What is Apple Marshmallow Pie?

Apple Marshmallow Pie is a delicious dessert that combines the sweetness of baked apples and the gooeyness of marshmallows. This dessert is perfect for holidays such as Thanksgiving and Christmas, but can also be enjoyed any time of the year. The pie is made by layering sliced apples on a pastry crust, then topping the apples with mini marshmallows before adding a second crust on top. After baking in the oven, the marshmallows melt and create a sweet, chewy layer that perfectly complements the cooked apples.

The History of Apple Pie

Apple pie is an iconic dessert that has been enjoyed for centuries, with recipes dating back as far as the 14th century. Apple pie is said to have originated in England, where it was originally called "pye". The word "pye" referred to any type of pastry-filled dish, and it was not until later that the word "pie" came to refer specifically to fruit-filled pastries. The first apple pie recipe was published in England in 1381, and the dessert quickly became a favorite among the upper classes. When the colonists came to America in the 17th century, apple trees were one of the first crops they planted. As a result, apple pie became a staple dessert in American homes, especially in New England.

Apple marshmallow pie is a delightful and irresistible dessert that appeals to people of all ages. The combination of sweet, sticky marshmallows, and ultimate apple filling with crispy pie crust offers a heavenly taste that everyone will love. This pie is perfect for holiday dinners, parties, and events that require a touch of sweetness. While the recipe may seem simple, several valuable tips can help you create an outstanding apple marshmallow pie that will leave your taste buds craving for more.

Select Fresh Apples

The type of apples you use in this recipe greatly influences the pie's taste and texture. It's essential to choose fresh and firm apples that have a sweet and tart flavor. Granny Smith, Honeycrisp, Braeburn, and Golden Delicious are among the best apple varieties to use. Avoid using soft or mushy apples as they won't hold their shape and texture during baking.

Pre-cooking Apples

For a firmer and flavorful filling, it's essential to precook the apples before adding them to the pie crust. Sautéing the apples with sugar, cinnamon, and butter brings out their natural sweetness and caramelizes them to perfection. Pre-cooking apples also ensures that they evenly cook throughout the pie, reducing the chances of having undercooked apples in the filling.

Use High-Quality Marshmallows

Marshmallows are a crucial ingredient in the apple marshmallow pie recipe. Using high-quality marshmallows that can melt easily without burning adds to the pie's overall taste and texture. You can use mini marshmallows or cut large marshmallows into small pieces before sprinkling them on top of the pie. Avoid using stale marshmallows as they tend to have a tough texture and won't melt properly.

Add a Hint of Lemon Juice

Adding a dash of lemon juice to the filling enhances its flavor and prevents browning. When apples are cut and exposed to air, they tend to turn brownish, making the pie look unappealing. Lemon juice helps to oxidize the apples, preventing them from turning brown and retaining their natural color.

Decorate the Pie Delicately

Besides adding to the flavor, the presentation of the apple marshmallow pie is just as important. To achieve a beautiful-looking pie, you can decorate it with small apple cutouts or create lattice work over the pie's surface. You can also brush the pie crust with an egg wash and sprinkle some granulated sugar on top to give it a beautiful golden brown finish.

Use a Deep Pie Dish

Using a deep pie dish ensures that you have enough space to add all the filling without worrying about it spilling over. A deep pie dish also provides enough room for the marshmallows to melt and expand without overflowing. A shallow dish may not hold all the ingredients, resulting in a messy and unsatisfying experience.

Avoid Overbaking the Pie

Overbaking the apple marshmallow pie can result in a dry, chewy, and unpleasant dessert. Baking the pie for about 40-45 minutes at 375°F is enough to ensure that it's cooked just right. It's crucial to keep an eye on the pie's crust, ensuring that it doesn't burn, and covering it with foil if it's getting too dark.

Cool the Pie before Serving

It's essential to allow the apple marshmallow pie to cool for a few minutes before cutting and serving. Cooling the pie allows the filling to set and prevents it from spilling over once you start cutting into it. You can serve the pie warm or cold, depending on your preference.

Store Leftovers Properly

If you have any leftover pie, it's important to store it properly to maintain its freshness and taste. You can wrap the pie in plastic wrap and store it in the refrigerator for up to three days or freeze it for up to three months. Ensure that the pie has cooled down to room temperature before storing it to prevent moisture from forming, leading to a soggy pie crust.
Conclusion
Making a perfect apple marshmallow pie requires attention to detail and following the recipe carefully. Selecting fresh apples, pre-cooking the filling, using high-quality marshmallows, and adding a hint of lemon juice are some valuable tips to help you make an outstanding apple marshmallow pie. Decorating the pie delicately, using a deep pie dish, avoiding overbaking, and cooling the pie before serving are also crucial to creating a heavenly dessert. By following these tips, your apple marshmallow pie will be a huge hit at your next gathering, leaving everyone satisfied and craving for more.
