoon nutmeg
  • 1/2 cup chopped pecans
  • 1/2 cup caramel sauce

Tips for making the apple pecan crumble bars

1. Choose the right apples
One of the most important things to consider is the type of apples you use for your apple pecan crumble bars. You want to pick firm apples that can hold up well when cooked. Some of the best apples for baking include Granny Smith, Honeycrisp, and Braeburn apples. You can also mix different varieties to add more flavor to your dish.
2. Use old-fashioned oats
When making the crumble topping, it's important to use old-fashioned oats instead of quick oats. Old-fashioned oats are thicker, which gives the crumble topping a better texture. Moreover, they retain their shape even after baking, whereas quick oats tend to become mushy when cooked.
3. Chill the crust before adding the filling
Chilling the crust before adding the filling prevents the crust from becoming soggy. Once the crust has cooled, you can add the apple filling, followed by the crumble. This prevents the layers from blending together while baking.
4. Use cornstarch to thicken the filling
Cornstarch is an excellent ingredient to use when thickening the filling. Add cornstarch to the apple mixture to thicken it up and prevent it from being too runny. The cornstarch will also help the filling set better once the apple pecan crumble bars are baked.
5. Use room temperature butter
When making the crumble topping, use room temperature butter instead of cold butter. Room temperature butter mixes better with the other ingredients, creating a well-textured crumble. On the other hand, cold butter results in a crumble that is too dense and clumpy.
6. Adjust the sweetness according to your taste
The amount of sugar you add to your apple pecan crumble bars is entirely up to you. To make the dessert less sweet, reduce the amount of sugar, or use a sugar substitute. If you prefer a sweeter dessert, increase the amount of sugar proportionally.
7. Don't overmix the crumble topping
When making the crumble topping, avoid over-mixing the ingredients. Over-mixing will make the crumble topping too compact, resulting in a dense crumble. Instead, mix the ingredients with your hands or a pastry cutter until they form small clumps.
8. Add caramel sauce for extra flavor
Adding caramel sauce to your apple pecan crumble bars will give it an excellent taste. After the bars have cooled, drizzle caramel sauce over the crumble topping. You can also add a dollop of whipped cream for an even more decadent dessert.

Conclusion

Apple pecan crumble bars are a delightful dessert that can be enjoyed year-round. The dish is easy to make, and with these valuable tips, you can create a perfect dessert every time. Remember to choose the right apples, use old-fashioned oats, chill the crust before adding the filling, use cornstarch to thicken the filling, use room temperature butter, adjust the sweetness according to your taste, don't over-mix the crumble topping, and add caramel sauce for extra flavor. Enjoy!
