4 apples - peeled, cored and chopped
2 tablespoons butter
2 teaspoons lemon juice
½ cup white sugar
½ teaspoon ground cinnamon
⅛ teaspoon ground nutmeg
1 ½ teaspoons vanilla extract
2 cups prepared mincemeat (such as None Such®)
1 cup chopped walnuts
1 package of refrigerated pastry for double-crust pie (such as Pillsbury®
1 egg yolk
1 tablespoon water

  • Fit a pie crust into a 9-inch pie dish; pour the filling into the crust. With a brush dipped in water, moisten the edge of the bottom crust. In a small bowl, whisk the egg yolk with water, and brush the yolk mixture over the top crust.
  • Bake in the preheated oven for 15 minutes, then reduce oven temperature to 350 degrees F (175 degrees C). Remove the pie from the oven, and cover the crust edges with strips of aluminum foil to prevent over baking. Return the pie to the oven, and bake until the crust is golden brown and the filling is bubbling, 30 to 35 more minutes.

Apple mincemeat pie is a favorite dessert during the holiday season. It is a traditional British dish that combines sweet and savory flavors. Making apple mincemeat pie requires careful preparation and attention to detail. In this article, we will share valuable tips to help you make the perfect apple mincemeat pie.

Tips for Making the Perfect Apple Mincemeat Pie

1. Choose the Right Apples
The type of apples you use will greatly affect the flavor and texture of your pie. Apples that are too soft or too juicy will result in a soggy pie, while apples that are too firm will result in a tough and chewy pie. It is best to use a combination of sweet and tart apples for a well-balanced flavor. Some good options include Granny Smith, Honeycrisp, and Braeburn apples.
2. Use Fresh Mincemeat
Using fresh and high-quality mincemeat is crucial for making a flavorful apple mincemeat pie. You can make your own mincemeat using a combination of fruits, spices, and suet, or you can purchase pre-made mincemeat from your local grocery store. Make sure to check the expiration date on pre-made mincemeat and avoid using any that has gone bad.
3. Precook the Apples
To prevent your pie from becoming too watery, it is best to precook the apples before adding them to the pie crust. This will help to remove excess liquid and ensure that the apples are cooked evenly. You can precook the apples by sautéing them in a pan with butter and sugar for a few minutes until they are slightly tender.
4. Add Spices for Flavor
Spices are an essential component of apple mincemeat pie. They help to add depth and complexity to the flavor profile. Common spices used in apple mincemeat pie include cinnamon, nutmeg, and allspice. You can adjust the amount of spices to your liking, but be careful not to overdo it as too much spice can overpower the other flavors.
5. Use a Quality Pie Crust
A good pie crust is essential for making a delicious apple mincemeat pie. You can make your own pie crust using flour, butter, and water, or you can purchase pre-made pie crusts from your local grocery store. Make sure to choose a high-quality pie crust that is flaky and cooked evenly.
6. Chill the Pie Crust
Chilling the pie crust before baking is an important step that should not be overlooked. This helps to prevent the crust from shrinking and keeps it firm and flaky. You should refrigerate the pie crust for at least 30 minutes before filling it with the apple mincemeat mixture.
7. Use an Egg Wash
Using an egg wash is a great way to give your apple mincemeat pie a glossy finish. To make an egg wash, beat an egg with a tablespoon of water and brush it over the top of the pie crust before baking. This will help to give the crust a golden brown color and add an extra layer of flavor.
8. Preheat the Oven
Preheating the oven is an important step that should not be skipped. This ensures that the oven is at the right temperature before you place the pie inside. Preheat your oven to 375°F before baking your apple mincemeat pie.
9. Check the Pie Frequently
It is important to check your apple mincemeat pie frequently while it is baking. This will help to prevent it from overcooking or burning. You should check the pie after 30 minutes and then every 10-15 minutes thereafter. If the crust is browning too quickly, you can cover it with aluminum foil to prevent it from burning.
10. Let the Pie Cool
Once your apple mincemeat pie is finished baking, it is important to let it cool before serving. This will help to set the filling and prevent it from spilling out. Let the pie cool for at least 30 minutes before slicing and serving.

Conclusion

By following these valuable tips, you can make a delicious and flavorful pie that is sure to impress your friends and family. Choose the right apples, use fresh mincemeat, precook the apples, add spices for flavor, use a quality pie crust, chill the pie crust, use an egg wash, preheat the oven, check the pie frequently, and let the pie cool.
